Hello,

I am writing to ask for your Help.

On Oct. 6, 1999 I will be giving and “In-Service” discussion of the weight

loss surgery program at Durham Regional Hospital to the nurses and staff.

I will be providing an update on the program and will be trying to gain

support from the nurses to continue the program.

As all of you know better than I, many people still see obese patients as

lazy and need only push themselves back from the table and exercise a little

more to lose weight. Weight loss surgery remains controversial and since

most patients are only in the hospital for 48 hours the nurses who care for

you rarely get to see the results. This means that unless they see people

and talk to them about the results it will be hard to change their minds.

I am trying to get some of my former patients to come to the discussion to

let our staff get to know you as people and to see the results of the

operation.

Please if you can consider sparing some time on Wednesday morning October

6th for about an hour, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you live near the Research Triangle in North Carolina I would like for

you to consider coming.

Thanks for your help.

Does this mean that if you don't get enough support that you will not continue

to perform the MGB?

Dr. R,

I really wish that I lived closer so that I could help you out! I have lost

only 28 lb. but already I am getting lots of comments on the difference!

People are already really noticing! Not to mention the fact that I am not

sick and appear very healthy and energetic! I am going to be keeping a

picture diary though and I will keep you updated.

Best of luck at your meeting!

You're welcome to use me as a pre-op if you'd like. I'd be happy to show

the nurses that I am a very social, outgoing, upbeat, seemingly

well-adjusted (LOL!), smart, degreeed, EMPLOYED fulltime, loved,

non-abused, non-depressed,

non-medicated, supported by friends and family, and exercising

woman who has tried every diet, who does not sit around eating bonbons and

growing roots on the couch, who just HAPPENS to be morbidly obese.

If that won't do it, who knows? ;)

Dr. Rutledge,

I'm looking in to getting the day off so I can drive down there for the day.

I would love to talk to them and make believers out of all of them! I'd also

love to see the nurses I had while I was there in March...they were

phenominal! Let me know if you need me, I'll see what I can do as far as

time time off. Would love to help!

Hi Dr. Rutledge....wish I could be there too...unfortunately Memphis is a

bit too far...I would be glad to do as and send you a photo diary

to show the progress....and as a fellow nurse I would gladly write some

comments about the mental and physical aspects of being obese and how

unbelievably just from the changes that have been made thus far....(38 lbs

since Aug 2nd..) not only physically but in my mental psyche...which are

invaluable to me....I would gladly express to them in a way that a group of

nurses will understand....maybe I could do a video for you...??

Anyways...I have gone from a size 24 to a size 18...my self esteem has

skyrocketed...and people are TREATing me differently...no longer do that

look at me with disgust or disdain....they see past the fat person

exterior...which is very unfair...but they didn't before...now they

do...guess its called life...Anyways...being a nurse of over 20 years...I

have fought the medical professionals mentallly as you listed above and I

would certainly be glad to help in any way that I could...so count me in for

what you would like for me to do and let me know...I am finally feeling so

much better from my hospitalizations after the MGB...(for those of you who

didn't know...I was hospitalized with pancreatitis and auto-immune hemolytic

anemia...my red blood cells reacted against themselves and I lost

blood...they don't know what it was...think it was to some antibiotics that

I took right after surgery...anyways...blood count is finally up...I have

had to be on large doses of Prednisone(cortisone) and have still lost

weight....which I am so thankful for....I am being tapered off the

Prednisone...and worry that it will stop the progress of my losing

weight...cause I am just now on it for about 5 weeks...so if anyone has any

experience with this...I would appreciate their input...but guess I am

getting off track here...so back to your message...I would love to help and

I can show them that even though the pancreatitis and auto-immune

problem...that I feel great about my surgery...that I am finally getting

whole and healthy and no amount of money in the world or anything for that

matter would ever make me regret or change the decision that I made to have

this surgery and start a new life of freedom from the slavery to

food....that is what is the best thing for me...NO LONGER do I feel like a

slave to food and I no longer have the guilt that I used to...I can make any

choices that I want...no obsessing....I automatically don't want to make

wrong choices...and if I do..then I will pay the price...and after paying

the price several times...I don't like how it makes me feel and so I

automatically don't do it....this is awesome to me....FREEDOM from

food....now I can focus on the other things in my life that I have let go

for far too long...its wonderful...

Anyways....Miss talking to you all...guess I am just getting to the point

that I have felt strong enough to write and get back in our group....

Glad to be back...and let me know what you want me to do DR R?

I'm right here in Chapel Hill and would be willing to take the time to come to

Durham. Please let me know where the meeting will be held. Of course if you

get a lot of responses, I will just go on to work.

Dr.Rutledge,

I would like to come so I can show the nurses that even though I've tried

everything to lose weight, and finally had the MGB, that it is still hard

for some of us to lose weight no matter what we do.

Maybe if they saw someone like me that has gone to great lengths to get

healthy, and is still slow to lose that they might have a better

understanding of obese people. That it really isn't a matter of choice for

us. Our obesity isn't due to laziness, lack of exercise or diet, it's

hereditary and most of us have no controll over it.

Maybe if they understand that I've cut my food intake by 50 to 75%, a lot

of the calories aren't being absorbed due to the intestinal bypass and my

mobility has increased to where I'm starting to exercise 4-5 days a week,

plus I'm making much healthier food choices, not eating sugar or fat, they

might realize that we are prisoners in our own bodies and we don't have a

lot of choices.

If you'd like to use me, please let me know, I can get the time off work

and I'm not that far from the hospital.

Thanks for doing this,

Tina

Dr.R.

You said to " Gain support and continue the program " . Is there talk of you not

performing this surgery there any more? What problem do the nurses or staff

have in caring for your patients? As a nurse, I can understand needing to

train the staff on critical pathways and any special needs obese people have

but, sounds like there is opposition to caring for WLS patients. Have I

misunderstood?

Thanks,

Hi Dr. R. What time is the discussion and where exactly will it be held?

I'll gladly be there if I can work out transportation. I'll be loud and

proud to tell them I've lost 95 pounds in 6 months where before I couldn't

do anything but gain.

Hello,

OK, Thanks to all of you who offered to come to the one hour " In-service "

for the nurses at Durham Regional on Oct. 6, 1999.

The presentation will begin a little before 7 a.m. (!) and should only last

an hour or so.

You shouldn't miss much work.

We will have breakfast at the meeting, just let me know that you are coming

so I can get enough food (;-)

The meeting will be held in the Auditorium at the hospital.

Come into the main lobby and you will be directed down one floor and to the

left to the main hospital auditorium.

Thanks and see you there.

I really appreciate it and I think this will help future patients that are

cared for by these nurses.

Thanks for your help.

Dr. R. I will check my calendar and see if taking some vacation time on 10-6

would on be an option. If I do not have appointments scheduled, you can

count on me. I will be back in touch once I have a chance to check.

I had surgery on 6-17 and have lost 50 pounds. I am thrilled with the

results of my MGB. I realize I am only beginning. I have many more pounds

left to loose. Thanks for this opportunity.

Either Rick or I will be there on Oct 6. Unfortunately, with the kids, we

can't both make it. It'll probably be me because I'm the early bird in the

family. What sort of preparation do you want us to make? Should we bring

before pictures, or will you have them?

Well just to be you and to be willing to talk about the experiences with the

nurses is what I was thinking of.

I am hoping to make obese people and the operation more understandable to

the medical staff.

Thanks so very much.

We will be in Durham regional Hospital Auditorium for an hour around 7-8

a.m. so we could meet there.

We also need to announce the Support group meeting on Sept 25th.

I am sorry I am a little behind.

My email died for a few days and I am trying to catch up.

There is help available. Too often as a large person, we feel alone. What

is important is to realize and know that others feel the same way we do, they

I plan to be at the meeting on 10-6. The only draw back would be if my
