I had major issues with my last pain management doc about him understanding, or in his case not understanding, that the meds he was prescribing me were not lasting the duration, and then I'd suffer from waves of relief followed by pain, followed by relief, and the waves were making me crazy. That particular pain management doc was obsessed with believing that I was only interested in getting high and that it was the high feeling I was looking for that lasted at the start of when I'd take the med. His belief was that the med caused a high, then when the high wore off I'd complain about pain. Wrong! So, to quiet him. I agreed to be put onto Methadone which has no high. Lo and behold, the Methadone worked. It had a few qwerks to it, and gave nightmares, from time to time, but overall, it relieved the pain. It was a miracle drug for my pain. And, the amount of Methadone was pleasing to me, too. I only had to take the one pill in the morning and one at night. It was a success. No more pain waves, and no more purse full of meds that I had to cart around with me. After about 2 years on the Methadone, I started to have some GI distress. This is just something with me and food allergies, but the lack of saliva with the Methadone I believe was the cause. So, I talked my reluctant doctor into putting me back on the Oxycodone, just to prove to him that it was the Methadone causing the GI distress. I tolerated the pain waves again but proved it. I proved that the saliva returned, and the GI distress lifted. But, then he refused to increase my Oxycodone, claiming once again that I was just trying to get high. I went and got myself a medical social worker, who intervened. She sent me to a pain psychologist who interviewed me. The pain psychologist noted that the problem was not with me but the doctor. Again, some feeling of success! And, she changed me to a new doctor. My new pain management doctor is a young kid. New to the block with his back of new drugs and updated tricks. He put me on a relatively new med called Opana ER (extended release), and it works like a dream. On the Opana, I have a full 12 hours of relief, and I only need to take 2 pills/day. There is usually not any breakthrough pain, and I am fully alert. There is no high, and it just works. There are no Methadone nightmares. I feel like a new person on the Opana ER. I hope that your doctor can work with you to get you on some medication that makes sense. Those pain waves are intolerable. Maybe there is a medical social worker out there who can help you, too? I don't know where to find them, but I was complaining at the hospital where my mean pain doctor worked, and someone pointed me to the social workers. Keep me posted.
