Guest guest
Hi Bobbi, I am quite certain you will get a vast view of opinions here, so let me add mine to your collection. I am 13 and 10 yrs post - VBG and a form of RNY respectively. The reason I had the RNY is I only lost about 50 lbs. with the VBG and then gained it all back the following year plus. My doctor 13 years ago was only doing VBG. A few years later he stopped doing all VBGs stating the failure rate was too high. He then started to do the gastric bypass and a homemade radical RNY. Any patient that failed with a VBG and wanted additional surgery was given the RNY. Newcomers - gastric bypass. I have always had a difficult time with the concept behind all WLS. After the surgery the surgeon and nutritionist think you will be able to follow a healthy diet. They design a food plan and expect you to exercise on a regular basis. If that be the case and I was able to do that then why did I or anyone else need the surgery??? I never got it! :-) After having my second surgery I did not diet. I continued to eat what I wanted [while the amount was now radically controlled/reduced] when I wanted. I didn't exercise. I was a badddddddd girl. The bottom line is that I lost all the weight and quite rapidly. I didn't keep a journal or document my progress, but I do know from med files I have that I was in the hospital eight months after the surgery and my attending physician would not let me out until I gained 15 pounds. HA! How's that? Someone telling you, you have to GAIN weight. :-) I lost a minimum of 180 lbs. going from a size 22 to a size 4 in LESS than eight months. I am not an example to follow as I ate what I wanted, when I wanted and didn't exercise. As I have always said, " If I could do all those things then I would have been thin and not needed WLS. " As you will see from many on the list they have any of the WLS and make up their minds that it will be a *tool* for them to turn their life around and they too succeed. Their way is better. I guess the answer to your question is determined by how committed you are and what you are willing [and more importantly ABLE] to do to reach your goal. If you are truly committed it all works. In closing please understand that while I did not follow a diet and did it " my way " [maybe the wrong way] my bloods always checked out. My protein was never low and any other results held pretty close to all the other patients that followed the plan or strayed. I think the most important choice is the surgeon you use. Good luck in you decision. I wish you the best. Barbra Message: 17 Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 13:47:38 EST From: bc1593@... Subject: which surgery? Many of you have already undergone their wls and many of you have already researched and spoke with your surgeons about options and to you I ask this question. With VBG and RNY surgeries available, it would seem that there would be more VBGs being performed but list posting do not seem to hold to that. With the long term issues with malabsorption anybody know why there are more RNYs? Anybody have a surgeon explain their preference? I haven't yet talked to my surgeon about which surgery he would like to perform on me but I would be interested in what different surgeons had to say. Keep me in your prayers. Preop evaluation ongoing. Tentative surgery 4/10/00 Bobbi ********************************************************************************\ **************** The Rules Have Changed...
