Joan,

Is your daughter autistic? I noticed the ABA (but don't know what the DTT

stands for). our son is also autistic and does ABA. 's seizure

(Lennox-Gastaut) really began about a year ago. Before we didn't see any

behavioral problems.

right now is on 10mg of Celexa to help with anxiety and irritablility.

I really think it helps. He seems able to deal with the seizures and life

since the seizures better. The literature says SSRIs (anti-depressants) can

lower the seizure threshold, but our neuro says that it's incrediby rare and

he's never seen it happen. Some of the SSRIs can be more " activating " than

others (such as Prozac), but we've had no problems with Celexa. Ritalin is

often prescribed for autistic kids, but it's almost always a mistake---I

don't know anyone's kids that have responded well to it.

I've never heard of high doses of calcium/magnesium helping though I have

heard high doses of B6 with magnesium. We tried and saw no effect. Plus B6

can cause irritability. If you're interested, I've done some research and

have some web sites that I could give you about biomedical interventions.

Feel free to e-mail me privately.

There was a recent post about behavior that I wanted to respond to. Jen is

recently having more problems though she was better for a while. I have

tried lowering her ratio and adding protein. My husband is a diabetic and

he

says that high ketones make him very irritable.

I have held off on medication and tried other interventions. Jen is in an

" ED " school (stands for emotionally disturbed but most of the kids have

neurological issues that affect their behavior) They use a reward system and

have a behaviorist on staff for individual problems. We also have ABA DTT

at

home for 10 hours a week paid for by our district. That teaches appropriate

behavior in a methodical way and also skills.

We also use supplements and want to try some new ones before drugs. I just

read somewhere that a high dose of calcium/mag can help. We did a trial of

ritilin but had a terrible rebound and she had a big seizure after two weeks

so since then I have avoided drugs. They all can lower the seizure

threshold. I have carnicine but have not tried it yet because Jen got a

nasty cold or flu. I am concerned about the hyperactivity it can cause so

It

may not work for us. That will be next and then sam-e which Jane told us

about.
