Laughter Healthy for Diabetes Patients

Watching a Funny Video for 30 Minutes Per Day May Help High-Risk Type

2 Diabetes Patients Improve Heart Health

By Miranda Hitti

Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

April 17, 2009 -- Laughter could have serious heart benefits for

people with diabetes, a new study shows.

The study comes from Lee Berk, DrPH, MPH, of Loma University and

Stanley Tan, MD, PhD, of Oak Crest Health Research Institute in Loma

, Calif.

They studied 20 high-risk type 2 diabetes patients who also had high

blood pressure (hypertension) and high cholesterol levels

(hyperlipidemia).

All of the patients got routine medical care. In addition, the

researchers asked half of the patients to choose a funny video to

watch for at least 30 minutes a day. " They could watch more if they

wanted to, " Berk tells WebMD via email. He adds that the patients

chose from TV shows and movies, picking whatever they thought would

make them laugh. " We could/should not determine what was 'funny' for

them, " Burk says.

Those patients made up the laughter group; the other patients served

as a comparison group.

During the yearlong study, the patients got blood tests every two months.

After only two months, the patients in the laughter group had a better

HDL ( " good " ) cholesterol level than the patients in the comparison

group. Four months into the study, the laughter group had lower blood

levels of certain inflammatory chemicals.

Laughter is healthy for everybody, not just diabetes patients. I feel

sorry for people who don't have a sense of humor. I have a friend like

that.

So you see, Stan, you have a responsibility to keep us laughing.

That's because you can. Not everyone can think of something funny.

We've come to expect it of you.

Remember that Norman Cousins who wrote a book about him healing himself of

some awful disease by watching old comedies? My husband watches stuff on tv

and I can hear him laughing all over the house. I mean I can hear him all

over the house. But I always wondered about myself because even if I think

something on tv is funny, I rarely laugh out loud.

I have since figured out that the times I laugh are when I'm with a bunch

of women. Especially as we get older, someone does something kind of spacey

and we laugh until we have to run to the bathroom.

Stan does make me chuckle though. Does that count?

I'm the some way, I always thought it was kind of creepy laughing out loud at

something on the TV when you're alone. My sock monkey doesn't like it either.

LOL, Stan. I laugh out loud whenever I feel like it. At my age, I

don't care if someone is around or not. And my sock monkey doesn't mind.

Hi Sue and Stan:

I laughed at your post today. When I was little I had a wonderful sock

monkey that my great-aunt made, and I loved it so much. I was always

carring it around with me.

Stan, I was glad to read that you have sun today!! I bet that makes you

feel good.

You both be good to your sock monkey's, and hold them near.

Hugs, Barbara
