Tokyo Medical and Dental University Graduate School, Department of Orthopedics. Obesity regulates bone metabolism not only by increasing weight loading but by modulating cytokines or hormones which are known to affect bone remodeling. As a result, it has been generally believed that obesity leads to an increase in bone mass. However, recent observations revealed that excessive fat mass may not protect against osteoporotic fractures.
