Guest guest
OK, I watched it too Sara. I didn't tape it though. My VCR won't tape. So stupid. Anyways, this is what I got out of it. Temple said " My nervous system is more like that of an animal. Fear is their main emotion. " That made me a bit sad. I know she talks about sensory overload a lot, but do you think our kids spend so much time in fear? Ugh, I hate to think that. I was very interested in the study on eye-tracking. I found myself concentrating on what *I* was looking at on the TV (autistics follow motion and objects/ NTs follow eyes and gestures). LOL. They did brain scanning as well and showed that autistics see faces the same way that they see objects. NTs see faces differently, the fusiformgyrus part of the brain lights up. It doesn't with autistics. Did anyone catch the Indian boy's last name. Sara, you have it taped. Could you find it for me? I caught the first 6 letters, but they flashed it up there too quickly. I want to do a search for his book of poems. It is Tito Mukopa.....something or other. Also, why do so many of us focus on our kids opening or not opening their presents? It just seems weird that we have all noticed that and one of the moms on the show also mentioned it. Watching that, I realized how nice it would be to have money. One of the families (three kids with autism) had a palatial home and they donated 2.5 million to research. Another family paid out $3700 for a new auditory processing therapy. Also, Dr. Folstein (genetic research in autism) made mention of how parents quite often have " autistic tendencies. " Her name in a search engine brought up tons of hits. Check out http://www.nationalgeographic.com for more info on the show. It was called " Science Times. Guest guest
You know this is where Alec just doesnt seem to fit the mold at all! He is always laid back. He doesnt seem to care about the world around him being different and such. Alec takes everything in stride. Greggory used to have such anxiety over things but now he hardly ever does. So it must change over time or at least has the chance of changing. I dont think my boys fit this description, it must be very hard for those children who do. Guest guest
's the same way. Some things used to send her into hysterics but she's calmed down a lot with age. The autistic behaviors really peaked for her at about 4. She used to be terrified of the vacuum cleaner and airplanes flying overhead. She's very laid back now. So long as her routine is fairly stable, she's a very happy child. Tina > Greggory used to have such anxiety over things but now he hardly ever does. But the rest of the world.........>> This is what I think, too. Kids with sensory challenges can't make sense of the world...and we fear what we don't understand. I think that fear often rules their world, that taking away the fear is the most important thing we can do for our kids...honest. It showed a wide range of people on the spectrum. Temple Grandin was on it. At the end they were talking about genetic research & finding the genes that cause autism. Temple said we can't just get rid of these genes; in small doses they result in gifted individuals, and only in large doses (and often only with compounding environmental factors - my add in) do they cause handicap. " If we got rid of these genes we'd have a bunch of socialites who would yakkety-yak all day long and not get anything done. Guest guest
For those of you who already seen the show. Would it be a good show to show to someone who doesn't know much about autism? My BF is trying very hard to understand it and to understand why Mark does some of the things he does, but it's still hard for him. He is amazingly patient with Mark, sometimes more patient than me. For example when we were in Wal-mart this last weekend. Mark was throwing his normal fits and didn't know how to react. I told him what I do is ignore Mark's tantrum, give him about 10 or 15 minutes and he'll get over it and when people give you dirty looks give them the look right back. He gave me a funny look but did what I said, and whala 10 minutes later Mark was fine. ha ha But the looks we got from people in the store were hilarious. Well I was in a goofy mood and wasn't going to let anyone bring me down. ;o) Tina W.

Guest guest
Sorry, didn't answer the original question. Yes, the show would be good to show someone that has doesn't know a lot about autism. I wouldn't say that it was really at a beginner level, but having your boyfriend see the other autistic kids on the program can be very educational. It's easy to forget sometimes that we're not the only parents in the world dealing with the problem. Especially when we're the only ones at Walmart or Mcs when a major tempertantrum hits.
