Guest guest
Roe I've had a significant increase in lower back pain the last month, enough that I can almost not get up. I do have an HNP at L5-S1 that's been there for 15 years. I had back pain prior to Lyme but never this severe. Larry NV
Guest guest
hi roe, three things; lie on the floor flat, slowly raise one leg bending knee as it comes up. wrap your arms around the knee and pull gently towards your chest. hold 10 seconds. BREATH! lower to floor, straight slowly. do the same with the other leg. BREATH! then bring both up together. hold 10 seconds! BREATH! do not sit on soft chairs, sleep on the floor. take 600 mg. ibuprofen every 4 hours. kay
Guest guest
I have lower back pain and it turns out to be a staph infection which entered through my port. I was bedridden for 2 months before they put me on a different IV for this problem. Now, 8 months later, the pain is still there, and it turns out I've still got the infection in my back, but it moved from the bone to the disc. So, now I'm going back on IV for staph. Not everything is Lyme disease - although it's probably all caused by Lyme disease. So, GO TO THE ER!!! Lovette
Guest guest
I went through the same thing, after my second discussion with my Rhemy he sent me in for an MRI of the back/spine. In addition to finding an old back fracture (that was never treated), I also had a tumor in the lower spine. After many more tests and a second opinion in a fast few weeks, I had the tumor taken out. It was not malignant which was great news, but a tumor wrapped around the spinal cord is not a good thing malignant or not. The surgery was scary, but at least it was caught before any real damage had occurred. Now I have to have a follow up MRI every year to make sure it does not come back. Bottom line is don't let anyone pass off your pain or just give you more pain drugs. Check things out and push for addition tests and opinions. Bob in VA. Guest guest
To treat your lower back pain, you may want to ask your doctor to prescribe some physical therapy...you may still need the meds, but the PT can help with some of the pain, and they will teach you exercises that you can do on your own that will help long-term...I think the lower back part of PA is called sacro-illiutus (sp?), and they can look for it on an MRI... Guest guest
Another thought on the back pain...when I first went to Physical Therapy my back was so bad I could barely move...one of the things they did for me was called TINS (can't remember what is stands for)...it involved something that looked like a pen, placed onto specific places on my legs and lower back...then some kind of electric shock happened, the muscle would tense, then relax, and would end up more relaxed than before; it felt better then. They would also put me in a traction machine to gently pull my vertebrae apart to relieve pressure. They also taught me " self-traction " that you can do with just a table or kitchen counter, but it hurts my wrists so I can't do it. But my aquatic physical therapists taught me how to do traction in the water...I put 10lb weights on each ankle, wear an aqua jogging belt and just hang in the deep end...it really helps my lower back. Sounds strange, but for me, I don't care if it makes me feel better! [Ed. Note: Just don't let go of the side of the pool, ! Putting 10 lb weights on your ankles sounds an awful lot like the old gangster movies where the Mafia would put " 10 pound overshoes " on the victim (ie; they would put his feet in boxes of concrete, wait until the concrete dried, and them dump the poor guy in the nearest body of water!). Guest guest
Enbrel has helped my foot, ankle, shoulder and fingers but it has done nothing for my lower back pain. My back pain is caused by OA and disc problems with lots of muscles spasms thrown in for good measure. The only relief I get is from the massage therapist and or the Chiropractor and sometimes from accupuncture. My back hurts almost all the time whenever I do just about anything(walking, standing, sweeping the floor). In fact after I started on Enbel I felt a lot better and started doing a bit more housework than I was used to and my back flared up really bad, so much so that I was blaming it on the start of taking Enbrel. Guest guest
I have PA and Spondylo\ listhesis it is extremely painful and I was first diagnosed with an Xray but it showed up in much more detail with an MRI. Treatment is fusion but I am really against cutting as the last two operations I had made my P go right to those areas and my body made new " P-spots " not to mention now that PA is all over I have to think that if I was cut there L4-5 then what would keep the P and PA from " attacking that area " hope you can get some relief. Guest guest
I have had severe low back pain for quite a while. My rheumy sent me for x-rays about 5 years ago and they show a compression fracture. Last year I had more x-rays and they showed severe arthritis , bone spurs and pressure on the spinal cord. I then had an MRI and that showed the arthritis and every disc is bulging. I was on Skelaxon for about a year and a half and it really helped. In the last 8 months I had both knee replaced and after my second surgery in October my back flared up really bad. My doctor changed me to Zanaflex , it helps but makes me very unsteady on my feet, so I can't take it if I have to leave the house. In December I went for a nerve block in my back but that only worked for 3 days. Guest guest
About 1 year ago, I began developing increasing lower back pain. It got to the point, where I had difficulty sleeping. My rheumy prescribed physical therapy (PT). After three weeks of PT I was MUCH improved. The PT went on for a while after that, and there was additional improvement. Also, I put pillows under my knees, the higher the better. That reduces the stress on your lower back. Good luck Fred > Does anyone have severe lower back pain, maybe with spasms? Note: I would suggest that you be more assertive with your doctor. Don't let him/her get off so easily with just a shrug. If something is bothering you, and they try to shrug it off or ignore your complaints, say something like: " Hold on a minute there doc, I want to know whether there is anything you can recommend that will help my severe lower back pain (or whatever happens to be ailing you) or not? How say you? " At least that's what I would do. The response may be " No, I can't help you " but at least then you'll know it's time to start looking for another doctor. Medical doctors are supposed to help, not just listen. If you wanted someone to do nothing more than listen, you could have gone to a psychologist! ;-) Ron]

Guest guest
I get that too! I think it might be die off and for some reason the toxins like to gather there. I'm not really sure. Guest guest
Hi : I have the same kind of back pain. The worst came from prolonged sitting and bending over it became unbearable. None of the pain medications worked. An MRI was ordered and showed two herniated disks, and some degeneration of the lower spine. My orthopedic physician referred me to the pain clinic of one of our major hospitals. After their evaluation I had and epidural injection of steroids twice with no relief, then two separate appointments with injections into the facet joints in 6 separate spaces each time. This was used more as a diagnostic tool since I received temporary relief. They then made the decision to do a radio frequency ablation (nerve root burning). I had to go on two separate occasions because they could only do one side at a time. It temporarily became worse but after about 4 weeks, I had very good relief. That was in September, 2004 and I am still doing well. It is not total relief but totally tolerable. I also had to go through physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around my lumbar spine and still do exercises every day. I am hoping this will last. If you have any further questions about these procedures, let me know. I have some very good sites that explain them well. Barb

Eastern Standard Time, nggator@... writes: Does anyone have similar problems in their back or is it more structural? Hi , the lower back involvement is called spondylitis, and many of us have trouble with that area. I had a fair amount of trouble there before I ever had PA, and it has gotten much worse with the PA. There are 2 things that work well for me, one being exercise...I learned a lot in physical therapy and have continued those exercises through pilates classes...this helps strengthen the abdominal muscles that help support the lower back. Lifting weights can be a challenge to the lower back if not done properly, you may want to have a trainer or physical therapist help assess whether your weight lifting is helping or hurting the area. The second thing I have found helpful is a chair called a balance ball chair...its essentially one of those resistance exercise balls that sits in a cradle with wheels. I got it at gaiam.com, and it was $80. What makes it helpful is that your spine has to constantly adjust for you to stay balanced comfortably, and this brings fluid to the vertebrae, which prevents stiffness and alleviates some of the pain. Best of luck,

Guest guest
Hi , I have problems at the base of my spine. If I am trying to do anything that requires bending the spine. the pain just builds as time goes on. I also have a feeling that if I were to move the wrong way, I would cause real problems with it. I mentioned it to the specials Rheumatologist nurse this morning and he suggested I try Physiotherapy for that and my hands/wrists to try and strengthen the muscles again. You are already doing that by the sound of it. Could you be doing too much exercise? Who knows. Hope things improve for you.
Guest guest
First of all. go see a doctor and get diagnosed. You've been dealing with this for 6 months! Then after a diagnoses, based on radiology tests, you will know what you are dealing with, and which direction to go with it. crysieblu <crysieblu@...> wrote: Ok, so this past December i fell while i was snowboarding and landed on my lower back and the top of by butt.
