Guest guest
Amy, I'm glad the dr visit went so well. I'm sorry things have been so hard. I remember when Mikey was climbing everything in sight & swimming in the fish tanks & attacking me, and how completely overwhelming that was. I hope the meds help quickly and without adverse effects. You are in my thoughts & prayers. -Sara.

Guest guest
i would have been in the hallway too amy! are you able to get kep to actually take meds? this is a huge problem for us - we can't get rowan to take anything. he has a ritalin prescription but it's useless. a ritalin patch might be nice! a prozac prescription is also in his future to help control his compulsions. if you have any hints on drug administering i'd love to hear them! what is the zinc and cod liver oil for - thisis something i've not heard before? best wishes amy - i hope the break you need and deserve is on its way! michelle Kep's dr. appt. We took Kep to the doctor today for several reasons. First, we were concerned about his weight gain and other small problems that may have indicated a metabolic problem. Amazingly enough, they were able to draw blood from Kep right in the office. Cam held him down. Wimp that I am, I left the room. It was hard enough listening to him from the hallway. Cam will check on the blood tests tomorrow when he goes to work. Second, we have been very concerned about recent behaviors. For those of you that don't know, Kep's behaviors have become unbearable over the last two weeks. He has become incredibly compulsive and anxious. So, we are beginning the long hard road of medications. Kep's doctor recommended that we start with a low dose of ritalin. We should know in a day or two if that is going to have any negative side effects. If he manages the ritalin OK, we will then add prozac. The prozac is to deal with his OCD issues, the ritalin with his overactivity. He gave the doc a good dose of that today, jumping repeatedly off the table. At one point he landed on a half open drawer and ripped open the back of his leg. Ugh. The doc also wants us to continue giving Kep zinc and cod liver oil and he really wants us to try the gfcf diet again. I really don't have the energy for THAT right now, but maybe after xmas I will look into it again. For those of you that are unclear, gfcf means gluten and casein free. Pretty much he would have to give up all dairy and grains. It is a NO-FUN diet! So, that is it for now. I will keep everyone up to date with the meds. We really need to see some improvement soon. Things have been very, very hard lately. Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts. Oh, and we have talked about all of this with Bethany. She is old enough now that she needs to be aware of what we are doing. She had some good questions, but seems comfortable with things right now. Guest guest
((Amy)). Sigh. I hope the medications work for Kep, and that you get a good response on the first meds you try. I'm really sorry you are dealing with this. It's not a fun way to live. who is one of many moms here managing alot of not so nice behaviors. Guest guest
Amy, Sounds like a good dr who is supportive of a holistic as well as a medical approach. I am familar with the prozac/stimulant type combo. It really does work well for some kids. Unfortunately, it was another intervention that didnt work for . He really was never compulsive (a bit obsessive at times). He had various reactions to the stimulants. We took him off all. We are starting over. The GF/CF is hard, we are doing the casein part, for other medical problems. I would like to start the omega 3 again. Thea > We took Kep to the doctor today for several reasons. I refuse to ever watch them do it again. > > are you able to get kep to actually take meds? Ha ha. We wasted three of the ritalin pills this morning trying to get it into him. They are the capsules that you can break open and sprinkle on to pudding or whatever. He figured that out right quick and fought everything else. The prozac is actually in a liquid so that should be a little easier, especially because he only gets 1/2 tsp at a time. I wish I had some better hints, but honestly, force is about the only thing that works with Kep. > > what is the zinc and cod liver oil for - thisis something i've not heard before? A lot of our kids have zinc deficiencies. Zinc is directly tied to appetite and is a major part of therapy for anorexics now. Kep started trying new foods when he started taking it. You can get it at a health food store. This is tasteless and liquid, so I just put it in Kep's juice. The cod liver oil is one of those things to help the gut, I think? Or the brain? Oh, I don't really remember. Anyways, for lots of info on this type of stuff, check out " Biological Treatments for Autism and Pdd " by Shaw. It is an excellent book for anyone looking into vitamins, yeast treatment, diet, etc. > > best wishes amy - i hope the break you need and deserve is on its way! Me too . Thanks! Guest guest
Amy, have you asked your dr about asking the pharmacy to make the ritalin pills intoma creme that you can rub into Kep's skin? My dr says they can make almost anything into a creme. Of course if it is time released that may not work. Guest guest
Glad to hear Bethany is handling this well. I know she already has enough anxiety without having more.
