Guest guest
Can you tell me how can you avoid getting another episode of MS after pregnancy? If I remain on Gluten free, dairy free diet during and after pregnancy, will it help? My doctor told me that I need to take steroids after pregnancy to calm my immune system, should I do that? Please advice.
Guest guest
Hi Ruby, A number of people in this group have had bad experiences with steroids. I think you would be better off following the advice here: http://tinyurl.com/advice-to-msers All the best, Dudley Delany http://profiles.yahoo.com/dudley_delany
Guest guest
I went to this link but couldnt find any information on what should a woman do after pregnancy to avoid another attack. It would be helpful if I could get some suggestion. Thanks
Guest guest
Don't take the steroids. The risks are just too great. Prednisone and related steroids can increase your risk PPD and PPP. Plus, one of the side effects of predisone is something called prednisone induced psychosis. It also messes up your adrenal glands, and possibly your thyroid gland as well. I blame intermittent prednisone (taken for very severe asthma as a teen/young adult) for many of my health problems today. It possibly contributed to my early development of MS, as well. (I was 15 when I had my first symptoms) I am one of the women whose MS worsened after delivering a baby. 6 months after my fourth child was born I lost my vision, balance, ability to speak without stuttering, and a good bit of muscle tone. This happened in the space of a few hours. My dx was changed from RRMS to SPMS. I used a combination of diet, supplements exercise, meditation, and short term LDN to stop progression, and reverse my symptoms. If I were to have another child I would go on LDN as soon as the baby was born, remove all gluten, sugar and food chemicals from my diet (this is the diet I follow now). Also, if I may suggest it.. breastfeed your child for as long as you possibly can. Breastfeeding gives immune protection to both mother and baby. As far as we know, MS is not genetic, however, a tendancy toward autoimmune disorders in general seems to be genetic. Breastfeeding may help protect your child in the future. Good luck! And enjoy your pregnancy and new baby! Guest guest
Hi Ruby, I think the best thing to say here is that there are no guarantees. I'm familiar with the statistics of women having MS attacks after a pregnancy. Are you ok right now? I mean, asymptomatic or managing symptoms well? If so, I would say continue doing what you are doing. And don't fall off the wagon just because you feel so good due to the pregnancy alone. If it were me, I think I would plan to continue my current regimen of BBD, acupuncture, herbs, etc. assuming all is ok for fetus and, afterwards, for a nursing baby. It's quite possible that the once-abysmal-but-now-improving breastfeeding rates in the US contribute to the rates of/frequency of MS attacks after pregnancy. It's all about hormones, right? Breastfeeding is what we are meant to do, so it should help keep the hormones balanced properly. Honestly, I am in a place where I truly believe that I'm not going to have another major MS attack. If I were having another child, I have to believe that would hold true because of the efforts I'm making. HTH!
