Guest guest
KD, I can't say much, except your not alone... I too have problems driving anywhere longer then 1/2 an hour.... If I know I must drive, I start off taking (2) Tylenol arthritis pills, this sometimes helps enough to get through about 1 Hour. If this doesn't help (as it sometimes doesn't, then I turn to taking hydromorphone (pain killer). My job requires me to drive two hours away from home every other week, and I'd hurt terribly that day and the day after... Luckily I work for the state, so my doctor has given me a note stating that I'm under his care, and until further notice I'm incapable of driving anymore then the 1/2 hour. Now I have my bi-weekly meeting over the phone (which they should be anyway, Its ridiculous that anyone should drive a total of four hours for a hour meeting). I'll be curious to see if anyone has these problems... My hands just can't grip anything that long and my ankles kill me after sitting still for too long as well... I hope your able to figure out your vacation plans.... Would your significant other be willing to pick up some slack? I have always been the driver in the family, especially in traffic. Now my husband drives just about everywhere... Just a thought... Best wishes and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Guest guest
I have driven many long trips and I will tell you what helps me is frequent stops at the rest areas to rest for about 15 to 30 mins at a time that way your not 'constantly driving " . [ ] Pain while traveling?!?! Hi, Guys! I feel bad that I'm so new to all of this that I have to ask a ton of questions, but I don't have anything to contribute back to y'all yet. Let me start by saying that this Thanksgiving I am definitely going to add all of you to the list of things I am thankful for! You have all helped me so much since finding this list! Thanks!!! This is the third trip I've gone on since being diagnosed. I had been feeling really good before we left. I had minimal pain and very little fatigue. It seemed that the Mtx was working! But ... just a couple hours into the trip (by car, I am the primary driver) my hands started hurting. The pain is quite bad now. It has moved from my fingers, into my hands, and up to my wrists and elbows. Do any of you have this type of problem where travel causes so much pain? What do you do to get through it??? I really want to be able to enjoy Thanksgiving!!! Thanks again to all of you!! KD
Guest guest
When I drive for long periods I need to wear wrist/thumb braces. I wear them like an hour, then off for a while...then on again. I use a lumbar pillow fior extra support. I flex my ankle frequently to try to avoid spasms in my feet. I take frequent breaks. I had to get rid of my standard transmission which I loved. With effort we can adapt.... Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving... Guest guest
Hi KD - Please don't feel bad for asking a ton of questions. We've all been there/done that. Sometimes just asking questions can be a HUGE contribution to someone who may have been afraid to ask. As far as traveling, I don't drive much anymore. The pain is to the point where I just take a pain pill before we go and hope for a smooth ride. There have been times where the bumps have caused so much pain that I've almost been in tears and almost to the point of asking hubby to take me to the hospital. And that was only with an hours drive from here to our son's home. I am dreading Thanksgiving because here we are two days before and I still haven't made my pies - I'm going to have to do premade crusts this year for the first time in years. We are frying turkeys, so I have to prepare the liquid for injecting, I have two salads to make and I have to take three 15lb turkeys, and 3 turkey breasts out of the refrigerator and put them in a cold water bath because they are still frozen and we have to do the injecting and rubs tonight. My lower back is killing me to the point where I can barely walk. I am so grateful for so many things, but I am so saddened by this pain. How is everyone else handling the holiday? I'll have help tomorrow when daughter is out of school, but no help for the stuff I have to do today...................Doreen > > Hi, Guys! Guest guest
KD and group; You're very welcome KD. We want to help and compare notes on our lives with arthritis and other painful diseases. So you help too. I don't go anywhere so I don't know how to help. You can do Like I do. Let someone else drive. I know its not always easy to get another driver. I stop a lot. My nephew said we are addicted to rest areas haaaaaa. We seem to stop at them all. It works for us. I hope you have a nice Thanksgiving. Don't worry about asking questions, we all do it. God bless and take care. gentle hugs Clora ******************************************************* From: KD Pearce <stablegal@...> Subject: [ ] Pain while traveling?!?! Guest guest
**LOL** Yeah Sue - it certainly seems that way. Hubby volunteered to fry turkeys at his mother's house this year. He is one of six siblings, 19 nieces and nephews and of course their significant others/spouses and children. Its crazy - there are so many of them anymore and there were 4 new babies born between August and November - one per month. Its a zoo, but we all seem to have a good time and everyone gets along for the most part. I just hope I can hold up physically this year. So far, I'm not doing so good. I broke down and purchased pies from the bakery instead of making them like I do every other year. That was a hard one to let go. I love cooking, but I just can't do it anymore. I feel like I am spiraling out of control. But, I am just going to have to take one day at a time and rest when I can..........Doreen > > Doreen, are you feeding an army or what?
