it's a personal record thing. Good luck.

[ ] Employment Question

Have a question for anyone who is currently job hunting.

Do you disclose to a potential employer that you have RA?

I am being laid-off from my current job as of 5:00pm today. I have already

begun putting out feelers and will dive head-on into the job search next

week.I'm trying to stick within a office setting as I am now, however, I know I

may have to take whatever comes along. So again I ask, Do I disclose my RA or

not?

I work as an employment specialist in an Independent Living Center here in

Oregon where I work with seniors and people with disabilities. I say it is a

very personal thing whether or not you disclose your disability to your boss.

If you can do the essential duties of your position with no special

accomodations, then there is no reason to say anything. I tell my clients it

depends on a lot of things.......................there is always room for

discrimination if they know, whether or not you can prove it..But if you can get

long not telling, I say leave it be. that is just my opinion from working in

the employment field for those with disabilities. Obviously my boss knows about

mine as 51% or more of those where I work have a disability. Let me know if

there is anything or information I can give you. I do not know what part of the

country you live in, but you may check to see if the is a Center for Independent

Living where you live as they offer a

variety of services as well as your state's vocational rehabilitation dept.

That is where we get our referrals from for our employment services.

Good luck!

I am a job coach for adults with developmental disabilities, we advise our

individuals not to disclose there disabilities, in fact it is illegal for a

company to even ask if you have a disability according to the americans for

disabilities act.

Hi Betsy,

Disclosing your RA to a potential employer can be a benefit. The job I have

now, which I have had for 4.5 years, was the first job where I disclosed my RA

in the interview. I was unemployed at the time and desperate for a job. I

disclosed for 2 reasons:

1. I was recommended for the job by a friend but I didn't think I was qualified

for it. I figured I didn't have anything to lose.

2. I was scheduled to receive my Remicade the day after the personnel committee

wanted me to start. Since I needed time off, I didn't think it was fair, or

right, to lie.

Telling my employer worked out for me as my co-workers are very " arthritis

friendly. " I share an office with 1 coworker, , as opposed to cubicles like

everyone else. has what is called a " Steph pass. " If he is not really sick

enough to stay home but sick enough to get me sick, he calls in his " Steph

pass. " It has worked out quite well, and it is an office joke.

Take care,

Steph
