Although there's a group of common symptoms linked to MS, the disease is a very

individual thing. I would discourage you from setting yourself up with any

expectations at all. It's quite possible you will halt the progression and even

reverse any damage that's already occurred. We don't recommend any of the drugs

here - Copaxone, Betaseron, etc.

My #1 recommendation for someone who is newly diagnosed would be to get on a

megadose of vitamin D right away, like 6000-8000 IU/day. I currently take

10,000IU/day and will go down to 5000 or 6000 IU in the summer. It's cheap and

easy, and a study last year showed that it can help prevent relapses. Vitamin D

deficiency is also well-documented as a causal factor in MS - the rates of MS go

up in a linear fashion with deistance from the equator.

Some things to check into are the Best Bet Diet, cleansing & detoxification,

acupuncture, herbs, etc. There's a ton of info here in the archives, but you

can always ask for help too. :)

Hi Tim and welcome.

The best thing to do is look through the files on here and then ask any specific

questions of any of us.

There are a lot of people with a lot of knowledge on here.

My personal favourites are the Best Bet Diet (BBD) which eliminates gluten,

lactose, legumes (incl. soya) and a few other things.

Swimming, yoga and low-key lifestyle keep my symptoms from ruling my life.

You were lucky to get to 54 before diagnosis. I made it to 45 but most are much

earlier. When diagnosed it is scary as you feel helpless and don't know what to

expect. It isn't that bad though as it is so slow which gives you time to get

used to it as it changes, if it changes. Everyone is different with MS and you

might be one of those who goes through life not even needing cane (walking

stick). The biggest thing is not to get stressed which seems to affect all of

us.

Tim,

Go to www.copingandprevailing.com

If you cannot afford the book send me your mailing address and I will send to

you. Don't worry, MS is surely a pain but there is a lot that you can do to

help yourself. I'm 67 been managing MS since 1984 quite successfully WITHOUT

drugs.

Regards,

Tom Bayuk
