Guest guest
The doctor is taking me off the Plaquenil and starting on MTX! I will start Sat night. He is starting me on 4 pills. He wants me to take Folic Acid 1mg Mon-Fri. Does anyone want to tell me anything before I take this? Any pointers or things to watch out for? I have heard a lot of bad stuff about this drug. I told my doctor about this and he said remember the people that have problems with it will always tell the bad stuff. I have heard some good stuff but I'm worried about it. I hate feeling sick to my stomach. He also said I could have diarrhea from it. That will not be a good thing for me. I heard about the hair loss. How bad is it really? Will it be that noticeable? Ok I think everyone has gotten my thoughts about this so I will end it now. Lol. Cheli

Guest guest
I'm on injections too and I do it myself. So if you get too much nausea just ask your Dr to switch you over. It is simple. I also take the folic acid, and my hair was always fine. I think I may have been on it for 20 years now. I still work full time Annette I am on MTX injections, plaquenil and prednisone. I also take folic acid everyday. I started on the pills of MTX but they made me very nauseated so now I just give myself a shot once a week. Its not bad my RA is much better and the worst side effect I have had is the fatigue the day or two after taking it. I have had some hair loss but its more like thinning out than loosing hair. I hope all goes well and you have a great response to the MTX feel free to ask me any questions! Vicky
Guest guest
Hi Cheli:     I give myself a MTX injection 1X a week. The pills made me so sick to my stomach that my Rheumy had me switch to the inject. form. I have been taking the MTX injections for 6 years successfully. My hair is baby fine and thin all my life. Have not lost any hair from these meds. All my meds. for RA do agree with me, thankfully.     Just let your body tell you what is working or not. This is the best guide for you. We are all diff. and what works for one, may not work well for you. Or vice versa.     Good luck with your MTX. We are all here for you.     Wishing you many pain free days ahead.  Hugs,  Barbara From: hlhsinfo@... <hlhsinfo@...> Subject: [ ] Starting MTX " RA-support " < > Date: Friday, January 8, 2010, 8:59 PM  The doctor is taking me off the Plaquenil and starting on MTX! Guest guest
How bad is the nausea? I have a family to take care of and not sure how I'm going to take care of them and feel sick to my stomach. How bad is it when you say fatigue? Will I just want to sleep all day? I get very sick (nausea) when I take an adult multi vitamin. When I do take them I have to take a child's flintstone. This is why I worry about feeling sick being on this MTX. Guest guest
When I was on methotrexate, I didn't get any nausea, stomach upset, hair loss, or any of those side effects. I got an entirely side effect, lowering of my white blood cell count. All of us are different and react in different ways to medications. Just start the mtx with the expectation of having no adverse side effects. Maybe you'll be lucky. If the side effects that you in particular get are too severe, you can always be switched to something else. Good luck! Take care of yourself.  Hugs,  Barbara From: stanpfister@... <stanpfister@...> Subject: Re: [ ] Starting MTX Date: Saturday, January 9, 2010, 1:46 PM  Hi... Try eating something before you take it. I took the oral later in the evening, as my doctor suggested, to sleep off side effects. For me, the injections are much better, less side effects and it seems to more effective. Fatigue is different for everyone, I found staying on a strict routine seems to help. I hate MTX but I cannot deny that it works. Stan Seattle, Cloudy.    Re: [ ] Starting MTX How bad is the nausea? Guest guest
Well, we can't see you if you don't speak up. LOL. How are you doing with your RA? Did you move, and if so, to where? Guest guest
MTX was a tremendous help for me. I was on Plaquenil, Predinsone and an NSAID and then started MTX tablets once a week and folic acid each day. I was then able to stop the Prednisone and later stop the Plaquenil. That has been over 15 years ago. I don't remember any major side effects. I just remember how much it helped the pain and enabled me to do some things I had been having problems with. Wishing the best for you as you try it . Think positive and be sure to get your labs done as scheduled.

Guest guest
Hi Mousie:    I am so glad you are doing better, and feeling better. Such good news the meds. are agreeing with you. I so hope this continues for a long time so you can begin to have a better life. I feel such joy for you. Thinning hair is such a small price to pay for feeling good. Wishing you many, many pain free days ahead.  Hugs,  Barbara From: Micaela A Gomez <pcortas1@...> Subject: [ ] Starting MTX Date: Monday, January 11, 2010, 1:01 PM  Cheli, I have been on MTX 6 pills a week and 1000mg Folic Acid for over 3 months and I really don't have any big side effects. What I do have is slight thinning hair loss something I could live with. The first time I took the meds the following day my stomach was upset maybe like a flu bug again something I could live with to avoid the RA pain. I have been lucky and will continue to take these meds to live a possible normal life  Mousie in Calif
