Guest guest
My decision regarding this is to keep on hand med such as valium for the anxiety attacks. The doctors don't have a clue that they are largely responsible for our depression, along with the FMS. They truly have no clue how much stress they cause us. I dream of throwing my neurologist off the bridge. LOL Cheri

Guest guest
CeeCee - I am new to the group but definitely not new to the dx. My recommendation would be to take the pill. It won't help with the pain but it certainly might help you be better able to COPE - which seems to be all we can do. I find it also helps some with the fatigue. Anything that helps with ANY of the symptoms is really worth its weight in gold. Thanks for letting me voice my opinion. Frances A question My doctor wants me to take an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety med because she believes that I get depressed then I have pain. I get depressed because I am in a lot of pain and none of the NSAIDS she has prescribe hasn't worked more than a week. I have refused to take them so I tell her not to write me prescriptions for those type of medications. Myquestion is.....should I follow her advice and take the pill, take the pill until I find other ways to relieve my depression or not take the pill at all? Guest guest
That is so true Frances. The key with both Fibro and CFS is that we need to learn to cope as best we can. Guest guest
Hi CeeCee I have found that I can cope alot easier with the illness when I am on an anti depressant. The Fibro is difficult enough without trying to cope with depression. Studies have shown that depression goes long with the fibro which makes sense as our lives completely change and our lives are filled with pain and faitgue. That is just my opinion. The Fibro is difficult enough without . . . >sense as our lives completely change and our lives are filled with pain and faitgue. That is just my opinion. Felt I needed to affirm your opinion. Upon years of being sent to pschiatrist/psychologists (20+ yrs), the last psychiatrist I was sent to (1996) called my family physician while I was in her office and berated him for not agressively treating the symptoms and pain. She told him my diagnosis was depression secondary to chronic pain. She further told him that failure to treat my pain/symptoms is what was causing my depression and that he should get on the ball!!! She also told him that, considering the lack of care from the medical profession, she was impressed with my ability to cope. I was actually ecstatic when I left her office for the last time. Warm fuzzies to all! Jeanne PS Need referrals for your " earn-cash " programs? Guest guest
Hi CeeCee, I am new to this group, but was finally Dx'd last year after 10 yrs of pain. I am taking Effexor 75mg in the morning. I honestly never considered myself a depressed person, but the doc said people with FMS have off seretonin levels and the anti-depressent will regulate it, hopefully reducing symptoms. I cannot say that it has reduced pain any, but I now realize I stress internally, because if I skip my med for 2 days, I start internalizing everything, and getting anxious, especially at work. It never occured to me that the reason I was feeling less stress and anxiousness could be related to the med. Is this making any sense? Anyway, I guess I am trying to say that even though I thought it was not doing anything, I realized after skipping some doses, it really is helping, if anything the anxiety reduction is a blessing. Take care and good luck in whatever you decide. Guest guest
I'm new to the group, so I hope not to step on any toes, but I don't think it was suggested that anti-depressants be used as the main means to cope. I know I was against them, especially with the stigma that goes with them, but I reached a point with this DD that I was willing to try anything. Anyway, I have been taking them for a year now, and though I cannot say they themselves directly help with the pain, I have found they help me not feel so anxious. In fact, it honestly didn't occure to me that my feelings of reduced anxiety and higher feelings of self esteem could be related to these meds until I tried to go off them (convinced they were not doing anything anyway). It wasn't until the 3rd day I noticed those feelings of anxiety creeping up on me (especially at work-I work in an Operating room-was I passing the instruments fast enough, why was I all of a sudden second guessing myself). anyway, I went back on them, and sure enough those anxious feelings retreated, and Lord knows anxiety and stress is not something we need with this DD. Sorry, don't mean to write a book, but I was so surprised to make this revelation so recently, that I felt compelled to write all of this. thanks for listening. It is nice to find others who understand.
