I can not take biologics.

We have tried sulfasalazine, plaquenal, prednisone etc....

all caused major problems.

I treat symptoms when able.

I do not recommend this to others but my DR's and I decided

better to suffer from RA, perhaps ending up completely disabled than die of

liver disease or internal bleeding.

Hi all,

For those of you that are not able to take biologics. Where does the

Rheumy go from there? What do you take then?

Thanks,

Which biologics have you tried, , and what side effects did

you have?

I do consider myself lucky that Enbrel works so well for me and so far

has not caused any adverse side effects. It's too bad that the

biologics cost so darn much. Since my co-pay more than doubled, for

about six months now, I have been stretching out my injections, from

two per week to one. I seem to be doing well on one injection per

week. I am not in remission, though, because last time it was time for

an injection, I could tell again that I do have RA.

I have never taken a biologic.

My Mom had hepatitis during WW2.

Myself and my siblings all have hep A and B.

It is under good control.

The fear is altering the immune system will allow the hepatitis to run rampant .

I have had horrid reactions to celebrex, prednisone and all the others.

They are awesome in the beginning but if there is a side effect I get it.

Last winter I was diagnosed with celebrex/prednisone induced diabetes.

My blood sugar was 1100 ....I was bleeding internally  and faced death.

I stopped all meds and my blood sugars returned to normal range.

I now take gambentin which helps resolve nerve pain.

I can not take aspirin, tylenol or anything over the counter.

I am functioning quite well. When I get a flare I sleep - sometimes for days.

Then the energy pops back....... and I rejoice with what I can do.

Hi :

Wow.  I knew you had allergies to meds., but not like that.  You are

so lucky to be alive!  I never saw sugar that high.  It is a miracle you

survived that too.  You just never know when some medicines make our bodies go

crazy.  We all need to be careful when taking new ones.

I hope this will be a good year for you, and you sell your condo. so you

can move into your new home.  The RE market is picking up here, so that's

good.  I don't think you will have any trouble selling yours.  People always

are on the look out for water front property.

    Take care and talk soon.

Hugs,

Barbara

, I'm glad that you're functioning well in spite of the fact

that you can't take any medications. I hope that your RA continues to

be under control. I'm glad that your blood sugars have returned to

normal range; prednisone can certainly raise them. Keep keeping on.

  • 3 weeks later...

I thought that I was the only one " freak " in the group. The worst reaction that

I had was to the Remicade where they could not get a hold of the infection and I

went on to lose my right knee above the knee.

At this time, the rheumy doesn't want to do anything and I too will occasionally

self treat the symptoms and that has already produced several deep ulcers and a

very difficult anemia to treat. My worry is that I have already lost 2 joints

and my hips need to go next.

No snow in FL, but the temperature is slowly crawling up the thermometer, but it

makes it like sleeping in a basement.

Enjoy the cuddle weather!

Gentle, tender, angel hugs.....................................

Hi Debs:  Nice to see you posting today.  How have you been feeling?  Good I

hope, and no E.R. trips or hospital stay.

Yes, the weather is great here too.  Happy to see the cold weather leave.

Lots of damage to our palm trees and plants.  Every yard has suffered this.  I

hope they come back, but I am doubtful of that.

What have you been up to lately?  I hope you are pain free and no more

infections.  It is surely your turn for some better health.

Have a good night and talk soon.

Hugs,

Barbara

Hey! I lived in St. sburg for 12 years. Also, Pinellas Park.

I went to Transfiguration Private School and then Gibbs High. What a

small world.

Oh... I miss Florida terribly. I absolutely loved it there. I had to move back

to Michigan due to family issues and this is where my family resides except for

my dad.

I would love to move back to Florida, but I don't think it is going to happen.

It's been almost 18 years since I've lived there. And since then have gotten

married to a wonderful man that is rooted here.

I absolutely hate the winters here in Michigan. Every year I dread the winter

coming and try to relish every minute of summer that I can.

I've only been diagnosed in 2008. I noticed symptoms in 2004. So I don't know

if it would be easier there in Florida for me or not. I do know that the

weather so far here doesn't effect me at all.

I hear Florida has been getting some pretty cold spells. Does your RA give you

more trouble than usual when it is that cold?
