Thanks, that's good to know. There are times when blood supplies become critial

and I always tried to do my part on those occassions, not that I'm a saint or

anything, I just didn't want people to think I was looking to sell it or

something. On the other hand, maybe I could dose up really good on MTX and sell

that blood to people with RA!

This isn't all we have to become a problem. It's also hard to donate parts

and pieces after death, as I've been told. I intend to be a donor but my

body may only be good as a cadaver waiting to be chopped into pieces for

surgeons to practice on.

I have Fuchs' corneal dystrophy and may need partial corneal

transplants one day. Your corneas might still be good when you die.

And doctors do need some to practice on. The newest procedures involve

just using part of the cornea, and cornea specialists do need some to

practice on before they do it on a live person.

So, Dennis, even if your parts aren't good enough to transplant, you

would still be doing live people some good. Hooray for you!

The pretty much take any body when you pass away for medical science.  My uncle,

who passed in July, had directives for his body to be donated for medical

science purposes.  He was an alcoholic, had horribly high blood pressure and

cholesterol, and bladder cancer.  Whether you donate your body to medical

science or donating a certain body part to give to another, it is still the same

purpose.

I know I have yet to reconcile the idea of donation.  I hope to overcome this

because it is a good and important cause.

Hello Everyone

I tried to donate my body for research (I'm in the UK) and on the form it said

that they didn't want bodies with 'some types of arthritis' - so I presumed they

wouldn't want me

(I have RA and OA) and stuck with my original plan of donating as many organs as

possible.

It hadn't crossed my mind that there might be a problem with that due to all the

medications that I take though. I'd better look into it further as I would like

as much as possible to be used in some way!

Hugs to all,

Elaine

I thought this might come up during the course of this topic. It's my decision

to donate whatever is left of me 'cause it may help in some small way. It'll be

their decision on what to do.

I pondered that, I guess it would depend on the cancer, being that RA is

currently only treatable and the outcome can vary.

I know here in Ontario we are not allowed to donate blood if you have RA. The

red cross will not use your blood and I know because I was the national bone

marrow registry for years and then got a call one day that I was a potential

match for someone needing a transplant. I informed them that I had since been

diagnosed and she said they have to take me right off the list that I was not

able to donate any more. This was a real bummer as I always gave blood and felt

good about it. The nurse even joked and said I am sure someone with cancer would

trade to have RA but it is just not allowed and apparently the transplant would

not work with all the drugs we take.

I think I will let the medical school here in my home town use me after for

research purposes!

Tammy

Rather than aiming to be perfect, just aim to be little bit better today than

you were yesterday.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer about six months after I was

diagnosed with RA. I must say that RA prepared me well to deal with

the breast cancer.

Not choices anyone should have to make. A lot of people have asked me how I deal

with RA, they've " heard " it's bad. We deal with it the same as anyone would,

because we have to, it's not like there was a choice. That being said, still, I

admire your courage.
