Guest guest
Many people don't react to Methotrexate at all. And I didn't lose any hair from it. dd <In a message dated 6/14/2009 5:56:09 P.M. Guest guest
Hi Beth, I've taken 3 mtx tabs a week for 10 years with NO problems other than thinning hair on top. You won't know how it affects you until you try it. in PA [ ] mtx - dosage & side ffects?? ok- my rhuemy is wanting me to take mtx- 3 tabs a week- very small dosage i guess- but i've been following the side ffects on the list and read them in the literature- i cannot afford to be sick for days at a time from the meds- and i'd really rather not lose my hair jsut yet if i dont ahve to i am on prednisone- 5 meg one day 10 mg the enxt - it seems to help a lot- i take a pepcid everyday to counteract the stomach trouble from taking the pred- and im on sulfisalizine 2 tabs am & pm - thats it- i ahve a flare at least every month, but i wonder if that would subside with better balance of activity and rest- anyway i see the dr on fri & just wondered what people's experiences were with the smaller dose- thnx! beth
Guest guest
I started out on that dosage, and while it wasn't enough for me, it may help you. People react differently to the drug, so it may not be as bad for you. I take it before I go to sleep so I sleep through the worst of it. Also, are you taking folic acid as well? If you take that, it helps to lessen some of the side effects, and your hair won't fall out. You could always inject the MTX to bypass the stomach issues. I do that and it does help out a lot. Injections sound like they are much more of a big deal than they are, plus the medication is cheaper in that form. Guest guest
Mtx was the 2nd med they gave me. Whew. Talk about sick and tired. I kept getting more weak and sick. Fever, breathing problems, cramps, vomiting, etc. 6 weeks of torture until I keeled over. ER. My white was way down and my red was barely registering. Something about the Mtx was not clearing my body weekly like it was supposed to. My immune system was so beat down- pneumonia, pleursy, anemia. I don't know what else. 10 days that I really do not remember. Mtx stay away from me! The Enbrel and Immuran are helping me a lot. Just my story. I do know the Mtx has helped so many people. I guess it is kind of try until you find the right combination that works for you. Remember that you are the boss of you and that Dr.'s are not Gods. Do not just take a med because they tell you to and then they poo-poo your problems and side effects. If I would have had a lick of sense, I'd have pushed the now fired Rheumy about how I was feeling long before I was hospitalized! -- D. in hot, sunny south Louisiana > > ok- my rhuemy is wanting me to take mtx- 3 tabs a week- very small dosage i guess- but i've been following the side ffects on the list and read them in the literature- i cannot afford to be sick for days at a time from the meds- and i'd really rather not lose my hair jsut yet if i dont ahve to > i am on prednisone- 5 meg one day 10 mg the enxt - it seems to help a lot- i take a pepcid everyday to counteract the stomach trouble from taking the pred- and im on sulfisalizine 2 tabs am & pm - thats it- > i ahve a flare at least every month, but i wonder if that would subside with better balance of activity and rest- > anyway i see the dr on fri & just wondered what people's experiences were with the smaller dose- > thnx! > beth >
Guest guest
Beth, Try not to worry. Keep in mind that it is likely that people with more problems than average join and stay in a group like this. When a person posts, it will more often be about difficulties than success. For RA, methotrexate is still the gold standard treatment.
