I am kinda new to this site and read more posts than I write, but I wondered if anyone had been on Arava by mouth and Orencia infusions? If so, how long did it take to work? This is my second month on Arava and I have had my 4th Orencia infusion with no improvement. I realize it could take up to 6 months. It is just that this is about the fifth biologic combo I have been on with no relief from anything so far but prednisone, which I have been on almost continually for two years now. Also, the pain med helps, but it is just a bandaid. I just want to be one of you all that says I feel sooo much better that I can get back to living, back to work, back to myself. I am just soooo afraid as the time continues to tick on that is not going to happen if it hasn't yet? I hope someone has some positive input. Thanks in advance for your help in this matter. Guest guest
Ann and , Biologics do not take that long if they are going to work, they take at the most 04 weeks and that is in case of Orencia and Rituximab. In your case please look at the diagnosis again, sometimes that is the case. Regards,Dr. OP Garg, VSM Blog . Facebook . Twitter Senior Consultant Rheumatologist BLK Hospital, Pusa Rd. Guest guest
When I was new to RA, nothing helped until Enbrel was approved by the FDA. Within two weeks I knew I felt better. Eight years later, after a bad infection, I had to go off Enbrel and was given Arava. Arava took several months to reach its peak, but helps me just as much as Enbrel did. The only other thing I take is Plaquinil (sp). Thanks to these two drugs, I got my life back! Guest guest
I have also been on many of the RA meds. I never combined Arava and Orencia so I can not speak to that combination, I have been on both though. Orencia never really kicked in and I was quickly getting worsening symptoms so was switched to Remicade and MTX. I have chosen to stop the MTX as it makes me so sick, even in injectable form, so I am on Remicade. I am not totally pain free but I am able to function almost completely normally. I work as nurse manager and work 50-60 hour weeks. I do have to say at the end of the day I am physically dead to the world. I take ibuprofen once in a while if I get achey. Arava made me deathly ill, had to hang over the commode for about 10 hours. Didn't want to live like that and immuran did the same. So Remicade. I wish you good luck. A rather difficult journey to find something that works for each of us. I am waiting for something like stem cell research to come up with a way to reset the immune system. At least I am hopeful Dale Ellen
Guest guest
I have been on that exact mix until December and my rheumy agreed to end the Orencia then. I'd been trying Orencia for 3.5 years while trying different oral additives. It helped me between months 4-10 then the " helpfulness " of it began petering out. I've been in one very long flare ever since. Right now I'm still taking the Arava and he added Voltram? diclofenac? some prescription NSAID. That's not really helping either though. My rheumy wants to wait until March to start a different biologic. Am kinda glad I can't take prednisone. I seem to have a mild allergy to it. Can't take any stronger pain relief because I have a CDL (commercial drivers license) and I've got a tolerance for everything that is legal to have in my system. When I work (drive a big truck) I just " bitch and bear it " . My rheumy has roughly 60 patients that are on Orencia and the infusion room gals told me that the majority of them are being helped a great deal by Orencia and that I'm one of the few that it seems to not work on. Guest guest
My mom is on Sulfasalazine (pills) and Orencia (infusion) and is doing well. Meloxicam (anti-inflamatory) has helped her to cut back on her pain meds. The first pills she tried were MTX (she was a zombie) and Arava (gastric side effects were terrible). FYI, she is 85 years old. She took prednisone for years which may have contributed to her having diabetes (no one in her family has it but her). Her doctor was chomping at the bit to get her off that. Sue [ ] Arava/Orencia Hi everyone!
