Guest guest
Knocked on wood for you......I've been off prednisone two years. I didn't realize that it took that long to get it out of your system. I learn something new every day from this board. Our bodies produce cortisol from the adrenal glands. It's our natural response to stress. Good explanation, thanks Zena! Leanne uip 1/03 IllinoisZena wrote: What I know about steroids is this. Your body produces a natural steroid, which is increased when necessary, but sometimes a steroid 'boost' is helpful to sort out different problems. The natural steroid damps down some reactions and helps with a feeling of general well being. Now, our bodies are intrinsically lazy, so if you put steroids in your body doesn't bother to make it's own. If you've been on steroids long term then you have to gently remind your body to make some more. I believe that your body naturally produces the equivalent of about 7mg of pred daily. If you come down too quickly, then your body doesn't have the steroid it needs and doesn't have the ability to make that much. In this country we are encouraged to carry our steroid alert card for about 2 years after coming off of them completely if you've been on them for a while. This is how long it takes for your body to get back to normal steroid production. I've been on pred for many years as each time we tried to reduce the dose something cropped up and I had to go back up again. Touch wood I manage it this time.
