Wow Dennis that's great! At this point, it's just the waiting game. I hope

the guy is in a good mood once all the information is collected! LOL. My

letter did state I might have to go and see their Dr. I suppose that is

standard.

I'm just in the waiting game stage at this point. I don't wait very well.

:(

Thanks!

Heidi in very cold arctic freezing chilly icicles too! mass.

Stan,

This was a mistake, I hit send before I was ready. When posting here, I

always erase my email signature. My fingers just went wild on me and I didn't

get a chance and somehow I clicked twice, please disregard this.

I re-posted, but haven't seen it post yet. I did it the right way!!!!

Thanks,

[ ] Questions regarding Disability

Hi Group,

I'd like to hear your stories about filing for disability. I'm 45, and from

Mass. I've heard so many strange things and I have no idea what to believe

anymore. I heard the closer you are to 50 the better your chances. I've

heard Mass has been approving more cases lately on the first go round. I

don't

know anyone who's applied to help validate that. Anyway....So far, I know

that

paperwork has already been sent out to all my Drs. and Hospitals, etc. Some

of my Drs. have already returned it! My therapist is in total support of

this as is my primary care and my Physiatrist. My PCPs Nurse called me today

and told me the 4 questions they were being asked and that she was sending

in

one year of records/notes/one year of records/notes/<WBR>test results. She had

nothing really to worry about because all of his (the Dr.) notes state how

miserable you are feeling re: RA , etc. and your stomache, etc....and then

she

said, that Disability usually holds things up and comes back requesting

another

year, so she's going to send 2007 as well. She knows I wasn't feeling any

better then either. I was also sent paperwork to complete. I finished that

yesterday and sent it back. My questions are...have any of you been approved

on the first try? If yes, how long did it take? I'm trying to focus on the

positive and not the negative. I'm kind of at a downspot right now so

hopefully I'll get some good news out of this. I know they typically deny

people

the first time, but it can't be everyone. How long do appeals take? If you

get

denied the first time, do you then get a lawyer? I had someone handwrite my

forms for me as my hands were all swollen and painful yesterday, she is my

contact person as well. We both signed the forms. I will appreciate any

information you provide. Thanks in advance for your time.

Heidi in frozen, snow storm coming tomorrow Mass.

Thanks !!! I'm starting to feel better about things. I have had a few

conversations with him and have been polite to him,but it was easy because

he has a sense of humor about things so that's good as well.

I am convinced that it all depends on 1) Notes from your physician and 2) the

analyst/investigator who gets your case. I applied in May of ... 2003? and was

approved in September of 2003. Never had to go for an outside exam or

anything......

What you say is absolutely true! I was polite and courteous and had no problem

being approved, people were very helpful. But the other side of the story is my

brother in law, who happens to be a complete jackass, filed for disability

nearly three years ago. So of course I asked for his advice, his first and

immediate response was, " they're gonna & ^$! over! " I remember immediately

thinking that with that attitude I am sure they are not going to be pleased.

Consequently, when I learned the specifics of his case it came out later that

they er... " lost " his file. It was lost for sixteen months. Now, I don't know

that they really lost it or not, but knowing him as I do, I wasn't at all

surprised.

Stan,

Oh, he was finally approved.

I applied in February '07 and was approved in May '07. Had I been

feeling better at the time, and got the paperwork in timely, I believe

it would have been even faster.

I agree that your doctor's statements have a lot to do with backing up

your claim. But that's only half, You need to show that you can't work

anymore because of how your illness is affecting your ADL (activities

of daily living).

A couple of other things. SSDI disability is determined by your

state. Some States farm it out. California's is done in Salt Lake

City, UT. Yes, I do believe your " person " Your Disability evaluator

does have an impact as well. So be nice to that person. Get their

phone number, if you are going to be late with some paperwork, call and

let them know. Say " Thank You " , often, and be understand if they seem

to be in a bad mood. They get headaches and mean clients too. I would

remind workers and clients alike to be polite to each other. It made a

world of difference. " Positive attitudes produce Positive Results. "

My mother-in-law was like that... They lost her file, too. I am pretty sure they

only approved her to get rid of her.

Re: [ ] Re: Questions regarding Disability

Hi Heidi - hopefully you'll have better results in MA than I've been

having in FL. I applied in March, 2006, was denied twice, contacted a

SSD attorney who filed for a hearing date in August 2007. At that time

they were doing expedited hearings - not any more - it was also only

supposed to take 12-18 months to get a hearing date - now its 18-24

months. At this rate, I'll be either dead or ready for retirement by

the time they get their acts together. I'm 47 and have heard that

until you hit the " magical age " of 50, they consider you " retrainable "

- like an old dog or something.

Sorry I don't have more positive news for you, Heidi. Florida SSD time

lines suck - and the economy doesn't help matters any as I've also

heard they are not replacing SSD workers if someone leaves, so the

backlog continues to grow. Best of luck to you.....Doreen :)

Oh, Heidi,

Most of my workers had a wicked sense of humor. It helpped to difuse a

great many tense encounters. Remember I worked in the Welfare office,

not in disability determination, so our clients tended to be a bit on

edge for many different reasons.
