I was hospitlized I had them so severe.  My entire tongue, mouth and throat

were covered.  I couldnt even swallow my own spit  T

They gave my acyclovir IV, lidocaine rinses, and dillaudid for pain.  I also

had 105 degree temp.  I ended up in the hospital for 5 days, fever was there

for a week.

It was horrible.

Subject: [ ] Mouth Sore Help

Hello - I suffer on and off from mouth sores from the MTX. I at times double up

on the folic acid when I have a mouth sore but I am curious if anyone else out

there has found something that really works to prevent them? I use all the over

the counter stuff (canker sore medicines and use actual table salt on them) but

I am wondering if maybe someone has found something that has helped them prevent

them? Also, what do you do to treat yours? Thank you kindly,

Kristy

When I started to have problems with my mouth, I asked on this board and was

told pretty quickly that I needed to up my Folic Acid. I had to increase the

MTX to 1.2cc and was not told to increase the folic acid, I was still at 1mg

per day. I increased it to 5mg and the problem went away. Now if I start to

have any problems with my mouth, I go up from 2mg per day to 5mg and back

down when it clears. Maybe that can help you.

My Dr said today if I get a sore/sores that he will be upping my Folic Acid.

Folic Acid prevents the side effects of MTX and mouth sores. I told him I get

sick from the folic acid and he laughed at me. He said it is just a vitamin.

It's like eating bread. I just take mine at night. Lol.

hey kristy,

how many sores? are they big?

i get a few small ones the day after i take my mtx. they always seem to be in

the same spot(s), which is a little weird.

my doc told me to take double the amt of folic acid the before, during and after

i take the mtx. so far, it hasn't seemed to help.

i may have to take a lower dose. maybe that's something to think about?

also, green tea with honey helps soothe my mouth.

I have used Lysine and it seemed to help.   You can get this at Wal Mart and I

took it several times a day,  This and OTC Abrava has helped me.

On the Tish radio show he mention soaking a cotton ball in oil and holding

it on the sore.  Said the oil helped coat the sore to improve healing.  I

haven't tried this.

I had some test done recently and I was deficient in folate acid.  All I had

ever taken was 1 MG a day, so it makes sense that increased folic acid would

help.

I have taken MTX a long time and stopped in Nov to clear up sinus infections and

haven't started back yet.   No big problem so far but see Rheumy  later this

month.

I also get mouth sores and have found a great remedy in baking soda.

I put a little bit in my hand, then mix water to make a paste, I put

that on the sore for about a minute. The sore is usually gone the

next day.

Take Care,

River

I was getting pretty bad fever blister-type things on my lips when I first

started the Metho and just scrubbed them gently with hydrogen peroxide, which

stopped them from spreading. It hurt a bit, but it did work. They stopped coming

on a month or so into the treatment, so I haven't had to worry about them

lately.

I had a similar experience with blisters on the inside of my lips shortly

after starting methotrexate - my doctors included a review of my potassium

levels in my monthly blood panel at some point within the first year after

starting MTX based on my report of various symptoms and discovered I was

severely potassium deficient - once I was taking sufficient SlowK to bring

my potassium level within normal ranges the mouth sores disappeared and have

not been problem since (2+ years) although I've continued to take MTX since

2007 to present day. Ask your doctor to check your potassium level the next

time you have blood work. This was my experience but the connection seemed

clear to me in terms of results. Good luck!
