ACR ABSTRACT - Minocycline and doxycycline therapy in RA: incide

Hi

I've been using minocycline for 5 years with good results. I had

plaquenil as well at first but am now only on minocycline. The

abstract does not indicate how much mino the research subjects were

taking but if they had more pain it sounds as though they were on too

high a dose. It's a long-term low-dose treatment and the recommended

starting dose is 100mg three times a week which I found effective.

Some very sensitive people have to start at 50mg. It takes a few

months to notice the difference and most of us used prednisone while

it was kicking in. I guess you have researched this yourself because

you know about it, but if you haven't, please go to the Roadback

Foundation and look at the many scholarly articles, the protocol for

doctors and the inspiring stories by other RA (and other auto-immune

diseases) sufferers. There is a lot you can print out and take to

your rheumy if he doesn't know much about it. As the research says,

little is known about the use of this drug in RA, but a lot is known

by the more than 4,000 people at the Roadback website and the

rheumaticsupport group.

>Rheumatologists have not embraced MC and DC as primary

> treatment options for RA and reserve their use primarily in patients

> with long-standing disease refractory to other agents. These drugs

are

> generally well-tolerated with skin complaints, nausea, and dizziness

> being the most common patient-reported side effects.

What a shame they don't start people early on and wait until all

other things have failed! Most people get very minor side effects if

any. Let's hope it becomes more widely known because of people

wanting to try it despite their rheumy's misgivings.

I'll be interested to hear your progress. Please let us know.

Hi Ros,

Thanks for the info and encouragement. I am still taking the Enbrel and the

Plaquenil for now. I take 100mg of minocycline twice a day Mon, Wed. and Fri. So

far I haven't had any side effects. Wish me luck!
