Guest guest
Hi , Here's the deal. With the 2ml (50mg) preservative-free vials, you can draw up your first batch, and immediately draw up a second syringe that you then cap off and refrigerate for the next week. So you should be able to get 2 full doses from each 2ml vial for Aundrea. This what our rheumy recommended. It is no problem to just throw the used vials into the trash. For the needles, you can get a Sharpies hazardous medical waste container, like the ones you see at the doctor and hospitals, and dispose the needles in that container. When it is full, you need to find a place that accepts haz. med. waste to dump it. Personally, I just break off the end of the needle and wrap it in a wad of paper towel and throw it in our trash compacter. There ain't nothin' that's going to accidentally come in contact with that crushed needle after it's been compacted with other trash all week. Each city probably has their own way of handling this issue. Stacia and Hunter 8 systemic, iritis
Guest guest
Hi,. It sounds like arthritis that is not being controlled really well. Now that could be because he still needs the steroid and the taper is not quite working or the MTX is not kicked in yet. Have you talked with the dr about the fact he is having symptoms? The dr may want you to hold off on any more tapering for now. Or the dr may want to try another DMARD rather than the MTX, but I don't think the dr would change that after only 12 weeks. I am curious about one thing - what med is he chewing before bed? I have never heard of chewable MTX or steroid (although it has been a few years since last took prednisone). If a med is supposed to be swallowed, you should not chew it as that does something to the absorption and thus the effectiveness of the drug. I could be wrong - maybe there is chewable MTX, but if it is not, I would try to get him swallow it, as he may not be getting all the medicine, or try the injections. Many kids on the list use that and have great results. I hope Joe is doing better soon, Michele ( 18, pauci & spondy) MTX question Joe was started on Steriods and MTX on March 1st and now we are tapering the steriod and the MTX 7.5 mg (for a 4 y/o) has been on board for close to 12 weeks. He takes pills he chews before bed. The last two weekends he has complained of his R knee and ankle hurting. A week ago, he was better on Monday when I was going to take him to the doctor. Bt that weekend he wanted to be carried and he did not bear weight on his R knee Sunday morning and Sunday he said his ankle hurt. By the afternoon both days he was back to running around. Today, he was crabby this morning and laid around for a few hours and we gave him ibuprofen. His Right knee seemed warm. Once he got going he was better. Guest guest
Michele, Thanks for the response. Joe is chewing the MTX tablet that would be ideal to swallow whole. Injections is an idea or I think I have heard discussion drinking the injection. (correct me if I am wrong.) Joe's steriod is being taper 2.5 mg a month right now. The last two weekends have been the only times I have seen him appear to limp around. Otherwise, he has had no obvious joint concerns. We meet with the rheumatologist the beginning of June, it will make a calendar and discuss things. Guest guest
I know this response is a bit late (I''m not 691 emails behind!) but I thought I'd give an update on Lexi in regards to this too! She's now been on the MTX (drinking the injection liquid) for about 11 weeks now, and we just tried slowly tapering her off the prednisone too with no luck! This is the second taper since being on MTX and this time we went from 2 mL twice a day for about 4 days, to 1 mL 2x a day, then .5 twice a day, then .5 once a day - all over about a 9 day period. After being off of it for 2 days, she's back to crying in the evening, at nnight, and in the morning about her knees and legs hurting, as well as her wrists, shoulders, and hips now (new pain we've never had except with her last nasty virus a few weeks ago.) We called our rheumy today who is upping her mtx dose to .5 (was .2 ml), and putting her back on the 1 mL twice a day prednisone to see if that will work. Lexi's been on prednisone now since December, and I don't know if that is typical to have to hang onto it for this long - even with mtx on board? What is this sudden new pain now in several other joints? Still no fevers though, so I'm pretty baffled by the new joint involvement. Thanks for letting me update! Guest guest
-... prednisone tapers are the worse they can be soo hard. Nichoals has been on prednisone for 18 months now. We have been trying to taper for 17 of those months. With each taper his systemic symptoms would return and we would add or increase his other meds. its been a rollercoster of ups and downs. Until you find the right combo of other drugs i thinks its very hard to come off the prednisone. I feel we have the right combo for Nick now... and his pred taper is going well. im hoping 2 more months and we will be done!!!! Guest guest
Joe has been on MTX and Pred for almost 3 months. He had his prednisone dose down to 7.5 mg from 15mg. We decreased over one month. The ped rheum wants to do a slow taper decreasing the dose every 2-4 weeks. by 2.5 mg. then we were hoping to reeval at 5 mg and see how to proceed. We did the liquid MTX for the first time last week and he is back on prednisone at 15mg and we go to the rheumatologist Tues. to hopefully come up with a new game plan. I think he needs the MTX injections. Joe after 2 months of meds on board recently had joint involvment. JRA is crazy. Best Wishes. Guest guest
, I'm sorry to hear of the mtx/pred struggles without getting rid of the pain. It is very typical for many on this list to have been on pred for 6 mos to a year and some for years. The goal is to find the right DMARD combo that will allow you te get off theh pred as quickly as possible. But as we all know, this takes time. You're still in the process. I'm glad to see the mtx dose was increased. Ask your rheumy what the max. dose is for Lexi's weight. I would get on that dose and if still not better, it'll be time to actually start the injections. Like you, we took baby steps with the mtx for a good 6 months -- meaning, we were on the max dose but did pills first, then injecting into juice, and then finally getting relief when we started the actual injections. All that just to avoid a needle. Knowing what I know now, I would have started right off with the injections, but I didn't know then what I know now... Guest guest
thanks for the response. We'll see how this new higher dose of mtx will do, then try the taper in a few weeks again. Have you thought about taking it Friday night, and then by Monday morning you should feel better? I take mine on Saturday night, that gives me a chance to rest up. Guest guest
, I am on metho injectable and I have forgotten. Nothing happened, when I remembered I just took it. Also, before surgery I had to stop and couldn't take it for about 6 weeks. Everything was okay. At the end of the 6 weeks the ra flared up but that was to be expected. Guest guest
Once I took it a day late because I was driving home from a trip. I have also taken reduced doses a couple of times so I would feel good enough for certain activities. There's a little flexibility with MTX, I think. A nurse I know said that her rheumy told her that it's o.k. for her to skip once in awhile. Good luck with the school prep! Guest guest
Definitely hold it till next week. I had the same thing happen when I was on MTX but instead of holding it I took it and ended up in the hospital. My rheumi said its always best to let your immune system have as much strength as it can to fight those kind of bugs. Missing one dose wont be to detramental, but if you suppress her immune system and she can't get fight off the bug it would be way worse. Hope she feels better soon! Guest guest
Thanks so much for your advice ...It does seem like her immune system is already so compromised so your explanation makes a great deal of sense to me. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day..So far her fever hasn't broke and she is extremely lethargic, but I was able to get her to eat a popsicle and 1/2 cup of chix broth. She is sleeping with me tonight so that I can keep a watch on the fever. thanks again for your quick response... Guest guest
, If you give Drea the MTX and she is dehydrated it causes the MTX to be more toxic. Just skip it this week.Missing 1 dose should not cause a flare up of Arthur. We just had to skip the MTX and Enbrel due to pneumonia. I hope Aundrea feels better soon. My son ended up staying home today as well. He has a sore throat and headache..He slept for 4 hours and woke up feeling lots better..When I went to the school to get their homework they said they had sent over 50 students home sick with fevers and sore throats...Ughhh somehow in this warm weather of az. I thought we wouldn't have the same winter bugs! :-) No escaping that I guess! Are you having a good week? I feel the beginnings of a cold with the sore throat, etc. You know me, with the whole strep issue! Caitlin and I shared a (yes, I was bad, but it tasted oh so yummy!) Strawberry Tallcake at Ruby's last night and now I feel crappy:( Other than that, I am having a good week here. Shopping and decorating mostly. Learning the area daily and even found a short cut into town yesterday. Pretty funny, take one road and think 'hey this looks familiar' and bam there you are. Although, I must admit, I now look at a lot of these roads, especially the ones with steep, winding hills, and think 'good Lord how do these people get down the road with the ice without sliding into the main road, into a pole or off the darn thing.' I don't care what people say 4wheelers aren't going to keep you ON the road with ice! How is your shopping going? Any new developments on the chiropractor office? Take care. Guest guest
Kathy, I didn't realize that the Benadryl was for headaches etc. as well. I assumed it was for nausea only??? Hmmm.... My dr. gave me some migraine meds last night and I am feeling good right now. I was also mistaken after my husband re-read my prescription and I am to continue taking 5 pills for a month. I almost took 6 pills this Friday. I really need to pay more attention or could be in trouble. Thank you so much for replying, I know you are answering these questions over and over and over. We all appreciate it. Thanks! Ontario [Editor's Note: I'm so glad the migraine pills are working. IF the MTX works some magic on you, you may have found a way to eliminate the headaches. Chemical changes (such as those caused by taking medication) can bring on migraines. Benadryl is often used as a PREVENTATIVE treatment as it has been shown to lessen the severity and frequency of migraines, particularly if a migraine is caused as a reaction to chemical changes from medication. So - you might want to try Benadryl an hour or two before you next take MTX and if it doesn't help, you can then use the migraine pills.
