Guest guest
Charisa: We have definetely found that weather affects Ashli's arthritis. Even the doctor mentioned this fact to us. We live in Ohio and the months of Oct - Feb. are the worse for Ashli. Especially in the morning, because it cools down so much at night and hard to keep Ashli covered. She wiggles all night long. Couples suggestions the doctor gave us: waterbed that can warm (out of question here), heating blanket (we do this but keep on lowest setting, kind of makes me nervous), pj's with legs, etc. Anything to keep them as warm as possible during the night. The tummy problem is a constant one with medications. I'm sure a lot of people on here will answer you. I've heard a lot about taking maalox and stuff like that at the same time as the meds. I know we have a problem once Ashli starts school. She has to make 400 mg motrin after lunch and if she doesn't eat enough she gets sick in the afternoon and that affects school! Anyone have a suggestion on this? I've told her and told her about eating everything, but days happen when she's just not hungry or hates what she has! We did switch from naproxen to motrin becuase of stomach problems. God Bless, Sandi A. (Ashli's Mom)
Guest guest
We were able to get Kelsey a waterbed right when she was diagnosed, and it has been WONDERFUL! I can tell the heat really helps her.
Guest guest
, Fevers haven't really been a problem for Kelsey, so I have never thought of the waterbed heat making fevers worse. Something to think about, for sure. She kicks around in her sleep, never staying covered, so the heat really helps keep her warm and joints loose. Maybe you should ask Skyler's doctor if a waterbed would be a good idea for him or not. Kelsey's doctor says its important to keep jra kids warm at night, but we never discussed fevers. I've also been told an electric blanket would be good, but I'm not sure if that would be a good idea for the little ones, like Skyler and Kelsey. Definitely something to think about. Take care, MIchelle
Guest guest
, As JRA kids often have fevers with their painful flares, have you found the heated bed has any bad side effects with the fevers or increases sweating? Though I know the heat really eases the pain I am allways afraid of heat packs making the fever worse for Skyler. I am trying to find him a quality mattress I can afford that will fit in his crib or perhaps a small bed. The water bed idea could be an option for us, he hurts so badly from sleeping on the current one that I have him frequently sleep in bed w/me or even on the couch. Also, Skyler sweats likea marathon runner when he sleeps. Hate for him to get dehydrated if I put him in a heated bed. Guest guest
Ela, Tell your doctor he's nuts. There is a huge connection for many people between RA symptoms and changes in barometric pressure, so much so for me that my family calls me the human barometer. For example, yesterday was beautiful with a great forecast for the coming week, yet I started hurting like mad and could barely use my hands. Woke up this morning to rain instead of the sunny day that had been forecast. Guess I should apply for the weather guy's job. So you're not nuts, your doctor is. Guest guest
http://arthritis.about.com/health/arthritis/cs/weather/index.htmterms=weathe r Some say yes, some say no (usually researchers, not arthritics, saying no LOL ), here is a site where you can read about the different opinions and research, but if you ask me..YES! I always feel worse with changes in the weather, the more extreme the change, the worse my reaction. I think barometric pressure affects me the most, though extreme temperatures in either direction can also. I hope you get hte antibiotics, they have made me feel a lot better. Morning stiffness in one area in which I have gotten a very good response. It used to last all day, now is sometimes not at all, or at the worst, about one hour on a bad day. Good luck! And if you'd like to post some more..we'd love to get to know you better. : ) Liz G > HI I am new member. Have RA and I am thinking about taking > antibiotic. I live 2 miles from Ocean . Guest guest
Hi Suranjen - I KNOW humidity makes me hurt so much more. Here where I am (Boston area) we've been getting so much more humidity than yrs ago (global warming??). This summer was bad, but the spring and winter is always the worse - the damp, moist air makes my body hurt so much. Come to think of it, the fall isn't that great either.... I yearn to move to a place that has a better climate. Like Hawaii. Or parts of Italy. (I can dream....) Take care. Lyn P.S. ELA - Your doctor is NUTS. I wonder if he or she is young - 'cause even osteoarthritis is aggravated by (one of my former drs clarified it - said it was the " barametric pressure changes " that made the pain worse) the weather! Whatever the cause, YOU know what your body tells you better than any dr, as long as you pay attention. Then sometimes, our bodies shout to us anyway to get our attention! ------------- rheumatic Weather > ------------------------------------------------------------------ > HI I am new member. Guest guest
Cripes, what a doctor! Everyone knows weather bothers both kinds of arthritis. My orthopedic doc told me heat and humidity is the worst on it and she is right because i feel best on really cold frigid, crisp winter days. Just today had long discussion with my regular doc including some on weather and hip replacements and arthritis. He has a wife who had broken hip and multiple leg breaks and plates in leg from an accident so he knows all about her being effected by it. Everytime we get a big weather change I will ache kinda bad that day and since the last cooling (like from 100+ to 80+, LOL) I have had a lot of back pain. Truely mind boggling that a doctor doesnt know weather effects arthritis. Where do these idiots pop up from?

My grandmother,my mother, myself and my daughters have all complained with headaches or body aches when the weather changes. I have lived in Calif-Montana and Idaho and I personally feel worse in the colder climates. However, thunderstorms (which you definately get in warm climates) seem to be the worst. My mom says she always feels worse(headaches) when, as she puts it, two weather systems are fighting over us. It seems like Dr.s used to think you were crazy if you linked increased pain with weather changes but now they(Dr.s) even ask the question on the new patient sheets. Do they finally believe?? Too bad my Grandmother (REST HER SOUL) isn't here to see that. She used to get so mad at Dr.s when they brushed off the thought of it. I usually don't do well in high humidity either (ASTHMA) but when my husband and I finally made it to Hawaii I felt soo great! I told him that when he retires I really would like to live there. At least part-time. Back to weather induced pain. I used to joke with the local weatherman that I would call him whenever I could feel the weather changing but all I would be able to tell them is that it is changing but not when or how. Everyone be Happy--Like I tell " NORMAL PEOPLE " when they ask how do you stand all the pain- I respond that on most days it is definately better than the alternative. Spring brings hope! Enjoy it! Guest guest
Yeah... weather changes are horrible. I live on the southwest coast of Canada and when the weather changes to wet (our practically normal state) and cold, I just want to take my meds and go to bed! Stress is another problem, and today our community is living with the possibly preventable death of a 3 year old, a situation that reminds me of an experience I had several years ago when in my work I discovered the body of a 3 month old baby who was killed by his father (who was standing behind me at the time I saw the baby). This is definitely not a good day for me... -----Original Message-----From: picbond@... Guest guest
Mike - I think changes in weather bother my joints too - and not just necessarily cold. The change from cold to hot weather bothers me as well, in fact I think more so. The heat seems to make my joints swell, probably because of fluid retention. Oh, let's just face it - EVERYTHING makes me hurt!! I'm sick of PA today. Hoping tomorrow is better,

If it is a big storm it starts a day or two ahead, a small one or a change in the temp, expecially cold, I will know about a day. Then the day of the storm the pain will let up some. Sounds crazy but that is truely how it is. I love the warm (not hot) sunshine. The heat affects the psorasis for me. I should say too much heat or too much sunshine and the cold affects not only the joints but the whole body too. Soaking in the sunshine today. Guest guest
Dena, I, too, tend to get headaches when the air pressure is changing (like from one kind of system to another). My arthritis seems to be aggravated on these days too. Rain doesn't bother me--unless it's in the process of changing from hot to cold or vice versa. =\ Sinead >From: puttinpugs@... >Reply- > >Subject: [ ] Re: Weather >Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 02:43:21 -0000 > > > > In a message dated 30/04/01 07:40:05 GMT Daylight Time, >momscmbc@a... > > writes: > > > > > > > > > > > Sorry to disappoint you, but you are not " SPECIAL " (don't mean to >be unkind > > here!!). > > > > At the moment, I am having BIG problems with the PA around and >inside my > > ears, (some of you may remeber me posting about 'ear' problems!!). > > I think they have now, (both), become infected, (Dr's visit >tomorrow!), which > > for some reason is causing me pain down the side of my neck, and in >the upper > > half of my chest. What we have to remember, is that sometimes, we have 'good' days, and these are the ones that we have to cherish. Guest guest
The Weather Channel says " mostly sunny " which is great! Fall is my favorite time of year - warm days and " nippy " at night! I wore panty hose to church yesterday (big mistake) and was dying! It was 87 and very humid -- had to stand outside while my 6-year-old got soccer pictures taken (I was still dressed from church of course). Can't wait to be able to have a fire in the fireplace!
