Guest guest
Hi Margaret, I can't answer for the thyroid problem but if your daughter has RA, she must be on a DMARD (the toxic drugs as you label them) to avoid joint damage and the earlier you get on them, the better, this is a proven fact. None of us with RA would chose them if they weren't absolutely necessary. I know this is a lot to grasp in the beginning and you probably have more reading to do on the subject to fully understand the ramifications of this disease. Many of us here, once we find the drug that works for us individually, do very well. Since your daughter now has a little one (congrats) she needs to find that " cocktail " , to be the mom she wants to be. All the best, in PA [ ] RA/thryoid Hi Has anybody got any experience of RA and either over/underactive thyroid? What were the symptoms? My daughter is called an 'enigma' in the RA dept as her disease does not follow the normal course. She was diagnosed just a few weeks after delivering her first baby. HYPERthryoidism is common in these circumstances. Not sure that the thyroid blood tests are that reliable as they are not with me and I am underactive. She has lost a lot of weight too but managing to put it back slowly. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we find the consultants a waste of time and all they do is push toxic drugs at her. She has had more relief from food elimination/probiotics. Thankyou. Margaret
Guest guest
Hi Margaret: I don't have any info in the thyroid department. I did want to post though because I am 40 and was just diagnosed with erosive RA this past November. I also am one who will not take the " toxic " medications at this point. I went to a Holistic MD who has had me do an elimination diet as well as many supplements including probiotics. I have not noticed any change in my joint pain yet, however a rash that I have had prior to my diagnosis for 2 years has completely went away. I hope your daughter continues to do well and they find something positive for her with her thyroid. Donna > > Hi Has anybody got any experience of RA and either over/underactive thyroid? Guest guest
Hi Margaret, In addition to RA, I also have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, so I can swing back and forth between hyper/hypo thyroid quite easily. I had half of my thyroid removed about 3 years ago, and it was actually what " set off " my RA and caused me to start having all sorts of issues with that. The best thing for me as far as the thyroid is concerned is to keep it under control with meds (I take Synthroid). My endocrinologist monitors things very closely and the meds are keeping my thyroid from totally shutting down right now. If you have specific questions, I would be happy to answer. If your daughter doesn't have a good endocrinologist, she should really try to find one. My general practitioner really wasn't the one to handle this type of situation. Guest guest
Hi Thanks for replying to my post. My daughter is on Sulphasalazine and Zyflamend but refuses MTX. Funnily enough I spoke to a friend of mine whose daughter had exactly the same symptoms as mine after having her baby but her joint pain went after a few weeks. She has now found out that the pain was caused by drinking COKE. Whenever she drinks it the pain comes back. I am yet to find out whether it was Diet Coke or regular as if it is the Diet one then aspartame is said to cause joint pain amongst other things. I really do think it is a food link as she was SO good when eliminating foods. However, the weight loss means that she is eating everything she shouldn't and I did wonder about hyperthryoid... I have also just stumbled upon something for ALL autoimmune diseases you might want to look into - Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) ldnnow.co.uk and others. Very interesting.
