Guest guest
Dear Rebekah, PLEASE do not consider RAI. Please read info on this at iThyroid.com, and read the archives for this site. RAI is a permanent non-solution to a temporary illness caused by nutritional imbalance, which can be addressed (read the supplement list at iThyroid). Once you've nuked your thyroid, there's no going back, and you are dependent on doctors for the rest of your life. Please reconsider, and speak to people at this site who have been here for a while. Guest guest
Hello , I recently experienced the same exact eye symptom. Here was my situation: I was (am) on Tapazole, 30 mg a day, and hadn't taken it for about an entire week. All of a sudden, I was experiencing that same kind of swirling vision (peripherally) and everything was so bright it gave me a mild headache. I panicked and the panic attack triggered a bunch of other stuff, like a stomachache and tingling in my limbs, but that's another story. Anyway, I called my doctor and asked about it. He said I was experiencing a migraine. I told him that I've never had one before, and told him that I didn't even get one of those excruciating headaches I've heard others tell of. He said it was stress. I thanked him kindly and informed him that I was under no stress at the time. Then he told me that having not taken my medicine for several days, my body was under physical stress that I was unaware of. The result was a migraine -- swirling vision being a *major* telltale sign. He also said that an excruciating headache doesn't necessarily have to accompany a migraine episode. If you've just had RAI, I'm assuming you're not on your thyroid meds right now, and your body is probably pretty stressed with the whole experience of your thyroid being zapped. Maybe just maybe, your eye problem is a result of something similar to what I had. I don't know if this will help at all, but I thought I'd drop you a note anyway, just in case. I hope you feel better! Rebekah P.S. - I'm seriously considering RAI myself. Can you tell me what you think of it so far (besides the eye thing)? Thanks!! Guest guest
Hi and Rebekah I don't know if this is the same as what you are talking about, but I have had vision disturbances too but it was before I was even diagnosed, but it was while I was feeling ill. I have had lesser versions of it since aswell. I had swirling brightness off to the peripheral right of my vision, which slowly encroached on my central field of vision and then for about an hour, If I put my hand out straight in front of me and moved it slightly to the right of me, I could not see it. There was still brightness somewhere, but I am not sure where - for me it is like being underwater in a swimming pool in bright sunshine... the kind of brightness that is like a rip in a film. It is difficult to describe... as if my field of view has simply got alot smaller on the right hand side. I checked that this was the case in both my eyes separately by holding my hand over each eye in turn. It was. My GP said that it was probably a painless migraine. It had not happened again to that extent, but I do have times when I can't see something off to the right untill I really try (does that make sense). Also, when reading a book, it sometimes seems as if the words disappear for a split second as my eye gets to them, it's a bit like reading with a stutter, actually more of a stammer! My optician thought I should have a brain scan because of the chance of pituitury tumour, but my doctor thinks this is nonsense. Is this because pituitury problems are associated with hypo rather than hyper (I am hyper). Hope that all makes sense to you. Guest guest
, I have not had RAI so can't say if your eye symptoms are related to that. Perhaps someone else has more experience witht the after effects of RAI. I would say you should get in touch with your doctor right away, though. Good luck. Guest guest
Rebekah, I've had classical migraine headaches all my life -- 45 plus years of them and never once has a doctor told me " an excruciating headache does not necessarily have to accompany a migraine episode " -- ????? What kind of doctor (specialty, that is) told you this? Has anyone else ever been told this? Thanks. Helen

Guest guest
HI Stacia- Our dr. told us that iritis is usually asymptomatic(although sometimes it may cause redness, burning etc.) She said that redness can be an indicator of something else going on as a complication/side effect to the iritis and that if Genevieve ever starts to show any visible symptoms to bring her in immediately. I would call your dr. It won't hurt. Take care and good luck. Guest guest
Ok, All of this eye talk is starting to make me nervous. My son Bronson has a history of getting pink eye often whenever he catches a cold. This has been happening since long before his diagnosis of systemic JRA. Well, he had an eye appt almost 6 months ago to check for inflammation due to the JRA, and the dr said everything looked great. Well, just a few days ago, Bronson started having a stuffy nose, and then a day later, his right eye was really reed and there was some goopy stuff in the corner of it (pink eye). Well, I have eye drops for pink eye from when he had it the last time (July, coincidentally when he got real sick) and I went ahead and started him on them, and now the eye is fine. I am worried because I am now thinking maybe I should have called his doctor?? He is still off all med right now due to his problems with mt, and the rheumatologist just wants to watch him for now since he has done so well and his labs are normal. But, could this pink eye be a sign of problems to come? Or is this just something he seems to be suseptable to? He has another eye appt March 22, and I was never told of any signs or symptoms to watch out for with the eyes, I guess because it's so uncommon for systemc kids to have eye issues (but, then there's Hunter). Any advice is appreciated!!!! Guest guest
Hey Jodi. They say that pink eye and Uveitis/Iritis are not related, but I am not sure. Caroline has pink eye two weeks ago and now she is in a full blown flare in both eyes. I wouldn't hesitate to take Bronson into the eye doctor. Hopefully they will see you soon. Our's only works one day a week, so we were lucky to get in with him! The eyes are tricky as I am sure you have guessed. Our doctor told us that you can't detect anything by looking at them so it's best to bring them in! Guest guest
Hi Jodi, Like Bronson, my son has the systemic form of JRA too. He hasn't had any ocular inflammation in the almost 9 years since being diagnosed with JRA but he does have a couple other eye issues (recent-onset nearsightedness, monitoring of steroid-induced cataracts, and twice a year testing for retinal damage that very infrequently may occur due to the use of Plaquenil/hydroxychloroquine). Josh has had several bouts of conjunctivitis though. Each and every time the eye doctor has wanted us to bring him in. When the doctor was doing surgeries for basically an entire day, and Josh woke up with his eyelids stuck together with all that gunky discharge and eye redness, he still wanted Josh to be seen by his pediatrician ... rather than me just beginning a course of treatment using the drops we still had leftover from the previous occasion. I think because of his history of having a chronic illness that they tend to be more cautious with any health problem that arises. Maybe you should phone the eye doctor and ask for his opinion, just to be on the safe side? Take Care, Georgina Jodi Dowell wrote: > Ok, All of this eye talk is starting to make me nervous. Guest guest
Thanks Georgina! There seems to be a link between the JRA and pink eye, or is it just a coincidence that it seems that quite a few kids with JRA get pink eye quite often? My friend's kids rarely, if ever get pink eye, and same with my younger son, he has never had it. I find that interesting. Anyways, thanks again for your advice, I will call and ask the eye dr, plus, we will be seeing him on March 22, which is good. Guest guest
How about this for thought? Earlier in the day, the day Genevieve was diagnosed with JRA, I also took her into the family dr. because her eyes were red, etc. She was diagnosed with pink eye. I gave her the prescribed ointments and it cleared up immediately. (None of my other children got it!) One week later in a routine opthomology screen, she was diagnosed with uveitis. Ever since then, I have been questining whether it was just the beginning of uveitis flare up that displays pink eye like symptoms and she was perhaps misdiagnosed with pink eye. Just a thought, is it possible that some of the apparent pink eye in some JRA patients are misdiagnosis of something else (uveitis related) that many dr.s would not think to consider because it is more rare? Guest guest
Therese... It is just freaky how many cases start out like this. I am soo surprised that there is nothing out there on this type of link. It is similar to the strep/systemic link. It really is mind boggling. Caroline's case was diagnosed as " minor " pink eye with a " minor flare " . Two weeks later we are at no pink eye, but MAJOR flare in both eyes. Things that make you go hmm.... I know that if Caroline ever gets pink eye again I will be racing into the opthamolgist! Alia and Caroline, age 2, pauci and uveitis > How about this for thought? Guest guest
Hi : What does it mean when they see a white cell in the eye? Caitlin wants contacts desperately. The ophtom. said she wouldn't try them with her until she is off some of her meds due to dryness. Has Christian tried wearing them recently? Or are they still to uncomfortable? Who do you see for an opthom? How is Christian doing? Energy coming back? How are his joints? The if's will drive you crazy if you let them run away on you. Hindsight is 20/20 and I have no doubt you would do anything for Christian, but we can't do what we don't know. I hope you all had a chance to enjoy this great weather we had this weekend. Take care. Guest guest
My son just had an appt with the Opthomologist and she said that she saw one (1) white cell in the left eye and that she wants us to come back in one month. Christian's normal eye perscription in 1.50 for both eyes but now it is 2.00 for the right eye and 2.25 for the left eye. When Christian first got sick in October and we didn't know what was happening, he had eye issues too. His eyes were extremely sensitive and he stopped wearing his contacts all together because he said they hurt. His eyes became red and irritated, this went on for a couple of months. Our Ped. gave us antibiotic ointment and it seemed to get rid of the redness but the eyes were still sensitive. The Opthomologist told us that since Christian is systemic and ANA negative that it would be rare if he had Uveitis but that it could happen and she would rather proceed with caution. He is already taking methotrexate and predisone, which the Doctor seemed to be satisfied with. Of course, I'm wondering all the IF's....if I had taken him for the eye exam earlier could we have perhaps avoided the vision change. I also wonder what the eye exam would have shown when his eyes were so sensitive and he was so sick. The Doctor did tell me that if he showed any signs of redness or sensitivity to light, that she wanted to see him right away. > > > Hi all, > > > > > > Hunter is 7 and does have some " mild " iritis as of a month or so > >ago. > > > > > > My question is this: he has some broken blood vessels on the > > > outside part of the white of his eye. You did what you thought was best,,with the information that you had,,at the time. Logan goes to his eye Dr every 6 months,,and he still continues to go up,in his prescription. He is currently at +5.50,in one eye and +5.25 in the other. He has had his glasses since he was 3,,and it seems like every single time,,,it just gets worse and worse. Guest guest
Therese- You're absolutely right. 's pediatrict opthamologist advised me to bring her into her, not the pediatrician, even if we thought she might have pink eye. A pediatrician or family doctor will be likely to assume it's pink eye, and they don't have the slit lamp needed to check for inflammation. The stress has caused me to go in the opposite direction, I've gained. I need to get motivated and take it off...bikini weather is coming, you know! Ha, just joking! Liz mentioned that you son is a football player. Is that correct? I'd love to have Christian and Teddy get together some time. > I agree with Kim. You could end up dead worrying about all the " what > ifs " that you think of. I ended up losing 45 lbs to stress in the first > year of this stuff. Try to move forward. Good luck, hh
Guest guest
. I spoke to our Rhuemy this weekend and they indicated to me that a 1+, 2+, or 3+ were VERY bad, but if they could indicate the number of cells that it was better. Which is why they are probably waiting a month to see you. Definitely bring him in if he has light sensitivity though Don't think about the what if's. You did the right thing. You never know with this disease. One litle thing can turn into something huge and vice versa. Sometimes I think it is as much a guessing game as luck!
