Guest guest
Last year my rheumy detected a heart murmur and sent me for an echo. It turned out to be aortic valve regurgitation. I did not have rheumatic fever as a child. My rheumy said that RA doesn't usually cause valve problems. Guest guest
Hi all, I had a bad episode of something when I was little and I am now wondering if it was rheumatic fever. My mother told me to tell the rheumy on my first appt that I was sick when I was little and they thought it was RA, but she did not call it rheumatic fever. I just remember I had chronic strep several times a year my whole childhood. In this episode as a kid, swelled up like a balloon and my fever was so high I slept for days. What is another name for rheumatic fever used in the 1970's? Other recollection was plastic bags on my feet but wonder if that was fever hallucinations. > > Just reading some interesting information on Lupus at the > Hopkins > > site. > > > > KD > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > > >
Guest guest
Scarlet Fever is another result of tonsilitis that's left untreated. It causes the skin to peel off the feet, maybe it's that? I don't know any other names for RF in total. Some of the symptoms of RF have names like Sydnehams Chorea is sometimes referred to as St Vitrus's dance. I had mine in the early 70's too - it was pretty rare by then once penicillin became widely available to treat the Strep. > > > Just reading some interesting information on Lupus at the > > Hopkins > > > site. > > > > > > KD > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi Sue It would definately pay you to find out if you have a bicuspid aortic valve ( an aortic valve with only 2 leaflets instead of 3) if not you may well have had RF as a child. It's not uncommon if the carditis is the only Rheumatic Fever symptom for a child to have what is referred to asymptomatic Rheumatic Fever ie where it does not actually cause any noticable symptoms. My mum had this and had her valve replaced last year although she'd been aware of the murmur for quite some years. Usually the regurgitation from RF in the later years will be accompanied by aortic stenosis but this can also just be from age etc. I hope you don't mind me saying but I hope you're now scheduled to have regular echos, depending on the grade of the regurgitation etc it could be every 1-3 years, to keep a check on this and assume they all advised you about surgery, dental work etc and prophyllaxis antibiotics before any procedures because of it? > > Last year my rheumy detected a heart murmur and sent me for an echo. > It turned out to be aortic valve regurgitation. Guest guest
I had Scarletina as a child (mild case) then again as an adult. I also had mono at 13. Makes you wonder about the connections.... Betsy
Guest guest
Not sure if this will help any, when I was 18 was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis and chronic tonsilitis. I was on antibotic therapy for both until I was around 21. Since then had lots of issues with my tonsels and recently had them taken out in November. My son who just got over scarlet fever had it so severe that the ER doc told me if I would have let it go for more then a day more it would have turned into rheumatic Fever. I asked her if there was any connection between RF and RA and she told me not that she was aware of. [ ] Rheumatic Fever Anyone else? Hi Joy Wow this is interesting about your Rhuematic Fever. I've heard this is quite high in RA, & connective tissue disease etc patients. Me too - I had it at age 8 then recurrances as an adult (which were initial misdiagnosed that's why it's plural!). Curious to hear from anyone else who had Rhuematic Fever - or their RA or other disease started from Streptoccocus A (Tonsilitis) and which symptoms they had? I had the whole range of symptoms from arthritis, fever, carditis and chorea (which as an adult was ballistic and finally gave me my correct diagnoses). Anyone else have valvular heart damage from their RF? Ie aortic, or mitral regurgitation and or stenosis? Often just referred to as a " heart murmur " ? > Just reading some interesting information on Lupus at the Hopkins > site. > > KD > > > > ------------------------------------ > >
Guest guest
Thanks , Will have to find out what it was so I have my facts straight for my 1st rheumy appt in March. Guest guest
Hi , My rheumy is only the second doctor to detect a heart murmur. The other one was my radiation oncologist, and this was in 2002. So I don't know if I've always had it and it hasn't been detected, or it's something that just developed. My endocrinologist can still not detect it. My aortic valve regurgitation was said to be very mild. My rheumy said that he would send me for another echo in the future to see if it had gotten worse. Nobody said anything about antibiotics before surgery dental work, etc. I'll ask my rheumy about this when I see him next month. Thanks. Guest guest
Hi, I just remember that I had a fever, sore throat...not actually high and terrible pain in all my joints. The doc wanted me to be hospitalized but my parents said they would care for me at home. They carried me every where I needed to go. I actually had it twice. once at 4 yrs. and once at 6 yrs. I do have Mitral Valve Prolapse now and have to take antibiotics before dental work or surgeries. I also had Mono but that was when I was in my early 20's. I never really feel like I have a lot of energy and always feel like I am moving slower and doing things slower than other people. I get tired out easily. Found out about the YA in my early 40's but probably have had it since the birth of my daughter in my early 30's. Funny when I asked the doc if the rheumatic fever and RA were linked she said no ... Guest guest
Joy, A link between rheumatic fever and rheumatoid arthritis has not been established. Guest guest
I had a very bad case of German Measles with a very high fever around age 9. Needed glasses after that. Not sure if German Measles is any relation to RF? > From: Barbara <bcreedon@...> > Subject: [ ] Re: Rheumatic Fever Anyone else? > > Date: Tuesday, February 17, 2009, 11:23 AM > Hi: > > Yes, I have had Rheumatic Fever at age 4. Guest guest
Hello, I was diagnosed with mitral valve regurge about 5 years at that time the cardiologist said I must have had rheumatic fever when I was small. I know I was a very sick kid at times, but my mother never told me anything about rheumatic fever and now that she is gone I really don't have anyone to ask. I also have severe RA. I know my mom had scarlett fever when she was a child and almost died from it, that was in the 1940's She had Lupus and passed away from complications due to the Lupus. I guess I got her bad genes. Thanks for listening..Sandy in PA
Guest guest
Just to clarify what I actually meant, especially to and Joy. There is no link between Rheumatic Fever itself and RA however there is a link between Streptoccocus A (Strep A) - which causes both Rheumatic Fever and Scarlet Fever and Reactive Arthritis. There is a known form of arthritis caused by Strep A (tonsilitis) called Post Streptoccoal Reactive Arthritis. It differs from Rheumatic Fever as the arthritis unlike in RF remains for years and is ongoing, and often starts sooner than RF after the intital infection. Arthritis in RF usually disappears in a few months and is non errosive and starts 4-6 weeks after the initial Strep A infection. What I was referring to was not only the above but also what I have personally noticed when reading these posts and others in chat group situations such as this. To my surprise and interest there seems an inconsistently high number of people who have had both RF and who have RA or another form of connective tissue disease, considering that RF is now an extremely rare disease - especially within particular cultural populations -ie it is still quite high in India and amongst the Aborignals in Australia but rare in the States, the rest of Australia and Europe etc > > > Just reading some interesting information on Lupus at the > > Hopkins > > > site. > > > > > > KD > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > > > > >
