Yes they are. I have one on the right little finger and one on the right elbow.

I am told they eventually go away - I sure hope it is soon.

rheumatic nodules

Hi,

What do nodules look like? I have a lumps measuring 3mm on the exterior of

each little finger mcjp which appears (white) when I clench my fist. I've had

those for about 2 months and another has just appeared on the thrid finger mcpj.

Are they nodules?

Hi: I have nodules - one on left wrist, one on rt. knee and rt. shin. They

are not white, they are just lumps. The leg ones sometimes really hurt with

an achey burning feeling. Do others have that pain right in the nodules?

Hi,

The little white lumps appear only when I clench my fist and appear white

presumably fort he same reasons as my knuckles appear white when i clench my

fist. They are also painless. I've read about (RA) nodules but am not sure

how they are recognised as such.

Hi Babs, Yes that achy burning feeling in the nodule is just like mine.

Sometimes so bad they will wake me up. No fun at all. Skippy

I have nodules on a few of my fingers and when I'm flaring, they really

hurt and the fingers that they're on have decreased mobility. When I'm

not flaring, they're not too bad unless you push directly on them.

The time you see the doctor, point them out and see what they say. I

have nodules on my fingers but mine are on the backs of the knuckles and

look like hard black lumps under the skin. When I first pointed them

out to my doctor, who likes to rush through appointments, he at first

said " oh they're just veins " but I made him stop and look properly and

he agreed that they were rheumatic nodes. The interesting thing I find

is that the fingers that have them are also the same fingers that have

the biggest mobility problems. Don't know if there's a correlation

there but I suspect there is.

Hi Skippy - I, too, have had sleep problems with that achey/burning pain in

nodules. Some days worse than others, others not so bad - like what a

noted (flares). I did notice the first one I got on leg looked like a raised

bruise but now they don't seem to have color.

The one I got on knee was about 2 weeks after I fell hard, landing on that

knee (clutz that I am). That knee really bothers me since. I assume that

because of this, nodules are more apt to appear at areas of injury?

Mimianne, they did shrink after starting methotrexate but are still there,

loud and clear.

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback!

At least you can make a fist! :) Still trying after 3 months - still no

luck. :( Docs just look at me and shrug as in " so, you're supposed to be

crippled, dummy " . doesn't bother me too much except when I'm trying to do

my daily chin-ups. :)

I guess I will just have to keep my nodules until I reach remission. I was

on Methotrexate once for over a year. Never again. I truly got sick &

tired of being sick and tired while I was on it. Be well, Skippy

Hi,

I can indeed make a fist and in fact appear gradually to be getting better.

I don't know why I'm getting better. I'm not taking anything other than a

small NSAID an anti-oxidant and the AP. I was getting better before

starting the AP but started it anyway just in case. So, I can't really

attribute the progress to that or anything else other than good fortune.

One of the things that seems clear with this disease is that there are

either many varieties, some more severe than others or that there is one

type which affects individuals with differenet degrees of severity.

Best wishes

Mike

,

As for myself I had my first nodules 10 yrs before my arthritis showed up in

the test.

And it was on my right hand, which I am right handed. And disappeared with out

doing anything.  Now, I have them on both elbows, hands, wrists, and ankles.  I

have already had the ones removed on my right hand and elbow. Along with the

full blown arthritis.  Sharla

Curious about these nodules, as they are soft lumps near joints that used

to be the most painful, at least in my case. Do they ever go away? Should

anything be done about them, or just leave them unless they cause pain?

Hi Donna,

I don't know how long you have had RA or how much you hurt, but I just made the

decision that quality of life was worth more than worrying about side effects.

I have had RA for approximately 11 or 12 years now, and went from being very

disabled to getting back to work after getting on Enbrel.  However, a lady from

Arizona told me she got completely over severe RA by cutting out all gluten.

An alternative medicine practitioner (sp) suggested that she try it and it

worked for her.  Gluten is in so many foods that it is hard to do correctly,

but some people manage to stay on a gluten-free diet.

Good luck if you try it.

Is that lady from Arizona on this chat group? If so, I would love to talk to

her, I just started a gluten free diet a week ago. I would love to hear her

story especially how long it took her to notice change. If she is not on the

chat group could you ask her Patsy? It would mean the world to me to hear about

her success.

Thank you,

Janet

Patsy -

I was " officially " diagnosed last November; however, my symptoms started a year

before that after a Strep infection, which led to scarletina rash, which then

led to joint pain. I am not seeing a rheumatologist right now because I am not

taking the medications yet. I am starting to think more and more that I may

start because I am starting to worry about the joint damage I am incurring. My

primary care doctor is very understanding, she tells me that no one can make me

take the meds and I have to be in a place where I am ready. I just am having a

hard time thinking about the fact that I am 40 and am going to have to take

these meds for life!

Thanks for telling me how you feel about it and how it is working for you!
