Guest guest
Well, we're always here for you. Most of us have been able to continue working. Of course, as I'm sure you've gathered it is very personal. Everybody handles it differently, some people manage very well and others have great difficulty. I think I was around in the middle. I was able to keep working, but that was about it. I got no exercise and I am just now trying to get my body back in shape. -dz- hepcacur wrote: That movie is a prime example of what this is like for us right now. Thank God for places like this group to come to for support and strength. (((Hugs))) Tammie and Marvin > > > > I know where you're coming from, Marvin. Sucks,> > don't it? Guest guest
nne, sounds to me like you need a new doctor.....but that is just my opinion. If I keep getting bypassed and shoved around when I am trying to get my information, then it is off to another doctor. This is a TEAM effort...and if the doctor can't work with you as a team, then for me....I would seek other help. debby [ ] Hi all Well, had my appt. with my gastro/hepatologist this afternoon, afteralmost a month on 30mg of Prednison and 75mg of Imuran. I just get sofrustrated to be in the presence of a "specialist" and still get the feelinghe doesn't have all (or only a few) answers. First of all, he didn't orderbloodwork for me. After the last appt. I even called his office and askedif he didn't want me to have bloodwork before this appt. I was told shechecked my chart and he didn't leave orders, so no. Of course, he forgot. If she had checked with him..... Anyway, he wants bloodwork for the next visit in a month, and meanwhilehe's going to start decreasing my Prednisone to 20mg starting the lst ofNov. One would think he would at least want to see the bloodwork first, butwhat do I know? He also said I'm in Stage 4, and I know that there are only4 stages, but what does it really mean? He said I had a lot of scarring andsome cirrhosis. After the next month, his plan is to taper me off thePrednisone in by 5mg a month. He wants me to stay on the Imuran for about ayear. By the way, to those feeling dizzy, etc., since I started on thePrednisone, I get what I call a "foggy" head. Kind of feels like when myblood pressure is elevated. Hopefully it will go away once the Prednisonegoes away. Welcome Cheryl and a good nite to all you lovely people.nne
Guest guest
Debby, I haven't been totally pleased since the first time I saw him. The problem is that he is one of two hepatologists in town and the other one is in the same group that he is. All of the gastros in town are in the same group, and they won't let you switch. I am one of three AIH patients that he has....he treats mostly HepC, so I think that he doesn't spend as much time researching as he should because it's for a minor part of his practice. He seems pleased that I do my own research and does listen to me. But half of the time I feel like I'm doing his work. I really feel sorry for patients who don't have the resources that I do, or the determination to find out more. A lot of patients just blindly believe their docs like they were God. Not me. He's not the one with the liver problem....I am. My insurance won't cover me out of state, and the nearest teaching hospital is about 6 hours away. I am my sole support and work a full week, and can't afford to take time from work for doctors' appts. that far away. Within the last 18 months I lost over 12 weeks from work for two hip surgeries and gallbladder surgery, and didn't have enough time on the books, so I lost big bucks. For right now, I'll continue to see him, since I do know that there is only one course of treatment, and I'm on it. For the rest of the stuff, I'll read my posts and continue my own researching to find out my answers. I just hope that I can stay well enough to continue working. I couldn't live on what disability pays. My ailments are not as debilitating as many who write on these posts, thank heavens. Hopefully they will not get worse. I just try to tough out the fatigue and aches and pains. I guess the worst thing for me was the realization that this ailment was not going to get fixed and I will have it for the rest of my life. My hip replacements were bad, but I knew that once I recovered, they would be good. Ironically, I had to have hip replacements because of avascular necrosis, caused by an overdose of Prednisone! So imagine my horror when I found out that the treatment for this was with Prednisone. I pray that it doesn't affect my other big joints, but I am having a bad problem with one knee. My GP has referred me to a rheumatologist in Nov. to get checked out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I know how other autoimmune diseases seem to go hand in hand with AIH. Thanks for listening! nne [ ] Hi all Well, had my appt. with my gastro/hepatologist this afternoon, afteralmost a month on 30mg of Prednison and 75mg of Imuran. Guest guest
nne, you have a very good attitude about your doctors. AND, if your doctor IS willing to listen to you, then go for it...be certain to leave a copy of what you have with him and document it. Then there will be NO reason if he mistreats your case. Just being cautious here. I understand about work. My husband and I work fully time, and it DOES take time out of your life when you have to be out for illnesses. Just curious, but do you by chance think your AIH was triggered by your surgeries? I have often wondered. When thinking of having a new knee put in, I wonder about the rejection. I had a titanium implant put in and have wondered if those surgeries help to trigger this too....just wondering. Take care and keep researching! debby [ ] Hi all Well, had my appt. with my gastro/hepatologist this afternoon, afteralmost a month on 30mg of Prednison and 75mg of Imuran. Guest guest
Gill.... I hope you don't get the chicken pox. Have you had it before? If so you won't get it but you could get shingles.which is a painful condition. If you show symptoms before being vaccinated then it's too late. May I remin you that the vaccination contains live virus and one whose immune system is compromised could get the disease from thevaccination itself. Chickenpox is a very contagious disease so you sound like you're between a rock and a hard place. Also the virus isn't treated, only the symptoms... it's not a curable virus. All this being said, have a great evening and party like its 2003! (Its probably already 2003 there so have a Happy and hopefully Healthy New Year!) jerry
Guest guest
Gill, it looks doubtful that you are going to get it if indeed, you have not gotten it so far. Somewhere, you must have had the chicken pox, or else you have a strong resistance against the virus. Good luck! However, after to listening to how medical conditions are over there, I wonder if I should come over. My husband gave me a wonderful gift of going to England this next year, and I can't wait, but worry about if I should become ill whilst over there. Guest guest
hi lisa, there is a programme on discovery channel over here called the real ER. is it, as it says, filmed at one of your hospitals in chicago. if it is and you are ever there, just wave and i am sure i will eventually get to see it, its on most nights. also. is it normal to wake up then make a coffee and be so tired i have to go back to bed then carry on like this for a few days. other days i can manage with just an hour during the day, when amys at school. but its making life very hard when shes on holiday. shes not old enough to look after herself. is there any other way of handling this. thanks love anita (the witch) > > From: " lisa m skowron " <lsmaxfax@...> > Date: Wed 01/Jan/2003 15:03 GMT > < > > Subject: RE: Re: [ ] HI ALL > > I would love too!! > > > > Re: [ ] HI ALL > > > > > > Gill, it looks doubtful that you are going to get it if indeed, you > > have not > > > gotten it so far. Guest guest
Dear Anita, I think that show was filmed at Cook County Hospital, which is being torn down and replaced with a more modern hospital. People are up in arms as it had beautiful architecture. But it was so old and in my view, pretty run down. I worked at the Hines VA hospital next door, doing medical research about 10 years ago. Cook County was the hospital of choice for the residents who wanted to " see it all " . And they weren't disappointed! My friend, Camille Rhea was filmed for a part in the movie " The Fugitive " there. She was the prosthetist painting an artificial hand in the Prosthetics Dept. We were in the medical art program together at U of I. I would love to wave from there to you but I will be standing on a pile of rubble! Sometimes I am tired for days too, but I just rest a lot. Other days I'm bouncing around. Are you getting enough nutrition? Light exercise? Guest guest
hi lisa, shame they are or have demolished the hospital. they have done exactly the same thing to our local hospital. it used to be a workhouse, then during the war the german prisoners worked there. when they said they were closing it they assured us that our other 2 hospitals could more than cope with the extra patients. not that you can get to either of the other hospitals from where i live. anyway, they have just announced that the other hospitals cant cope (surprise, we could have told them that) and now they are thinking of re-opening the old hosp. at a cost of millions. typical nhs and the british government. whats it like in chicago, do you have an outdoor iceskating park. manchester is pretty boring, unless your into shootings, muggings etc. i tend to stay at home after 5pm. anyway, time to put my darling little devil to bed. speak to you soon. love anita > > From: " lisa m skowron " <lsmaxfax@...> > Date: Wed 01/Jan/2003 20:02 GMT > < > > Subject: RE: Re: [ ] HI ALL > > Dear Anita, > > I think that show was filmed at Cook County Hospital, which is being > torn down and replaced with a more modern hospital. Guest guest
Dear Anita, Oh yes, downtown Chicago, in the middle of the hustle and bustle is a huge outdoor skating rink! It is next to Marshall Fields, a well known department store. From the restaurant in the store, The Walnut Room, you have a perfect view of the skaters down below spinning around! I live out in the country in Lake Zurich, but love going downtown to look at the store windows decorated for Christmas! Cook County Hospital really needed to go, it was too small and old. Goodnight and take care! Re: [ ] HI ALL > > > > > > > > Gill, it looks doubtful that you are going to get it if indeed, > you > > > have not > > > > gotten it so far.
