Guest guest
I was watching the Today show this morning and Meredith was interviewing a lady who had MS and was not walking very good. Her neurologist put her on Ampyra. She started walking again. I guess it doesn't work for everyone. Meredith's husband has progressive MS as this lady did too, and it did nothing for him. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this medicine and if they did, did it helped them? I have an appointment coming up in June with my neurologist, if there are more pros then cons I think I might consider it. I have progressive MS too. Also what are the side effects and has anyone experienced any of them?
Guest guest
I have Secondary Progressive MS. I take LDN, and eat a diet base on my personal food sensitivities. I take vitamin D3, garlic, calcium, and B12 daily, and ginko, ginseng, and magnesium as needed. These measures have reversed my symptoms and stopped disease progression. Guest guest
 Hi, I do know that if you have certain retinal issues and/or seizures (past /current), you should not take this medicine at all or a lesser dosage. I know many are excited about this drug, it took along time to get it on the market but it is only a symptomatic drug...one of the first, granted but as you pointed out already, it doesn't work for all and it doesn't come without possible side effects. If you don't fall into the risk groups, it may be worth a shot....let us know how it goes. Guest guest
Yes. There are a few that I know through Facebook who are taking it. They are yet to say how they are improving. I had looked up possible side effects before it was released and had already decided against taking it due to its previous useage and the drug's possible side effects. Hope that helps! Guest guest
Ampyra is an improved form of 4-amino-pyridine which is and has been available through compounding pharmacies for years. The delivery and shelf-life/stability are supposed to be much improved but it is way more expensive. 4 amino-pyridine is a potassium channel blocker. It facilitates communication along damages nerves. It has been used by spinal cord injury patients for years. There is a risk of seizures and the dosage is very important. MS patients often have a greater risk of seizures so this is doubly important for us. (spinal code patients take up to 60mg/day but the ampyra dose is 20m, 2x/day and I don't know of any msers taking more than 30mg of 4AP/day--and that was to treat a flare--it just isn't worth the risk of seizures) I have been taking compounded slow release 4AP for 2 years now and it does give me more muscle strength. I can tell when it wears off, I just don't move as well. It also has helped with fatigue and mental alertness. Friends that have been able to switch from 4AP to Ampyra say that it really is significantly better but I do not have insurance that will pay for it, so I'm glad that 4AP is an option. Initially, many people report some trouble sleeping---maybe that is the increased energy and alertness in overdrive until the body gets used to it. > > I was watching the Today show this morning and Meredith was interviewing a lady who had MS and was not walking very good.
