Sorry, I meant to say that I'm taking NSAID's for a few days. I'm having issue

with my stomach, so I won't be able to tolerate them much longer than that.

RA in the Jaw

Lucky me, I think that RA is starting to effect the ligaments in my jaw. Has

anybody else ever gone through this before? I feel like I've been hit in the

side of my head with a baseball bat. I even went to the dentist yesterday to

make sure I didn't have some kind of infection or possibly wisdom teeth, but he

said it was my ligament (stylomandibular). I'm taking N's for a few days and if

it's not better by Monday, I have to call. Has anyone ever has a steroid shot

in their face before?

Poor thing.  I've had inflammation there and you're right, it feels just like

someone punched you.  I remember that I couldn't even sleep on that side.  I did

take a lot of NSAIDs and prednisone to get through it.  I also ate soft foods

like meatloaf and potatoes that didn't need a lot of chewing.  No one mentioned

a steriod injection, but that certainly sounds reasonable if they'd do it.  It

also helped to take Tylenol about an hour before I had to get up, so the pain

would be a bit better first thing in the morning.  Feel better!!

Thanks so much for the ideas Kate! I think that prednisone is going to be my

next step. The NSAID's don't seem to be doing much and they really upset my

stomach.

Yes, it's h e double hockey sticks. I've had steroid shots- it helped. At

first it felt worse but a few weeks later I was glad I had it done. I have TMJ

and have had several surgeries which has not helped. But the arthritis in my

jaw is horrendous and your post caught my eye because the pain is horrendous

today and is in my shoulders, head and back too.

I'm sorry for your pain.

Sorry to hear that, Lori. That sounds extremely uncomfortable.

I hope you'll improve soon.

I had it in my jaw joint.  It affected my speech and my eating.  I remember

losing 7 lbs.  My doctor did warn me that the jaw joint itself is very tiny and

only a few injections could destroy the joint and then you would have major

problems.  So I didn't have it and would recommend that you think seriously

about it.  I decided to forego it.

Thanks for the info Joyce. For right now, I'm starting back on oral prednisone,

so I'm hoping that will help me through the flare. My dentist did say that they

can do injections that would numb the ligament, but I'm not sure if it carries

the same risk, and it would have to be done at a special dentists office. RA is

certainly the gift that keeps on giving.

Hi Lori,

Yup...RA in the jaw, not the steroid in the face. As my RA ventured

into new and exciting joints to miserate(?) me, one that I certainly

didn't care for was the jaw. Strange how it happened too. First, it

hit my left side and I could hardly chew or swallow for about two

days, then that disappeared. Then about a day after that, it hit my

right side for the same length of time and also disappeared, almost

like it was " checking out the scenery " from that vantage point. It

must not have liked what my jaw offered because it never returned

there, preferring the more temporate climate of my hands and wrists.

**An interesting note... I took alot of fish oil daily since I was

first diagnosed (a year ago in Nov.) and would have good days and bad

days. I went off of it about three weeks ago, mostly out of

forgetfulness at first, and then noticed that I had no pain. For a

good three weeks - no pain - can you believe it?! I certainly could

tell it was still there, but it didn't pain me. Not sure why this

would be except that I was also sick (sinus infection) so perhaps my

immune system was suppressed during that time. I do have pains again

but currently not nearly as bad as they have been. Don't know if

fish oil was a contributing factor or what, but I still take a non-

iron multivitamin, calcium, and ibuprofen daily and exercise my hands

alot. Still no DMARDS for me. I'll be really interested in my RA

factor in March as well as all the other numbers.
