Hi PJ,

I'm new to the group and have been lurking.  Will introduce myself in a

minute.  I did the no caffeine, no dairy, no wheat, no sugar diet about a year

ago.  Now I already was no caffeine for 20 yrs, and low white flour, white

sugar for 3 or 4, so thought it would be a snap.  Oh and my naturopath also

had me do no red meat.  I lasted 3 weeks on the diet.  I quit for 2 reasons.

I have trouble w/my appetite to begin with.  After a while on this diet, there

was nothing that appealed to me and so I just would skip meals.  I lost 10 lbs

in 3 weeks, which may not seem like a lot, but I started out at 115 lbs and I am

5'7 " .  I could not afford to loose anymore weight.  I had lost those 10 lbs 7

years earlier and it took me 7 long years to put them back on.  To loose them

in 3 weeks was depressing.   And I was battling depression to begin with so

this was making me worse.

The second reason I quit the diet is because after all that suffering, it

didn't make one bit of difference for me!  If anything the RA was worse.

Intro to follow.

Subject: [ ] Has anyone found resukts with anti-flamatory diet?

Date: Thursday, March 18, 2010, 10:29 PM

Hi,

I am new to the group. I have had RA since my teenage years. Didn't go heavy

into meds until my late 20's.

I have reached the point to do infusions. I have done every med out there.

Luckily my joint damage is minimal.

I have been looking at the results on the internet of some people using an

anti-inflamatory Dite.

No caffeine, no dairy, no wheat, no sugar and all I can think is no way.

Any thoughts on this thought provoking change in diet?

Looking forward to the support.

Hi PJ -

I have been in this group only since November when I was initially diagnosed

with erosive RA. I was very leery of the medication that I was told I " had to "

take. My father has RA and last year his immune system was so compromised that

he almost died from a virus he couldn't get rid of. I went to a Holistic M.D.

(yes, an actual M.D.) who had me do an elimination diet (not so hard to do).

Well, all I can say is that several months ago, before I started this " diet " I

was walking with a limp (I am 40 years old) and had severe pain in my joints as

well as a rash for the last year, which no one could diagnose. The Holistic M.D.

stated this diet was to show that there could be a type of allergic inflammation

linked to RA. Well, low and behold, I was on this diet for 2-1/2 months

straight. My rash went away, my pain went away, I no longer limp, and am going

to do my first 5k in a couple of weeks. If you are interested, feel free to

e-mail me, and I will give you the specifics on the diet. The reason that I can

really tell that it works is that I have TOTALLY slacked off of the diet, and

the rash does come back as well as some pain! It is hopeful for me, although I

don't know if the damage still occurs or not without pain - some say it does,

some say it doesn't! It would be hopeful though to know that possibly you can

help yourself tremendously by just some " simple " diet changes! Donna Ruzich

Thanks so much for your support.

I would be very interested in the diet that you have been following.

I am skeptical. NO! I don't want to feel deprived. I love my whole grains and

caffeine.

But, I should just get off the pity pot and give it a try!

What have I got to lose. There is always room for another 10 pounds to lose.

Give me an e--mail at warrenisewit@...

Hope you have a great week. So jealous to here you can run. Stay healthy.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Sounds like you were already a good

eater.

I am going to try following the diet and see if I get some results. I have to

admit I am spoiled eater. I love whole grains, some sugar and my caffeine. But

some energy and pain relief would be great!!!

We live on a farm and have fresh eggs, grass fed beef, home grown pork and lamb.

We have a huge garden and eat very well out of it.

I'm so sorry that you have had to fight RA for such a long time. I suppose the

disease makes us stronger people and there is a lesson living with it daily.

I truly believe that exercise and rest are the 2 most important things we do

daily.

Missing my double fiber bread already!

Koala2u,

This is my first post - I, too, would like to hear more about the

elimination diet. I was diagnosed Sept/Oct 09 with RA and am taking

methotrexate. Before I started taking it I felt disabled, feet & ankles

hurting, walking down stairs at home like an elderly person (I am 48),

my hands swollen and hurting. Since taking MTX I have felt like my old

self. No side effects.
