I used to do Astanga Yoga in the late 80's. Kept me fit, but I've gotten too

impatient for it now. Didn't notice any effect on car sickness or

overstimulation, but great if it works for you!

Inger

Yoga

I was wondering if anyone else practices yoga? Don't get me wrong, all

I do is follow along with a DVD, but it has really helped me with car

sickness and dealing with overstimulation in public places. Has anyone

else given it a try? If so, what do you think?

If you want to talk about a yoga workout moving fast then try MTV Power Yoga, it moves really fast. When I first got this workout it aggravated me, but then I just went at my own pace and it worked out much better.

Hi Donna,

I'll have to check that one out, thanks!

The speed of that one intimidated me just because I didn't think I could keep up. My class this morning meanwhile moved a little faster on some poses than she usually does too and I found that I liked going slower better so I can see what you mean about getting more out of it that way.

Thanks!!

Which Yoga workouts are your favorite?

Hi Kim,

I have so many favorites, but if you like The Firm Power Yoga then you might like Crunch Joy Of Yoga, 10 Minute Solution Yoga, or Quick Fix Yoga. Those are all great ones. If I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be my DVD set of Yoga For Happiness DVD. I only do the shorter workouts of this series, but I love the flowing yoga and the great stretching.

You can go to Collage.com and type in "yoga" and it will give you a list of yoga workouts and you can even preview them there.

hiya! i know what you mean. after you do the swan dive (this is

the bend from the hips with the back held straight), do not keep

your hands on the floor for the 'look up' part ... put your hands on

your calves, or on your knees, or even on your thighs -- whichever

is most comfortable for you. always modify the moves to suit your

own level of fitness/flexibility.

it is perfectly ok if you cant put your hands on the floor with a

straight back....that is just something that you are to work up to

doing. same thing with head to knee, or straight legs for a

stretch. get your head as close to your knee (or not) as you feel

is right... bend your knees instead of keeping them straight if you

need to.

keep working on these things and you will be amazed at how quickly

flexibility will improve.

you are doing a good thing by trying yoga videos, keep it up!

This was a really good description Carolyn! I've had the same kind of confusion/frustration with this part of the sun salutation. Thanks!!

Hi !

Thanks for the info about On the Ball Yoga Workout for Beginners, it sounds great! I know what you mean too about those push-ups and half push-ups, they are killers. The ladies here suggested to me modifying by putting my knees down and so most of the time I'm doing that right now. The modifications help me focus more on the pose and its affect on my body and mind and not just on the athletics of trying to get it "right." The more we do things like this, the stronger we'll get and eventually we'll be able to do the full pose and enjoy it. Your dinner sounds wonderful! I went to a local farmer's market yesterday and got some potatoes and summer squash. We had some of the potatoes yesterday, I'm still trying to decide what to do with the squash. I'm going back next week for sweet corn and other stuff! YUM!

Hi everyone. Friday and Saturday morning I walked with my husband (32 mins, and 40 mins), and Friday afternoon I tried out On The Ball Yoga Workout forBeginners. I didn't have time to finish it, but I loved it! I could doposes with the ball that I cannot do normally. There's a series of treeposes holding the ball overhead that made my arms shake! And then she goesinto blown palm (that was new to me) - a side bend in tree, still holdingthe ball, of course. Wow.Today I took a break from walking, to let my blister heal. I did BaronBaptiste's Power Yoga and it was cardio; at least most of what I did was. Ididn't finish the workout, but put 40 mins in. Whew! You just don't stopmoving! I so suck at push-ups, and there were MANY in this workout. And HALFones - lower yourself down until you are hovering above the ground - I don'tTHINK so! LOL The two women on the dvd were so strong. I'd like to be thatstrong. It's really hot and humid here today. I think we are going to pile into thevan and go get some farm fresh corn on the cob and baby potatoes for suppertonight. Dh will cook some meat on the bbq and we'll have a salad, too.Too hot to cook inside! I don't eat much meat, but there's plenty ofveggies to fill up my plate. Hi Sandy,

The yoga DVD I purchased last year works well for me. It can be done " right

where you are " , which means from a chair and not on the floor if you choose.

It's called " Sitting Fit Anytime " by Winter Ward, teacher & author.l

I know there are other very good ones out there also.

hope this helps

Cheri,

started doing Yoga when she was about 15 yrs old. She also started Palates too. She said that both helped her. So I would say yes. Try it for a week and see how she does. I never got into the Yoga but the Palates was one I got into. Even 's Rhuemy said Palates and Yoga is good for kid's with JA.

Hey there

I'm an achon at 4'0 and i've been doing for a while. There are going

to be some positions that " we " might not be able to do fully but those

are less than the ones you can do. It's very relaxing. I'm doing

Jazzercise and what they do is first 10 min is warm up easy then 35min

of routine exercise/dance which is fun and easy then the last 15-20min

of yoga for cool down . I love to dance and yoga and you get the best

of both. Jazzercise is all over the U.S.

I have tried yoga stretching exercises to mainly try to help the flexibility

and mobility of my hips. For me it has worked wonders - last time I went to

the doctor about my hips he suggested a hip replacement. The exercises help

strengthen your muscles but it is done in such a way that you do not have to

hurt yourself to get results. I noticed results within a week or 2 after I

have done them consistently at least one time a day. When I remember (I

know, I'm bad) I also take the glucosamine-condroiten (sp??) pills...they

help supplement the work I'm doing and I'm in a LOT less pain when I keep up

with these things and can stand taller. It's a great thing for anyone to

try - whether or not you have physical problems or not. :)

I have been doing them on and off, and when I forget to do them, my body

definitely lets me know!

I hope this helps a little!

I have to second the mention of Jazzercise. They also are beginning

to offer low-impact classes which is good for those with bad joints.

I haven't been to a class in a while because of the high-impact

jumps... but it's a blast, and you build community. I've been

attending a Tai Chi class since Christmas.. and thats really good.

The national arthritis foundation endorses it.

I agree that Yoga works wonders! It helps me center and refocus. It

also can be a fat burning exercise as well- yoga for weightloss. That

was how I primarily lost the first 10lbs, was by doing one of the

Biggest Loser DVD's called Weightloss Yoga. Now since the weather us

nice out I do outdoor activities. I always do some yoga once a week

though. Very refreshing!

Has anyone tried Yoga. If so any thoughts on the best. I have done research so I

am thinking the restorative. Anybody have a great Yoga CD they can recommend. My

doc thinks it will help me. I think more mentally than physically although we

are hoping for both.

You are all the best :)
