Guest guest
Hi -thanks for the welcome and I am glad to hear you are doing better. I am really interested in the long term for the myotomy....I think the outcome is different on people who have had dilations prior to myotomy as opposed to just straight myotomy w/out any other procedures...it seems to me that the dilation does a number on the muscle and is not as successful in relief of symptoms...just what I am picking up reading about everyone's history and stuff...what do you think? Guest guest
Dear Selena, I had a dilatation in 2002 years ago, had immediate relief, but the symptoms came back about a year later. I had VATS myotomy 2004, no wrap, no reflux, and no medication and I'm doing really well. I think the success of any procedure is aided by treatment sooner rather than later. The skill of the surgeon or gi is most important. IMHO getting to the most experienced doctor is more important than whether to wrap or not wrap. Guest guest
Hi Sandy Is a VATS myotomy the same as the Heller myotomy? Thanks for sharing your story-I hope to God the symptoms don't come back for my daughter or anyone suffering with achalasia-It's hard to tell an 8 year old that she shouldn't be eating chicken fingers or french fries or chocolate...I am trying to get her to follow the diet for those who have had the Nissen fundiplication-I figure if I can get her on a more sensible relfux preventive diet while she is young-it will be second nature for the rest of her life?!? yea right, wishful thinking, but I am going to try. I have a friend ironically enough who had the Nissen Fundiplication to treat her GERD over 5 years ago now and she is still suffering....well she is also overweight, smokes and eats whatever she wants and drinks....I'm hoping with a little work on maintaining a healthy lifestyle my daughter will do ok....I have also heard that high sodium in one's diet has a direct correllation to GERD/reflux...anyone hear that one before? best of luck to you Sandy S
Guest guest
Thats great - a more healthy diet anyway - will help her in the long run. > Hi Sandy > Is a VATS myotomy the same as the Heller myotomy? Guest guest
Hi Selena, I have been on a low sodium diet for most of my life - my parents had high blood pressure and it became a way of life ................ however I also had reflux years later and I still had little sodium in my diet ................ so there are as many 'fors' as there are 'against' in out little world. We are all so different. I really wonder where they get their recommendations from and it they made sure they were true before they used them or just repeated what someone else had said before. I eat lots of dark chocolate as well ! What is your daughter's name or have I missed it ? Hugs, Joan Re: Selena > Hi Sandy > Is a VATS myotomy the same as the Heller myotomy? Guest guest
Hi Joan I heard it on the news in one of those " a recent study shows... " blurbs on a health segment and also I think Prevention magazine had something on the whole low sodium thing. I think it all needs to be taken with a grain of salt(haha) cuz there will be a contradictory study in a month anyway....as usual I think it all comes down to moderation with everything...my daughter's name is Jane and she will turn 9 in August. She went back to school today-so far so good..sorry to hear you have reflux..I had heartburn in the latter part of my pregnancies but normally I don't have much of anything....thank God. cuz when I did have it it was aweful! I was burping up everything- even water-but then again I had a 9lb.baby inside me with their feet in my ribs.....I would not wish any G.I. problems on anyone-cuz they suck and the tests suck even worse to find out what exactly you have....anyway I ramble- thanks for the input-take care S > Hi Selena, > I have been on a low sodium diet for most of my life - my parents had high > blood pressure and it became a way of life ................ however I also > had reflux years later and I still had little sodium in my diet > ............... so there are as many 'fors' as there are 'against' in out > little world. Guest guest
Hi Selina, I so glad that Jane went back to school today. Kids are truly amazing the way they cope with things. I heartily agree with you about moderation in all things ! Look at the way the various things have been promoted for this and that and then a few months later something else is the 'flavour of the month'. I find it frightening when I now read about all the herbal things which can interact with medication and actually cause you to become very ill - and it is all 'natural'! Hugs, Joan Re: Selena > Hi Joan > I heard it on the news in one of those " a recent study shows... Guest guest
Check your area for Freecycle.com. Most cities of any size have one. Also Craiglist.com has a free section and a 'wanted' section. I have used both and given items to both. I have had nothing but positive experiences.
