Guest guest
Dalane, Arava can cause high BP too. I have always had low BP in fact. Went on arava and bp started a slow but steady climb. It was helping the joints but I'm so tired all the time now that I did not want another med (BP med) that would make me more tired so I stopped the arava. BP started coming back down-took it several months to get down to my usual 96/50. I am also quite overweight. If you never had hypertension before meds  it is probably one of the meds but if you were on orencia for a year or so before the high bp started and if it did not start climbing until after you started arava I would suspect it. Good luck with a new doc and getting to right drug combo. linda From: Dalanne <tombstone1968@...> Subject: [ ] Orencia, high blood pressure & a washout procedure Date: Sunday, April 4, 2010, 11:00 PM  Background: I have been on Orencia for 1.5 years now. As time has gone on my blood pressure has slowly risen. Yeah, I'm overweight but who isn't? Besides, I am also on Arava & sulfasalazine. Since going on those two I have been slowly but steadily losing weight (abt 1 pound per week average) due to an increase in, shall we say, dropping deuces more often. Too much info, I know. Back to the blood pressure thing. It has risen to the point that I was forced to go on BP medication. I live in the flippin' bathroom now. If I'm not doin' #1 then it's time for #2. Being on the BP med has me worn out much more than normal and I want off this garbage. My rheumy, who just left his practice in Terre Haute to move to Cali, has repeatedly told me that my BP is rising due to the Orencia. OK. I don't think it is helping me anyway. As a matter of fact I didn't start feeling better until he added the sulfasalazine with the Arava. Getting closer to my question now....I know I need to talk with my new Rheumy whom I've heard is a really good guy but that appt is 2 months out. I want to go off the Orencia for good. I'd rather have more pain to cope with than high blood pressure & it's effects on my body. Knowing all this, I've been told that quitting Orencia will require a " washout procedure " . I have looked on the web but would appreciate any knowledge you folks may have on this. What does such a procedure entail, how long does it take, what are the effects of it on the body, that type of thing. Dalanne the dump truck driver Mushrooms in East Central Illinois! Guest guest
Dalanne, I've had Crohn's since 1976, but I have to say that drugs for sure can result in frequent stools. I never know exactly what is causing it -- hyperthyroid? Crohn's flare? New drug? I started taking a statin for cholesterol and an anti-thyroid recently and I'm back in the bathroom again. Now I've stopped taking both and am waiting for my intestines to slow down again. it was the best when I was just on Remicade and Imuran (both drugs for Crohn's) Kind of wish I got the weight loss though. i hope you find a solution. I sure understand the problem. dd

Guest guest
when changing from orencia to remicade about 2 weeks ago, I had an infusion of orencia in february then decided it wasn't working so a month later I started remicade with no wash out period at all. I hope this helps some, the remicade seems to be doing better for me except for the high blood pressure during the time I get the infusion. after I'm done getting it, my blood pressure goes back to normal. in land [ ] Orencia, high blood pressure & a washout procedure Background: I have been on Orencia for 1.5 years now. Guest guest
Dalanne, I was on Orencia for about 6 months & had to stop due to chronic infections (bummer since it actually was working for me!) There was no washout procedure. My Rheumy wanted to try Arava next - the pamphlet that came with that drug said it could stay in your system for up to 2 years & that if you stop, there is a washout procedure you can do to get rid of it (this is for the Arava, not the Orencia) Maybe that is what they were referring too? Don't know what it entails. Good Luck! > > Background: I have been on Orencia for 1.5 years now. As time has gone on my blood pressure has slowly risen. Yeah, I'm overweight but who isn't? Guest guest
Sorry I don't know about the Orencia but I do know that Arava has raised my blood pressure. They dropped my dosage of Arava because it was lowering my white blood cell count too much so now I take 10mg instead of 20mg and my blood pressure has gone back to almost normal. Just something to look into and hope it helps. > > Background: I have been on Orencia for 1.5 years now. As time has gone on my blood pressure has slowly risen. Yeah, I'm overweight but who isn't? Guest guest
If it is a washout for Arava, I did it six years ago in order to have another child. The washout was easy - you just mix cholestrymine (sp?) powder (a prescription) with a drink (water or juice), and drink it two or three times a day, I can't remember, for about two weeks. I had a special blood test then, to make sure it was out of my system. Patty
Guest guest
Thanks, everybody. No, I don't have Crones. It is Irritable Bowel and I know which foods trigger it but it is hard to avoid those triggers. I will admit it may be the Arava that is making it worse in the past few months. Prior to 6 months ago, which is when I started the Arava oddly, my blood pressure was regular as it had always been- at roughly 110 over 70. Arava: my dosage was dropped 2 months ago from 20 down to 10mg. I would have expected my BP to improve if it were the culprit. Parikh is the one that left. Poor Dr Lenardo is swamped now with both Parihk's and his own patients. I can't get in to talk about the Orencia and blood pressure problems until early June. I'm comfortable there, though. As for frequent infections I may have to quit the Orencia due to that as well. I have had a series of belly skin infections involving a bacteria that is resistant to one particular antibiotic (that I've never been on) and I think a couple more of them are getting started again. While those little infections are getting healed up I'll have to stop the Arava and Orencia. It takes SO long to heal that I may get an answer to the bp problem by not taking either of them for a couple of months. My weight loss is from one or more of the meds: I get that queazy feeling frequently while I'm eating. I usually eat way too much anyway so my meals have pared themselves down to a more realistic amount of calories. My weight loss is very slow but steady because I'm taking in about half the food I used to eat. I eat when I'm stressed or worried and I'm shattering that very very bad habit. Thanks for the heads up on the Arava washout, too. I'm feeling a little more confident about what may/will be happening in the next few months now. Thanks ladies! By the way: I survived my first days back at work with only the side effect of being extremely tired when I got home. I LOVE my driving gloves and darvoset! Guest guest
With the arava it may take awhile for your bp to go down if arava is the cause. I stopped it completely and it was about 3 months before it got completely back to normal. linda From: Dalanne <tombstone1968@...> Subject: [ ] Re: Orencia, high blood pressure & a washout procedure Date: Thursday, April 8, 2010, 3:34 PM  Thanks, everybody.
