Clinician living in Southwestern Indiana - the coal-burning power plant capitol of the world. In Indiana we also produce much of the world's food, with our top five agricultural crops being wheat, corn, soy, dairy and eggs.In our work with children with autism, we order and review many functional medicine laboratory tests, among them food allergy, hair analysis, and urine and fecal metals tests. The data is clear: The toxins in autistic children in southwestern Indiana are the same toxins that are being spewed into our environment from the coal burning power plants: arsenic, antimony, bismuth, cadmium, tin, lead, mercury, and aluminum. What's going into our air is going into our children and it's poisoning them. There is NO SUCH THING AS CLEAN COAL.Second, the foods these children are most often reactive to are the foods that are grown in the midwest and consumed by American children and other children the world over. Foods that are grown in polluted soil or which come from animals that are fed corn that is grown in soil polluted with heavy metals and pesticides .Please - stop the advancement of new coal burning power plants. We can't afford the cost of coal on our society. If the rate of autism continues at the rate seen between 1995 and 2005, the incidence in American children is expected to be 1 in 9 by 2015. The current estimated cost of caring for one person with autism across the lifespan is $3 million. WE CAN'T AFFORD COAL! Please make renewable energy sources a priority in your administration. And, please, establish a general fund and require those businesses that continue to profit from the poisoning of our children to contribute and help families pay to recover their children through effective biomedical treatments.
