Guest guest
Hi All, We've used acupuncture, but not for pain, but to rebalance (correct the reverse in polarity which occurs after serious illness) the body systems. (I believe the AMA only recognizes acupuncture for pain, but we've found it does MUCH more!). It's doing wonders for the acne. We are treating with a traditional Chinese doc - there is a BIG difference in training; chiropractors receive 6-8 wks of training in acupuncture, more of an intro, from what they themselves have told me; whereas one who is a traditional Chinese doc studies for YEARS how to rebalance the body systems. It is quite a complex and wonderful form of medicine! (VBG!) THe doc has us using an herbal tonic (one spoon in warm water) to help build the blood (anemia); and margarite acne pills, which (according to package inserts) are effective to clear heat (pharmaceutical drugs & other toxins); purify blood, etc. I am NOT a doc, nurse or other health care practitioner - just sharing what worked for us! (IF anyone would like a referral, I can ask our doc if he knows of anyone in whatever area you're in - just email me.) The doc we have trained in China for years. I was reading some info on acupuncture in his office - apparently several thousand years ago, the " docs " of the day noticed that when soldiers would come back from battle with sword wounds in certain areas, other physical complaints would lessen or disappear & this is how acupuncture came to be studied as a form of healing. Hope this is helpful! Blessings, Chris PS - I guess what I've been trying to say here is that one of the main functions of acupuncture is to return the body of homeostasis, or healthful balance in its operation. As the body runs on electricity, this has apparently proven for several thousand years to be an effective modality in regulating and balancing the body's energy systems. (Our doc told us it's best not to eat a heavy meal for a few hrs after treatment; rest up afterwards, as the body is trying to heal itself & it needs rest to do so; no fried foods (stir fry, of course, is good - no deep fried foods); no spicy foods.) I'm sure there must be some very good info on net about all the benefits of acupuncture. One excellent college I know of is the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (CA). Perhaps those of you who are interested can check it out! > No it did not hurt at all! > Re: [ ] acupuncture > > > > > > Hi, > > Has anyone tried acupuncture for pain/or and fatigue? Guest guest
Hi Coleen, Our Chinese doc told us that when that occurs (the slight sting) its due to an excess of electrical energy in a particular meredian. He went on to clarify that in any given patient that one body system may be low on energy, while another is overloaded; this is one of the ways of balancing - the docs can calm down one system which may be in an " alarm " state, while gently nudging another to work up to its potential. Sorry I can't explain better. I did read an excellent book, though - (cheap too!) " Reclaiming the Body's Wisdom " by Hill. It explains in laymens' terms what the Chinese systems are & how different body systems affect different parts of the body. Some of it is the same - even Western docs seem to know that when you have liver problems, it shows up in the eyes (yellowing of eye whites, etc.). I found this book for $2 on clearance on Boarders Books. Hope this is helpful! Blessings, Chris > > > No it did not hurt at all! > > Re: [ ] acupuncture > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > Has anyone tried acupuncture for pain/or and fatigue? Guest guest
I used it for my shoulder when it was really bad and it definitely helped. It takes a few treatments before it works. [ ] Acupuncture Has anyone ever used a licensed acupuncturist for PA or fibro? I was reading up on it and the Chinese have used it for thousands of years. I read that it worked well on fibromyalgia and for controlling pain. I had a friend use it for weight loss before and to quit smoking and he swore by it. I know that surgery has been performed before using accupuncture as anesthesia so I think there is some accreditation to it. My insurance covers licensed practioners (with a higher co-pay). Please let me know if any of you have had any experiences with it before (good, bad, indifferent). I figure that it can't hurt. thanks,
Guest guest
I used acupuncture for achillies tendonitis after the podiatrist was unable to give me relief after months of cortisone injections and taping. She decided it was PA-related and opted not to treat me anymore. It took 9 visits total to the acupuncturist. I had significant relief after the first visit and then slow improvement after that. No pain meds, either. But acupuncture in your heel is really not fun. _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Hi , I did try acupuncture to alleviate some of my pa pain. It had little to no effect. I went twice a week for about 6 weeks. My acupuncturist was highly recommended by a friend and he tried several different acupuncture methods in attempting to relieve my pain. A couple helped relax me, which took off the tense rigidness I had when steeling myself to walk, but all in all, he was dumb founded as to why he wasn't able to help meon a long term basis. My insurance would not cover any cost. Each session was $50. I hope you have better luck.
Guest guest
Hi -- I have been using acupuncture for about two months now with great success. I am on Enbrel, Methotrexate, Celebrex and Ultram, and have had two epidurals this year. The medicine helps, I think the epidurals were useless, and the acupunture is great. Finally, I also use healing meditation -- I am a long time meditator who has recently found some relief through that channel. If anyone would like details of any of the above please write me directly. , North Jersey Highlands raharris@... http://www.wpunj.edu/pa/ http://www.satipatthana.org
Guest guest
Where can I get information on the meditation? I can only take Celebrex. My doctor told me no other medicine while on Celebrex. Guess having a faulty valve is not a plus when it comes to these medications. Also high blood pressure. Am I the only one here that has the BP problem? No one has mentioned it and I know that almost all the medications i have red about in this forum can cause heart problems and with someone with a problem already it is not a good idea to use them. Just wondering.
Guest guest
Hi Sunny, I also have " hypertension " or so they say... I do have high blood pressure, but I believe it is based more in my anxiety disorder than my cardiovascular system ... first of all they can't seem to control it with a beta blocker and a calcium channel blocker (lopressor 50 mg/day and nifedipine XL 90mg/day) plus I take 25 mg/day of Hydroclorothiazide (Hctz) and 80 mg/day of Lasix both of which are water pills. These are supposed to keep my pitting edema (both shins, ankles and feet) at bay. Of Course they don't and my feet, ankle and shins all swell much like then I had preeclampsia with each pregnancy (25 years ago last). And now because they keep me a bit on the dehydrated side with all the water pills, I also have to take 80 meq's/day of Klor-con (potassium).. to fight off the sensation of heart palpitations, shortness of breath (nothing like mimicking my anxiety symptoms to keep things entertaining) And around we go again................. It's just that I am " morbidly obese " so I must have hypertension - or do I... I must have heart disease or do I... cholesterol = 180... that one really confused them. I'm getting very tired of doctor's best guesses.... how about the rest of you????
Guest guest
Accupunture and Chinese medicine are the only things that seem to be helping my liver and general energy levels - I am not sure that it will cure me but it keeps me operational. I do it twice or once a week and it helps alot in SIngapore Acupuncture Hello All, I was interested in in the citation below regarding acupuncture from the article that someone on the list directed as to at Keep Hope Alive. For those of us who have Natural Killer Cell function in the basement, it seems that acupuncture is helpful. The other thing I take it is IP-6, which Beck has found helpful. I get one acupuncture treatment per month at my HMO---rather perfunctory since it is only about 15-20 minutes. However, I also get one private acupuncture treatment per month. My acupuncturist, Noriko Nagato, does the Japanese style acupuncture which is both sides of the body and lasts about an hour. She is quite attentive and willing to learn since she has gone to fibromyalgia conferences to learn more about the disease. She also treats the conductor of the Boston Symphony, Seiju Ozawa as well as the wonderful classical pianist, Mitsuko Uchida. I sometimes think that if I could afford two acupuncture treatments per week that I might be able to return to my teaching job for part-time work. Anyway, the information is below my signature line. Steve Du Pre Webpage: http://www.angelfire.com/jazz/isaiah40soaringeagle/index.html " By words the mind is winged. " Aristophanes Acupuncture increase NK activity and IFN-gamma In studies on mice, electroacupuncture increased Natural Killer cell activity, although it did not increase the quantity of NK cells. Electroacupuncture caused the increase in NK activity by increasing beta-endorphin production and also increased IFN-gamma in the spleen. (1) In a controlled study on 25 cancer patients and 20 controls by Wu B et al, acupuncture given for 30 minutes daily for 10 days increased IL-2 levels and NK cell activity. Pressure points used were ST36, LI11 and RN6. In the placebo group, NK cell activity and IL-2 levels remained below normal and unchanged. Wu concluded: " acupuncture therapy could enhance the cellular immune function of patients with malignant tumors ..providing a beneficial effect in anti-cancer treatment. " (2) Other published articles I've read confirm these findings. For some time, I've heard from our readers reports of increases in CD4 counts with acupuncture. Persons with CFIDS, cancer and HIV would all benefit from acupuncture. Be sure to specifically ask for pressure points ST36, LI11 and RN6. 1. Yu Y et al; J Neuroimmunol 1998 Oct 1;90(2):176 - 2. Guest guest
Hi everyone, Just wanted to caution that there can be unpleasant side effects even with acupuncture and Chinese medicine. I have CFS and fibromyalgia, and have had treatment by three very caring practitioners (a doctor of oriental medicine, a licensed acupuncturist, and an M.D. who does electroacupuncture). In the first case, my fatigue was relieved and sleep improved, but I got hives and thyroid inflammation (it finally turned out the treatment had increased my thyroid function, and my thyroid dose needed to be halved). With the last two acupuncturists, my pain got much worse beginning while the needles were inserted. At the time of the last two acupuncture treatments, I was on cortisone, which eventually had to be stopped because my levels went off the charts. Maybe the acupuncture was improving my own hormone output, and the problems arose because I also was on prescription hormone replacement. But none of the three acupuncturists expected a problem, and they weren't sure what to do other than stopping treatment. Anyway I'd suggest careful monitoring/testing when combining Chinese medicine with rx hormones or hormone-boosting supplements. If anyone else has related experiences, I'd like very much to hear about them... Roxy
Guest guest
Anne, I would be interested in knowing what your uncle means by " gives him pause. " Would you find out for me if you can? The needles don't bother me...they are very small and disposable. There are a few points where they do hurt, but for the most point I don't even feel them. I only go once a week as a rule but recently when my sciatica was extremely flaired up I went a couple times a week for a few weeks. I've never had it suggested to go more than once a week unless you are dealing with an extreme pain. Even when I saw my private oriental doctor who got paid for each visit, he didn't suggest more frequent treatments. Hmmm....wonder what they do in China where it is used consistently.... Tatezi Re: Donna / fatigue/acupuncture Glad your results were so astounding. My only problem with this is the needles involved and my uncle, who is Chinese, says that the frequency of treatment gives him pause. Just a thought. Guest guest
Sure. I'm in Boston at the moment with our son who is about to undergo surgery. A quick link that I can send is to Ellen Highfield: http://www.4healthykids.org/2002/speakers.html I will try to post more, but it may be the end of the week. THere will also be a column on this in the HealingChildren reviews shortly. In addition, the ASK conference (www.4healthykids.org) will have both speakers and a limited-seating workshop (first 20 to register) on the use of accupunture with children with nuerological issues. Sorry for the typos. Have to run. --darien On Sun, 17 Nov 2002 20:20:34 -0800 " e N. Guest guest
I wanted to jump in too to say that we have done accupressure (lot of accupuncturists do not like to do accupuncture on children, but do accupressue instead). It has helped many times to stop a seizure. I give my daughter an accupressure massage any time she is feeling twitchy. I've been doing this for about 4 years with good results. Guest guest
Ellen, Thanks for the info. Fortunately, has been without seizures for about two years now. So, that specific application is not so much of a concern. But, what is it that accupunture, or accupressure does for CP kids? I remember reading about both decades ago for general well-being. But, I am curious as to how it works by affecting the peripheral nervous system thereby stimulating the CNS. What is it doing, and why is it valuable. I believe there is something there, but I can't put my finger on exactly what it is. Thanks! Guest guest
I have had acupuncture done on my kids-- my dd for constipation issues and he did do some on Ethan for sensory issues, but we had to stop seeing him because of the herbs he was pushing on us... Ethan had a bad reaction to being on the herbs. Since then I have read that *some* chinese herbals may be tainted with metals, spec. mercury, so just be cautious and ask lots of questions. But otherwise, the acupuncture itself was not unpleasant for the kids-- very quick and painless. I did not do it enough on Ethan to notice if it helped his sensory issues. It would elicit a bowel movement for Elora. W
Guest guest
EPILEPSY, PARKINSON, AUTISM (5) WHAT IS EPILEPSY? Epilepsy is a desease which defined as paroxysmal and temporary disturbance of brain characterized by loss of consciousness or muscle tic or abnormal sensation, emotion and behaviour. In Accupuncture word, this desease is categorized as 'xian zheng'(epilepsy syndrome) and 'dian xian'(epilepsy). CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS 1. Histories of the family, epileptic attack and encephalopathia. 2. TREATMENTS Usually it takes between 1 to 6 months for recovery by The Tole's teory of medication. (6) WHAT IS ACUTE TOXIC ENCEPHALOPATHY Acute toxic encephalopathy is caused by the abrupt appearance of symptoms and signs of the central nervous system in the course of primary diseases. The reason of the desease is unknown. The disease may be associated with immunoreaction to infection and its toxin invading the brain tissue directly. In Acupuncture, this is called 'jing feng'(infantile convulsion). CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS 1. It may occur at any age, but usually in infants from 1 to 3 years old. The brain damage always follow by the primary disorders within a few days or 1 to 2 weeks after their attack. 2. The diagnosis is usually abrupt with high fever, headache, vomitting, restlessness, convulsion, coma, delayed reaction to light, always come with holotonia, decerebrate rigidity. Some of the patients may have the symptoms of meningeal irritation, increased or reduced of tendon reflex and have cerebellar symptoms, such as ataxia and kinetic tremor. 3. The lab exam shows that cerebrospinal fluid is clear. All are normal only the pressure is high and sometimes there is a slight increase of protein. 4. By fundus exam, Arteriolar spasm, blood stasis of small vein and retinal edema can be observed. TYPES OF SYNDROMES 1. Always seen in the stage of cerebral edema of toxic encephalopathy, in the case of the primary disease, with abrupt high fever, headache, vomitting, restlessness, delirium, drowsiness, convulsions of the limbs, involuntary staring, lockjaw or unconsciousness, deep-red tongue with yellow and dry fur, stiffness of the extremities and neck, either taut and rapid or slippery and rapid pulse. TREATMENTS Usually it takes between 1 to 6 months for recovery by The Tole's teory of medication. (7) PARKINSON Toh is 80 years old and " retired, " he was recommended by his sister who has just recovered from diabetes by Master Leong. as he says -- not my choice, he has Parkinson's disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, which interferes with many daily activities. " Parkinson's disease is caused by a gradual deterioration of nerves in a region of the brain that controls movement. In later stages, there may be some intellectual deterioration and memory loss. Parkinson's slows your reaction time; it makes you stiff, it makes your muscles not react when you tell them to move, " ,the main reason is because of the 'Qi' flow in the brain is disturbed said Master Leong. Toh told that he has spent 30 minutes to reach our centre from the carpark. He feels difficulty in walking and moving, before he can take the first step, he need to concentrate for 4 minutes to control his mind. But even his body doesn't cooperate, his mind is fine. After one month full acupuncture and herbal treatment by Master Leong, Toh is now able to walk and move easily. He is now fully recovered from Parkinson Disease. He have brought a gift to Master Leong, he is so 'suprise' with the consultation of Master Leong, he thought that he won't cure from Parkinson for his life. He also thanks to his sister for recommended him to Master Leong. " Over the 140 years, we have more than 100 success proven record of Parkinson Disease. " said Master Leong. (8) AUTISM Joe is 8 years old an Autistic kid from Korea. Even though Korea recognized acupuncture and Joe's grand father is the top acupuncture physician there,he can't help. Others specialist can not do much. Being a father of an autistic kid,his father has a lot of pressure and looking for answer desperately. There finally came to see our MASTER LEONG through high recommendation from a friend. When he first came into our centre everyone in the premise had a shock from his 'super-hyper active behaviour'.Jumping and screaming all over the place and zero communication and eyes contact. He is in his own world, very scared and frustrated, until he hits himself on the head continous for about 10 mins to 30 mins. Master Leong applied Qi Qong and acupuncture treatment to calmed him down. According to Master Leong it is his brain's Qi is not moving smoothly . He calm down after 30 minutes ,then had another session of Qi Qong and acupuncture after one hour. 3 days of treatment went by and they can see that Joe can respond to instruction from his father and has some eyes contact. They went back to Korea because his father has only 3 days of lift from work, but he book for the second visit that is after six months. He took 6 months of herbal medication home and a list of do's and done's . After 6 months they came for 30 days of treatment. Everday he has 2 session of treatment, that is 60 treatments in total. We can see him improving everday and in the end of the treatment he was about 80% !!! recovered. They have to go home now and promise to come in 12 months time. This time he tooks 12 months of medication with him. The 3th visit comes, he was almost 100% recovered!!! when we see him. Still we give him the same treatment for 30 days. In the end of this trip he is quit confident and normal in most of his activities. They went home with a' 101% HAPPY HEART !!! ' NO MORE MEDICINE, WORRY, STRESS, FRUSTRATION, SLEEPLESS NIGHT. Over the recent years we have cured more than 100's of cases, of cause some of them did not complete their treatment. All of them improved from the day they came, we open up their door and aline them to come out off the enclosed world of their own. Eventhough it may be time and effort consuming, we have to do it once and for all - their life. AUTISM Isolated in worlds of their own, people with autism appear indifferent and remote and are unable to form emotional bonds with others. Although people with this baffling brain disorder can display a wide range of symptoms and disability, many are incapable of understanding other people's thoughts, feelings, and needs. Often, language and intelligence fail to develop fully, making communication and social relationships difficult. Many people with autism engage in repetitive activities, like rocking or banging their heads, or rigidly following familiar patterns in their everyday routines. Some are painfully sensitive to sound, touch, sight, or smell. Children with autism do not follow the typical patterns of child development. In some children, hints of future problems may be apparent from birth. In most cases, the problems become more noticeable as the child slips farther behind other children the same age. Other children start off well enough. But between 18 and 36 months old, they suddenly reject people, act strangely, and lose language and social skills they had already acquired. As a parent, teacher, or caregiver you may know the frustration of trying to communicate and connect with children or adults who have autism. You may feel ignored as they engage in endlessly repetitive behaviors. You may despair at the bizarre ways they express their inner needs. And you may feel sorrow that your hopes and dreams for them may never materialize. But there is help-and hope. Gone are the days when people with autism were isolated, typically sent away to institutions. Today, many youngsters can be helped to attend school with other children. Methods are available to help improve their social, language, and academic skills. Even though more than 60 percent of adults with autism continue to need care throughout their lives, some programs are beginning to demonstrate that with appropriate support, many people with autism can be trained to do meaningful work and participate in the life of the community. Autism is found in every country and region of the world, and in families of all racial, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. Emerging in childhood, it affects about 1 or 2 people in every thousand and is three to four times more common in boys than girls. Girls with the disorder, however, tend to have more severe symptoms and lower intelligence. In addition to loss of personal potential, the cost of health and educational services to those affected exceeds $3 billion each year in US. THE TOLE is dedicated to understanding the workings and interrelationships of the various regions of the brain, and to developing preventive measures and new treatments for disorders like autism that handicap people in school, work, and social relationships and brain damage or vegetable. I'm biased I've been getting acupunture for years, and love it. Moria p.s. for liver you can also try artichoke extract, eating artichoke and beets, low use of drugs/caffiene/pesticides/etc. And you can try milk thistle in different forms if you want to be sure it is the milk thistle itself that is difficult for you. I also (occassionally) use liver/GB cleanse formulas from American Botanical Pharmacy (which definately includes milk thistle!)
