Guest guest
Hello my name is I was told I had RA one year ago and I'm 25 years old. Me and my husband has been up in the air because we want more babies and I have been to two Ra doctors and they keep telling me in like five years and then all they want to tell me is that I need to try the Bio drugs and I just don't feel comfortable yet taking them because I do want to have another baby. Can anyone help me understand Why it would or would'nt be a good Idea to have another baby?????? I know I take my risk of having pain during being prego and then there is a chance where I won't have any pain. I just need to hear from my friends on here because it seems like somedays I go to the drs all they want to do is what they want to do and I want another baby and my dr doesn't understand why? Please help me understand prengnacy and RA together.
Guest guest
Hi ! Chin up! There is much good news in this area. I have an RA baby named Tommy who will be two in June. This group was a marvelous source of support while we grew our famili and juggled RA. I have many thoughts that aren't easy to express tapping on an iPhone but I would encourage you to call OTIS (google OTIS pregnancy) and they can give you a run down on what we know about pg and RA drugs. Some are a big no no like methotrexate but others, like humira and enbrel are thought to be safe in pg and lactation. Your rheumatologist and OB need to work together and be comfortable with your treatment plan. I'd advise getting the RA as stable as possible before conception. Up that folic acid too! But don't worry, plenty of us have great pregnancies, deliveries, and kiddos! Guest guest
Hi everyone, I've made it to a computer and can add a bit more. and , you may have to visit a few rheums and even OBs before you find a team that can help you with family building. I went thru a couple of rheums who didn't want me to stay on Enbrel (a class B drug) and preferred I go up on pred. I had talked to OTIS and read the animal studies as well as the few human observational studies that suggested there may not be harmful effects on the baby from biologics like Enbrel and I was more comfortable staying on Enbrel than going way up on pred. My current rheum may have put it best when she said, " I can't tell you that Enbrel is safe, but neither can I say it's harmful. " I had two children with RA. The first pregnancy, I didn't know I had RA and had scorching DeQuervain's tensynovitis in my hands afterward. The second pg, of course I took Enbrel, and did just great. I was on low dose pred too and I went up to 10mg on my two delivery days (Tommy didn't want to come out on the first day, we had to evict him on day 2 of induction). I registered with OTIS and they flew a ped from San Diego out to examine Tommy when he was 6 mos old. He's going to be followed long term, but I like that he's a datum point for the safety of biologics in pg. So I think you have to read the studies, talk to OTIS, find a good rheumatologist and a good OB and go from there. I was even doing infertility treatment trying to get pg with Tommy and all concerned were very supportive about a woman with RA having a baby. When I miscarried in 2007 my rheumatologist was marvelous and the whole dept supported me trying again. So don't give up ladies! This crummy disease can be a big downer and having babies despite it all can be very empowering! Of course good control pre baby is always a good idea. Try to get those symptoms as quiet as possible before conception. Take lots of folic acid, rest, exercise, get in the water if you can. Pg is generally a quiet time for RA. I did fine both times. After Tommy I had a mild flare but just did a burst of pred and I was fine. For lactation info, check out Dr. Hale who is considered the authority on medications and mother's milk. He has written that enbrel and remicaide are both considered safe for lactating moms as the drug is destroyed by the baby's gut. Feel free to write me with any additional questions, Kate F ________________________________ From: " mbar613909@...
