PML More Common With Lupus Than With Other Rheumatic Conditions

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Dec 15 - Although progressive multifocal

leukoencephalopathy (PML) rarely accompanies rheumatic diseases, when

it does, it seems to occur most often with systemic lupus

erythematosus (SLE), researchers report in the December issue of

Arthritis and Rheumatism.

" PML has been reported in patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic

diseases; such cases have traditionally been ascribed to the

immunosuppressive medications administered to these patients, "

co-author Dr. Eamonn S. Molloy told Reuters Health.

" However, " he added, " the results of the current study suggest that

SLE itself may confer a specific predisposition to PML, relative to

other rheumatic diseases. "
