Chronic fatigue, early trauma linked

By Liz Szabo, USA TODAY

Suffering a trauma could predispose children to chronic fatigue

syndrome as adults, a study shows.

In a report in today's Archives of General Psychiatry, researchers

found that 62% of adults with chronic fatigue had suffered a childhood

trauma — such as neglect, or physical, emotional or sexual abuse — in

comparison with 24% of adults who hadn't experienced trauma.

Chronic fatigue is unexplained exhaustion, aches and pains that last

more than six months, even after getting adequate sleep, says Janet

Squires, director of the Child Advocacy Center at Children's Hospital

of Pittsburgh, who was not involved in the study. Trauma survivors

also have increased risks of obesity, teenage pregnancy, heart disease

and hypertension, she says.
