Typically I go to Walmart, sometimes Target for my supplies shopping but often

times I find that the grocery stores like Kroger or Publix or whatever the big

chain in your area is have their own brand that's even cheaper than if you

bought from wally world, like 32oz h2o2 bottles for a buck each. Places like

CVS or Walgreens often have sales for rubbing alcohol - 16oz for a buck, which

make them cheaper than walmart's everyday pricing. I guess it's all a matter of

luck on them having sales when you need them.

I don't think you can get stronger than 3% in typical stores like

walmart/target. I use 3%.

dilute that to make it safe to use?

Aren't there usage instructions on the bottle? If not, there are plenty of

Holly, the hubby said the mix is ten parts water to one part H202 (he's the mad

scientist of the family). That brings the potency down to about 3 and half

percent.

I use vinegar + peroxide in the bedroom at bedtime, no bites.

I use orange plus + peroxide in the computer room under and around my chair, no bites.

These are both groundbreaking, as I always had to take an extra pair of socks to bed, immediately pull off the ones I wore from shower to bed, and put on the clean ones, and I was unable to wear regular shoes at my computer, could only wear my rubber boots,

but with the orange plus + peroxide in the computer room, no problem at all. I do keep the highly mentholated green container of Gold Bond powder in my shoes at all times, plus my current skin protocol of BP topped with PinkOil + herbal insect repellent + benzalchonium chloride + (since it is my feet) the high dollar Lamisil, which goes a surprisingly long way.

However, what has changed about my feet treatment is the addition of the Benzoyl Peroxide on my skin and peroxide on the floor. Radical improvement.

I may just have to turn everything blonde (peroxide).

Hi Bill, I've got a l-o-n-g way to go but it feels good to make at least some

headway against these demons. Haven't tried it in the environment yet but I'm

really liking how your peroxide/borax/water mix is working on my person. Thanks

again for your great advice!

Guess we are all scared Dave but Anasthetics have improved heaps over the years , I had my op 5 weeks ago and really cant recall any side effects of the anastetic...you are lucky your hearing can be restored I have lost mine in my right ear and have 60% in my left ...this means some career and lifestyle changes but Im up for the challenge now , lifes too short to feel sorry for myself . My doc does this surgery once a month but they need to study many years before they can do it.... guess what Im saying is suck them up mate and thank God C/toma is mostly a benign tumor imagine facing the ordeal of it being malignant , heart goes out to you and thank God Im this side of the surgery coz it is a scary thing ....good luck

Dave,

Try not to be too scared. I had my first surgery 10 months ago at age 42 and had never been put under anesthesia either - they had me kiss my family that was with me under some mistletoe hanging from the ceiling- after that the iv was started and by time we made it to the operating room door (which wasn't far from the mistletoe) my eyes were heavy - they had me scoot over onto the chopping block and I said I'm going out (and I did) - I woke up after surgery groggy and went home a few hours later.

HI Dave:

I am schedule for surgery Aug 27 coming fast and I am scared too. I don't know the extent of the C-toma. I will be seeing the doc soon. Be pro-active with your research and have your questions ready.

Hi beer....

Sorry, I don't know your name. I was dx'd with r/a back in 1983. You're

lucky that now there are so many wonderful treatment options for patients.

Back when I was dx'd..I only received medications for the pain mostly. There

are much betters treatment options now.

When you go in the rheumy he will ask you alot of questions about how

you're feeling, where you hurt, will look over your hands, etc. and will draw

blood. They'll run a lot of tests (I think I gave them about 7 vials but 1

blood draw).

That is what I went thru. I'm sure some people have experienced different,

Hang in there...I hope it isn't r/a but if it is, there is so much support

here and we're all coping pretty wel..there are good and bad days. I have

had r/a for more than 25 yrs and I'm doing okay.

If you have any questions, jot them down to take with you. I think there

is a site with questions to ask...and also more info in the links section of

this site.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Autoimmune disease runs in my family...my

mom and aunt both had it.

Hope you'll get your questions answered and have a good appt. Hang in

there.. we're all here to support you.

Hugs..a

Hi: I hope you don't have RA but if you do, I hope you have a great

Rheumy. On my first appt, my Rheumy drew some fluid from my knee and

tested to see if there were gold flecks in it. If there was, she said

it would be gout. I thought you only got gout in the foot!!! It was

negative, and she took blood for blood work. I was in very bad shape,

so she gave me 2 shots of cortisone, and started me on Predisone right

away. She also started me on Methatrexate pills, MTX. She treated my

RA aggressively from day one. That was 6 years ago.

It has taken me 6 years to find the right " cocktail " of meds. I have

been in a remission since last Oct. I have no pain or suffering at all.

I am amazed by all this. I never ever thought I would see this happen

to me. My feet and ankles were hit the hardest. When I was flaring I

could hardly get out of bed and stand on them.

I have a wonderful Rheumy and she takes wonderful care of me. It is so

important to have the right Rheumy. If you don't like the one you have,

search until you find the right one.

I hope you get the right meds. for you, and a RX for some pain meds.

There is no need to suffer needlessly when there are plenty of pain

relieving meds. out there.

I hope you will feel better soon. Wishing you many pain free days

ahead. You have joined the best group of people anywhere. We will all

be here for you, on good or bad days. You are not alone.

Hugs,

Barbara

Welcome to the group. We are a very supportive group, and I hope you

find some answers here. I hope your doc visit will be a good one. I

find, writing a list of what you want to ask the doctor helps. It's

nerve racking, but you will be ok. When I first visited the rheumy,

they ran lab work, and xray's. They can visually see the damage of RA

too. Keep us posted, I really hope you don't have the disease.

Take care,

Tawny

Hi Shirley,

Honestly we have all been where you are. Scared, anxiety, all kinds of thoughts going through our heads. We questioned are we doing the right thing--what if? But, I never thought about canceling the surgery. What was my choice??????--to be fat and hate who I was. To become more unhealthy???? If I could have done it through diet and exercise that would have happened years ago--but it sure didn't. You have to want it more than the way you are living right now.. This is about taking back the control of your life and starting a whole new life. This is a life changing event that not everyone is lucky enough to be able to do this. You and the rest of us who have had this done or are about to have this done are the lucky ones. The closer you get, I know it becomes difficult. But honestly you are making the RIGHT Choice.

This really is ALL about you and NO one else. I hope that you have support from your family or someone close to you. If not please know that you can count on us. We are real people who have been down your road. There isn't one thing I would change about what I did and I am 64 years old and had the sleeve in Oct 2008. I only wished they had this 30 years ago and I would have had a lot happier life. I love who I am now on the outside as well as on the inside. I love looking at clothes and thinking --YES I can wear that or wow look at that isn't it cute. Go look at some of the photo's on this site and check out some of the before and after pictures. They will inspire you and let you see that yes, you are on the right track and doing the right thing. Keep coming back here everyday and reading these, or ask for help or just say how you are feeling.

Yes, Shirley,

YOU will be OK. It is quite normal to let the mind try to control everything. And you hit the nail on the head "over thinking" We have all thought all kinds of things, just like you are thinking. Keep think how great you are going to look in just 3 or 4 months. I NEVER thought in a year's time I would have lost 93 pounds and have no problem keeping it off. The closer you get to your goal the weight loss does slow down. But, that is something we can all live with. Without a doubt you are on the right track. Make sure you have a doctor to check back in with at home once you get home. Your doctor will be doing your blood work every so often--and you doctor will also start taking you off some of your meds as time goes on. I think after about 3 months my cholesterol dropped 40 points. My doctor was as excited as I was. And just remember we all will say that the 1st 30 days is the hardest to do. It really is about retraining yourself and your brain to eat slowly, tiny bites and lots and lots of chewing. I find I still every now an then start eating too fast and take too big of bits. You will know when you do. These are life long habits that we have to break. You are no stranger to all of this if you have been reading this site. But, when it actually happens to you, you will feel what we are saying. Hug, back to you. I am proud of you for posting your feelings. That is what we are here for to help you!

You are amazing and it is only going to get a whole lot better in a few weeks.

Please stay in touch,

Suzanne

Are you scared of the surgery or of giving up your old eating habits?

Because the surgery is a piece of cake, really. You're in and out in no time

with no difficult recovery. Giving up your old ways of eating may be more scary

than the surgery, but only you can decide that.

Shirley,

My surgery date is also 12/12!

I know how you feel! I've not been able to sleep - over-thinking this!

But...I CANNOT continue being as unhealthy as I am now! I want to be around for my little ones (8,7,7) ...hmmm...my husband as well!

If you want, we can "hook-up" to give each other support while we are there!

I'm actually glad to find someone with the same surgey date!

Hi,

I think it is a great idea that the two of you hook up. Have someone take a picture of both of you together for a "before" and stay in contact with each. There were 3 other people who had surgery when I did and every month we would send E-mails to each other and let each other know how we were doing. We are still great support for each other and still send E-mail and it has been over a year now. I think it is great that you have each other.

Here is a list that I post every so often for people that we as a group put together for people to know what to take when they go have surgery. I hope it helps a little and takes some of the stress off you.

Take care,

Suzanne

Let’s see if I can remember what are important things to bring with you.

1. Gas-X because you will have gas after the surgery and they don't have Gas-X in Mexico. They (the nurses and doctors) will ask you are you passing gas? It is nice to have this on the plane ride home too after the surgery. I bought a box (of 36 tabs) of Gas-X (thin strips) that you just put the strip in your mouth. It tastes good and it is easy to take--no water required—nothing difficult to swallow either.

2. A comfortable bra & panties--nothing very tight (cotton is nice—what ever you like to wear) to wear home on the plane or if you want to wear these items in the hospital. Everyone was pretty relaxed with what they slept in or wore around the hospital. I didn't bring a robe at all--Just T-shirts and comfortable pants. Maybe a sweatshirt because the air conditioner makes it cool sometimes and then there are times when the air conditioner isn’t working that well. Bring some extra T-shirts in case you spill on yourself. My IV came out and I got blood on one of my T-shirts. I just washed it out in the sink and hung it up in the shower to dry.

3. Drawstring pants or pants with elastic waist—nothing tight around the middle section. I had some Nike walking pants and they were very comfortable—or short, or pants you would wear to relax in. I also had some that I wore to sleep in, walk around the hospital in and wore them home on the plane too (a pair for each day you are going to be away from home). Sweatpants work great too. I was there in Oct and so the air conditioning was going and sometimes it was cool at night when I was sleeping--so I brought some warm socks along too. But in some rooms the air conditioning wasn't working so well in their rooms and they were warmer than some of us were. If it is too warm or too cold tell one of the nurses they will help you with anything you need. They are excellent when you need something—don’t be afraid to ask.

4. A heating pad--I was so glad I had mine (someone had suggested I bring one) because it felt good on my stomach area. When my feet were cold at night I used my heating pad on my feet. Also when I was there with a friend for her surgery in April 2009 I found out at the nurse’s stations they also had heating pads—so if you don’t want to bring your own use their’s.

5. Some kind of slip on shoe for the plane ride home and something to wear in the hospital (I had some flip flops for the hospital and some clogs for the plane ride home. Flip flops didn't take up a lot of room in your suitcase. I also carried on the plane my tote bag carrying some things like, meds, change of underwear—in case my suitcase got lost, a snack so I could eat something after the tests that first day you arrive—because they will tell you not to eat a few hours before you get to Mexicali because of the tests you are going to be having upon arrival at the hospital in Mexicali. Sometimes you have to wait for everyone to have their test before they take you to the hotel and your are soooooooo hungry because you haven’t eaten anything all day long because most of us are flying into San Diego, so bring a snack that you can eat after your tests while waiting to go to the hotel. I brought along some packages of trail mix—bring what you like.

6. Only one (1) small or medium sized suitcase with wheels is really great because you will have to deal with your own suitcase at the airport (coming and going). I also brought along my laptop computer so I could stay in touch with my friends and family—I carried that on the plane too—don’t put it in a suitcase—too much stuff has been stolen out of suitcases.

7. Please be aware if you use your cell phone in Mexicali they will charge you roaming fees to CALL OUT. For me if people called me from the US to Mexicali and they were calling my Cell Phone there were NO ROAMING charges because they called me from the US. Most all cell phones work in Mexicali; I think they said Cricket was the only r that they had problems with. I didn't have anyone come with me for the surgery, and they were so nice as to call someone (in the US) for me after surgery and let them know that I was doing great.

I brought my own favorite small pillow with me (almost sofa size). It was nice to have it while I was in the hospital and on the plane ride home.

9. As far as money someone suggested I bring about $30.00 to $35.00 in one's so that I could have them for tipping—they all accept US money in Mexicali. I tipped Ernesto $20.00 who picks you up and takes you to the hospital, takes you to the hotel, takes you back the hospital for surgery and then back to the San Diego airport. Someone also suggested that Ernesto does massages and massage oil or cream would be a nice gift for him—I guess he doesn’t always have the cream or oils—I gave him some the last time I was there and he loved it. He takes such good care of everyone and I tipped him at the end when he took me back to the airport to go home. I also tipped the hotel guys for taking my bag to my room, and when I had dinner that night at the hotel. I would also bring along a small gift for 4 or 5 nurses or give them a little cash—I understand they really don’t make a lot of money and they might appreciate the cash as a gift. I would suggest that you take enough money or Credit Card or Debit card to purchase the medication that you will need after the surgery. There is a pharmacy about 1/2 block from the hotel--anyone at the hospital will tell you where it is. The Nexium that they suggest you take after surgery for acid reflux for about 3 months cost a lot less —don’t forget they will negotiate over the price of medication in Mexico –even when it is at a pharmacy-they will give a price and then ask them “if I buy 4 boxes will you sell it to me for—ask for a lower price. This medication costs a lot less in Mexicali than in the US—so don’t forget to buy it while you are there.

10. Do not take any jewelry with you or wear any. All I took was my watch. Leave ALL other jewelry at home.

11. Be prepared that Ernesto will be late picking you up--find a place to sit down in the baggage area where they said he would pick you up. Make sure you can see people walking in that area and he will come walking down through there with your name on a sign holding it up. He will have you back at the airport on your return trip home in plenty of time to catch your plane ride home.

12. Bring a camera along to take some pictures of yourself in the “before stage†and maybe a group picture of the other people who are going to have the surgery the same day you do. I have kept in contact with them. You will be so glad you have done this. Take lots of pictures. People really do enjoy seeing the pictures if they are considering doing this surgery.

13. Don’t forget the personal things like toothbrush, shampoo, soap that you may want to use in the shower, a razor, cream rinse for you hair—maybe a hair curler and hair dryer if you want. I don’t know if you want to bring make-up—I did, because I wanted to look ok going home on the plane. Yes, we used their water to take a shower—it is ok for showers… they do give you bottled water to drink.

14. I brought along a book I wanted to read along with my Ipod, so I could listen to my own music. You may or may not get a lot of reading done because you might want to take some nice naps too. Getting up and walking around is good for you and it makes you feel a lot better too.

15. Bring along some chap stick for your lips—they dry out and it is good to have something to put on your lips.

If anyone else can add anything please jump in here and help me out! I know you are worried about a few small things and I can tell you not to worry because we all have been where you are. Just keep posting to the web site-- anything you want to say or ask. We all understand and have been where you are right now. I wish you GREAT success and it will be a life changing event and in about 2 months you will be saying the same thing too.

Also adds that when they make you drink the vile stuff to make sure your new stomach has no leaks don’t for get to ask for chips of ice. It numbs your taste buds because they are so cold and you can drink their YUCK stuff. She did it and it worked great for her. I didn’t know about it and I wished I would have. I think they do this on the 3 day before you go home.

Suzanne

This is what someone else added to what I put on my list--you never can have too much help or information

I wore and underwire.....so I didn't get that message! I also brought a robe...for sure and maybe flip flops or slippers for doing lots of walking after the surgery. They give you those hospital gowns, but the day after the surgery, I was in my own pjs that were button down the front and elastic band capris...something easy to slip in and out of. Suzanne says-- I put my on PJ’s on after the surgery when I got up to go to the bathroom.

I would definitely take a comfy pillow for on the plane ride too. Just don't over pack! You will need very few things....one outfit for the day you arrive and one for when you leave and just the PJ’s for comfort.

You may need to have something on the plane ride....maybe some tea from Starbucks or get some hot water and add some chicken broth to the hot water--(take Chicken broth packets from Top Ramen Noodles works great for the Chicken broth. You most likely won't be hungry at all....but just in case......a clear broth with water works.

I realized that most of the stuff that I brought, I didn't even need.....so pack light! You will mostly be walking the halls of the hospital!

The best of luck to you! You will do great!
