Guest guest
Ohhhhhh, I think I can ease your mind about this issue. Dr. Aceves knows that blood clots are a risk to any surgery, ANY surgery. And we fatties have a little more risk than your average surgical patient. He orders a drug called Lovenox to be given the morning of surgery. It prevents blood clots. It's a tiny injection (similar to an insulin syringe) and the nurse will give it to you before surgery. It's an anticoagulant and the whole purpose of the drug is to prevent blood clots. Thing is, just being obese gives us risk to have blood clots without surgery. It's safer in the long run to lose the weight, there are fewer chances of this happening in the future. On 6/26/07, <kristen@...> wrote: It was my friend that died because of a blood clot. She was at her hotel after the surgery and her two daughters were with her and they were trying to get her to get up and walk around and they went to get her a drink of water and they came back and she had collapsed on the floor and was dead. It was said that it was because of a blood clot. This can happen with any surgery and is rare but sad. She was like all of us, very excited to have the surgery and sad that she could not live to see the weight come off. Her family just lost her sister last month, and are grieving so much because of it. PLEASE don't let this scare you, but I think all should be aware that there can be risks to the surgery…just talk to as many people as you can and get as much info as you can. If you do your reading, you will see a lot of postings that death is always possible with any surgery due to unforseen complications or problems. I am SCARED TO DEATH to have the surgery, but talking to others who are fine has calmed me down. If you are a person of faith, pray about it. I have been reading this board for well over a year and I guess that one somehow got lost or something because I don't recall that one at all. Gastric bypass maybe??? But I don't even think I've read that here. Everyone is scared...it IS surgery, afterall. However, my fear of dying from complications of being obese for so long began to become greater than my fear of having surgery so that was the point in time when I knew getting a lapband was right for me. I wanted to be around with my children until well into their adult hood and my fear of dying an early death was my motivation. I have had a few minor complications since my lapband but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. My life is so much better now and my health has improved drastically. I can't imagine what I would feel like at 43 years old and have all the excess weight on me that I used to carry now that I have become much smaller. I don't know how my body lasted as long as it did! Hell, if I had not had this surgery in 2006 when I weighed 247 pounds, I probably would be at least 300 pounds by now! Now THAT is what I call scary! Do your research. Keep reading messages on this board. Keep posting questions and concerns. Email people if you need to. Do whatever it takes to calm your nerves as much as possible. It is normal to be nervous...we ALL were...but don't go overboard or you will be miserable. Guest guest
Hi, I understand what your fear is, but you can also die from being obese, thats the way I seen it. Im 28 yrs old and I was weighing 212, I got banded June 07, 2007 and it has been the best experience ever. My fear was death cause i have my 2 lil boys and a husband and knowing I was going to Mexico for my surgery I was scared but excited. I was increasing my life insurance, the whole bit cause you never know what could happen, but Ive looked more into the lapband and the side affects werent has bad as the gastic bypass. So, I told myself and my husband Im going to do it because Im over weight and I dont want to live like this and if I dont I could get a chronic illness from being overweight. Just keep your head up and be strong and do it for yourself. Once, I got to the airport and they were picking us up, I met a few girls that were going to the same place for surgery and I felt so comfortable with them and we all supported eachother. Your experience will be well worth it!! Good Luck!! > > > > Hello Everyone, > > > > Well where to begin......I received my email today telling me I was > > approved for surgery. Guest guest
Keep in mind that people die of all kinds of things every day. Car accidents, acts of God, bank hold ups, etc. There is a chance that all of us could be caught up in something that will take our lives every day. You have to think that if you are doing something good for yourself, that a higher power wouldn't want to take your life. Obesity is a disease that kills many. Several people think that it is so easy to lose the weight yourself, but anyone on this board knows the truth. We have addictions to food for whatever reason and we cannot simply turn them off, which is why we have the surgery. I still miss KFC and Pizza Hut (trust me!) but I know that my body will reject those things. I make healthier choices because I have no choice now and I am a better, smaller, healthier person for it. This surgery will ensure that you are healthier as well. I was banded almost one year ago and am down to 230 pounds. I am 5'10" so I still have some weight to lose, but I can run now, and walk up stairs without passing out. I can go skydiving if I want to and fit on a ride at an amusement park. I no longer need a seat belt extender on the airplane. All these positive things. And, I know how to eat healthier so my children will be taught healthy habits. Now they won't be obese and go through what I had to. Even better, I buy clothing in the regular sizes, not plus sizes. All of these benefits that make my life happy. Honestly, with all of the turmoil in the world (we are at war, the natural disasters, basic car accidents), the risks of the surgery seem minute to me. Yes, there is a chance the worst will happen, but it is much more than a chance if you don't lose the weight and overcome your food addiction. I hope this helps. Good luck to you either way. I wish you all the best. Guest guest
PBing is a nice term for bandster's throwing up after eating! lol It stands for productive burping - PBing for short. This happens when you have eaten too fast, not chewed well enough, or you have eaten something that your band just refuses to tolerate even if you didn't eat too fast or you chewed enough. It isn't a gross as vomiting because there are no digestive juices mixed in, it is basically just chewed up food mixed with salavia that you have to get rid of. Every bandster experiences this at one time or another and some do it more than others. It is not good to do this continually because it could potentially cause your band to slip. HOwever, sometimes it is unavoidable. The longer you live with your band you learn to know how to avoid doing this (most of the time!). It really isn't a big deal! Guest guest
Besides the anticoagulant, our legs are also wrapped during and after surgery for awhile and we are encouraged to walk very soon after surgery in order to get the blood flowing and to prevent blood clots. I got blood clots after having my third child even though I had gained no weight during pregnancy and was up walking shortly after deliver1y--it just happens to some of us! And obviously I didn't die from it! I believe you will be in the best hands and also since we stay in a hospital for parts of 2 days after surgery they can stay on top of these kind of problems. Best wishes to you! Penny in Colorado > > > > Hello Everyone, > > > > Well where to begin......I received my email today telling me I was > > approved for surgery. Guest guest
Hi It sounds like you have made it to a better place, foodwise! The cream soups were my best friends and are still my comfort foods when I am feeling tight. I know they have more calories so I really try to stay away from them now that I am trying hard to get these last pounds off. I think you are also at a stage where you can drink smooothies. That may work real well in thiws warm weather! Just remember to go slowly and don't get too carried away with high cal foods. Soon you will be up to mushies and solids and you will hopefully be feeling more filled up. If not, when you hit 8 weeks be sure to get a fill! Jenni explains it well with her tire analogy. It is up to us to keep ahead on our fills. they are what makes the band work!! I am doing well. I am one that only weighs once a week so I am not sure if I am still losing or not. but I am going to stick with my determination to record what I eat on fitday.com and to exercise 5 days a week! Keep up the good work and keep us posted on how you are doing! Penny in Colorado PS: ie is doing really well, too. > > > > > > > > > > Hello Everyone, > > > > > > > > > > Well where to begin......I received my email today telling me > I > > > was > > > > > approved for surgery. Guest guest
, Don't be ashamed for gaining that weight. ALL of us on this board completely understand! I doubt there is one person on here who couldn't say...Been there, done that! As far as the pre-op diet, it wasn't difficult. You may want to do it just to be on the safe side. All you need to do is eat fewer carbs and kick up the protein a notch. I'm sure there will still be some meals or foods that you will want before your surgery because we all got that "Last Supper" syndrome...that is normal. Just minimize the carbs the rest of the time. You will do fine...try not to let fear take over. You are in for the most amazing, yet often frustrating, journeys of your lifetime. Enjoy every step of the journey towards the new you. Take care and keep posting and asking questions. July 14th is not too far away! You will absolutely love Dr. Aceves and the experience you will have there. Guest guest
It is amazing how hard it is to not drink while you are eating. That is just one of the habits you will soon be breaking. Guest guest
Drinking while eating is a learned behavior. We aren't born doing that. You just simply don't drink while you eat. It takes getting used to but it really isn't a big deal. 252/172/150 Banded 12/06 On 6/30/07, mrsdash1966 <kristen@...> wrote: I dont know how you can eat and not have something to drink??? Guest guest
You need to start practicing before surgery. It definately is a learned behavior and can be un-learned. If you drink while eating you will simply wash yur food through the pouch...defeating the purpose of the pouch.mrsdash1966 <kristen@...> wrote: I dont know how you can eat and not have something to drink??? I have found when you do drink Crystal Light is great! Hey, if I can give up beer others should be able to give up soda. Guest guest
//I dont know how you can eat and not have something to drink??? Noteven water? How in the world am I going to be able to do that?// It's a matter of deciding that is what you are going to do. Each of us can do what we want with this tool we have. We can get the band, cheat it, keep the weight on and complain to the world that EVEN the BAND didn't work for me. OOORRRR we can follow the bandster rules, lose weight and tell the world "life is grand with the band" it is a choice you have to make. Is it easy, No. Can you do it, Yes. I'm not perfect, I don't follow all the rules to a 'T but I try my hardest and not drinking with a meal is one of the easiest rules of the them all. Just don't do it. Put away the glass when you sit down to dinner. If I'm in a restaurant I order lemon water right away, I drink the whole thing or as much of it as I can, then when my food comes, I ask them to take my water, they ALWAYS look at me funny, but I have NEVER explained why I want it gone, just do it. No glass, no drink, that simple. When I first started this journey I did exactly what you are doing, asked the group how in the world I'm supposed to do this, I gave good excuses, like I like spicy food, what then. Guess what, no one had sympathy for me, they said "follow the rules and succeed or don't and you won't succeed". For a while I got hung up on candy and ice cream that goes down easy. I called Nina and she gave it to me hard. She then emailed and really let me have it. Like she said, there is no excuse. You can't spend $8000+ just to blow it on something stupid like ice cream. Now do I still eat ice cream, yes, just not everyday like I was I hope this helped and didn't come off too harsh. We are all here to support each other so please keep asking questions and we will keep supporting and answering them Take Care, Cyrena Weeks www.mylapbandjourney.com (240) 230/177/150 DOB: 1/19/
Guest guest
Not drinking with meals will be one of the easiest rules to follow. But that is all it is...a rule to follow. Will it hurt you to drink with your meals? No. Will it damage your pouch? No. Will it make a difference? YES. Many people who don't lose much weight with their lapbands and want to question why the band isn't working are the very ones who don't quit drinking with their meals. It is a behavior modification that you should be willing to do if you are willing to pay this much money out of pocket for surgery. Before banding, I drank 2 or 3 glasses of sweet tea (yes, I'm a southerner!) with each meal. It really hasn't been difficult to give it up...it is more of a habit than anything. Guest guest
Hello Posey Family Please know that fear is a very valid feeling. It is only natural to want to grab your son and RUN. My daughter was diagnosed back in February but as a mum i just KNEW something was wrong with her the year before and i started attending doctors. To counter your fear educate yourself. Just because one child is sick doesnt mean that all children are, there are ups and downs with JIA as there are with life. We all go from happy to sad to distraught to smiling about what we are seeing and how our kids amaze us. If i could reach out and hug you just now i would. We have all been where you are, i didtn get out of bed for 3 days last week as i was just so down and depressed. So i understand how you are feeling. We all deal with stress and despair in very different ways. We are all human and entitled to cry. Some of us eat junk food to comfort us, turn to God, surround ourselves with friends and family, ask questions in the forum or just throw pillows around when the kids are unwell. I try not to show my fear when is in pain or sporting a nice new swelling, i save up all my fears for when she is in bed and end up on my soapbox in here. How strong we appear to be in front of our children is important. If they see us in fear it increases their fear! i am not sayin it is wrong to cry with your child but i do try my best to only let her see glimpses of my pain so she knows that i am as upset as she is at the changes in her body BUT that this is the way God made her and we dont question what his plans are for her. She thinks he wants her to have this so that she can help other children when she is grown up. She has found different ways of doing things that amaze me and make her doctors grin. As each form of arthritis is different it is best to throw questions at some of the mums whos child has the form or arthritis your child has. It never fails to amaze me the different forms or arthritis and how each one affects our children differently. Your child is a rainbow. Arthritis is only one small colour that makes up you little rainbow. There is a whole person beyond his illness. and no doubt a pot of gold at the end of it As says her arthritis isnt WHo she is its what she has!
