Although the Ultrasound Doppler is a great indication for the majority

of people for stenoses this is not the case for all. For example any

blockages in the Azygos vein are not shown using a Doppler (these types

of blockages can only be seen during the procedure itself). Dr Simka

said between 5- 10% of people they had treated had blockages in the

Azygos (I think I read somewhere that people with PPMS are likely to

have a blockage in the Azygos or was it SPMS - not sure!).

Also at the same time my wife had her procedure 3 weeks ago, Dr Simka

checked another lady using the Doppler and he could not find any

blockages however his experience taught him otherwise and he suggested

they operate and see if the Venography showed anything different - it

did, and occulsions were found very high up virtually behind the ears on

both sides.

Extremely proficient Doppler operatives are required to carry out the

scanning - and I think the ones in Glasgow have been trained by

Zamboni's team.
