Guest guest
Leanne, a few of us have tried to kick the Prednisone habit with no success. I've been taking 10 mg per day for years and can't get lower for any length of time. I always end up back on 5 mg morning and 5 mg evening. For me it's a blessing and a fault. Tender, fragile skin is one of the problems I'm having a hard time with, especially when I play with the dogs. After the playing or other projects, we have to look me over to make sure I'm not bleeding. I don't really think Prednisone is totally at fault, but it does play it's part. It sounds like you do need to go back up. It's not a good drug sometimes but you won't have a good quality life. That's what is important! Guest guest
Talk to your Doctor. I felt much better on prednisone. However I was down to 2.5 a day with Celebrex and lost more than a quart of blood bleeding internally. I truly miss taking it .....but I am alive. Good luck.... Guest guest
i too am weaning off prednisone. i am down to 5mg from 10. i've been on it less then a year. i went to a naturopath and he gave me some adrenal support to take. i don't know if it helps, im not faithful in taking it. i am in an awful flare but i've been this way since i quit the methotrexate. i had a really bad cough and was having trouble breathing, i ended up in emergency a couple of times. this went on for over 2 months. it started clearing up when i quit the methotrexate. i am determined to get off the prednisone, i hope you are sucessful. Guest guest
When I've dropped down in the past, I sometimes have pain but then it will either subside or stay the same. I've successfully come off of it in the past and am on my way back down for a second time. Give it a couple of days and then see where your at. You may need to drop down even slower. Instead of going down by 1mg increments, maybe you need to alternate 5mg with 4mg for a few weeks before going to 4mg. I had a harder time doing bigger " step " drops and this worked well for me. Guest guest
Leanne, Try sticking it out for a little while if you can. For me going from 7mg to 6mg took a couple of months to finally stabilize. I'm now down to 1mg but it has taken me a long time to get here. The first week after decreasing was the worst then it seemed to get back to normal (or normal for me). It has been worth the effort to get off of it. Guest guest
KD, Sometimes large doses of prednisone are given at disease onset or for flares. Depending on the dose and the number of days you are on it, sometimes weaning is not necessary - e.g., if you take 40 mg of prednisone for three days, there wouldn't be weaning involved. Weaning is necessary when you've taken prednisone to the point where your adrenal glands stop functioning at normal capacity. You wean to slowly let the adrenal glands " wake up. " If you stop cold turkey, your adrenal glands may not be functioning well and you could be in very big trouble, possibly die. Be sure to discuss this issue with your physician. Guest guest
Weaning Off the Prednisone. Of it does take time for your body to adjust. If you packed on any weight that too will start coming off. I lost 30 pounds in a matter of two months. I was on the Pred for over 7 years, when I was 48, I started having problems with my heart racing, especially when I was working out. I was getting dizzy and thought my Blood pressure was out of wack. So I went to a cardiologist. Did the stress test, and echo. Needless to say my adrenaline system is out of wack, a side effect from long term prednisone. Now I have to take medication a Beta Blocker for my heart daily. I will probably never come off it. As far as the prednisone, that was the first thing the cardio Dr. told me to do was get off it. It took me 5 months to wean myself off it completely. And I went throught the awful feelings of being aching all the time. So I started to exercise more, eat well and it has made a world of difference. Just because you hurt don't stop the movement, being active is better for your RA then anything. Good luck on weaning. Don't risk the side effects of the Prednisone and end up with the health problems that relate to your heart, it sucks.
