Guest guest
- Saw your post. Will get an answer to you soon. Resident of Lubbock Tx. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: " Mailman " <ladydiana@...> " listservice " <dwarfismegroups> Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2000 06:49:32 -0500 Subject: Transportation Hi Everyone, I am from District 6. I am a lurker, but every once in a while I have a question for the Listservice. However this question is really for people who only live in Lubbock, Texas. You see, I am going to Lubbock for my nephew's wedding at the end of October. I want to bring my scooter, so I can get around without being dependent on anyone. However, my older brother, who is planning to drive my mother and me around, doesn't want me to bring it, because it is heavy, and according to him wouldn't be able to fit in any trunk, even taking it apart. My question is is there any public or private transportation that has a van with a lift that I would be able to use, so I wouldn't be dependent on my brother. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Guest guest
You would have to check with your deparment of special education at the state level, but here in RI (a small state), children cannot be riding on a bus for more than 1 hour. Guest guest
I would contact these people first before contacting your lawyer: Ohio Legal Rights Sevice (OLRS) By phone: The OLRS Intake department is available by phone weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The voice numbers are 614-466-7264 or 1-800-282-9181 (toll-free in Ohio only) and the TTY numbers are 614-728-2553 or 1-800-858-3542 (toll-free in Ohio only). Guest guest
I wanted to give you all an update with what information I have found. I spent much time yesterday on the phone and searching the internet. Didn't really get what I had hoped for but at least I got to talk to someone. I did contact the Ohio Coalition for Exceptional Children. Their response was that usually the discussion has been that a child with special needs should not be on a bus longer than a " typical " child would be. So, if the longest bus route is an hour and a half, then the special needs child should not be on longer. She suggested that I contact the Ohio Dept. of Ed. I did contact them and even got a person, not a machine asking me to leave a message! There is NO rule regarding length of transportation. I asked " Can the district keep my child on a bus for over 2hrs? " His reply was that there was no rule on how long transportation is. So yes! This is SO frustrating. For my child who has documented sensory issues and has difficulty with transition issues. If we allow this crazy situation, Lucas will be expected to get up very early to probably be picked up around 6am. Endure a LONG ride, transition into school, make it through the day, then have another long ride home. After all this we are expecting him to participate in social events of his choosing which are SO important to him but get enough sleep to start this whole process again. I will now be contacting our attorney to see what are plan will be. I just know that Lucas is the one that keeps losing out because our school district only sees him as a child with behavioral issues so we needed to have him attend school elsewhere. Sorry for the long post. Thanks. Pam > > > > What part of Ohio do you live in? I am in Hamilton. Guest guest
I think Ohio thinks one hour is the longest. Call the department of education and ask them. I think that is way too long a bus ride! Roxanna ( ) transportation Hi! Does anyone know how long a child can be in transit to a school? My son is in an out of district placement. Last year many days it took up to 2.5 hours or more to get to school. I ended up driving him in the morning and then he rode the van home at the end of the day. I am unable to drive him this year. We are in Ohio. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Pam ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No virus found in this incoming message.
