Guest guest
Hi Norma and welcome to the group! I don't play golf, but have experienced pain in my hands when I've had to grip things for an extended period of time (ie, pen, grocery cart bar, kitchen knife, fork). I would recommend you talk to your Rheumy and let him/her know of the pain you're experiencing when playing golf. Perhaps they could shed some light on whether this is something to work through, alternatives to make it more comfortable or perhaps stop doing altogether. I pray its not the latter as it seems you are really enjoying this game. Best of luck to you. Keep us posted. We care.....Doreen I have found my hands hurting in the last month. So new to all of this. I feel like I have little sprains in my hands. I went to hit balls Thursday and afterwards I felt a couple of fingers really spained feeling. It hurt. Now I have a practice with some women tomorrow to hit balls and my first company golf game Thursday for three hours. I have not told them of my condition. I am not sure if doing this will injure my hand. Can any one give me some advice? I want to play. I just started with golf lessons then the stiffness in my hands started a month ago or so. Do any of you play golf still and suffer the consequences because of the quality of life? Thank you so much. Norma from Texas.
Guest guest
Wow! That is such an accurate description of my own symptoms in my hands and wrists. I was diagnosed last year and have been receiving treatment for 9 to 10 months. Unfortunately, you are going to have to make choices and keep experimenting with what you can and cannot do. More unfortunately, it most likely going to be pain that guides you. In my case I like to draw and sketch, I prefer to use whatever I have towards those things, you may have to make the same choices. Whatever consequences you suffer will primarily based on your condition and how well you react to the medications. For the moment, from what you are saying and based on my own experience these things will aggravate your joints and therefore result in pain. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm saying be prepared for taking the night off to deal with it. For me, warm water, a heating pad and Tylenol Arthritis made things easier. Tylenol Arthritis is very effective and I still use it when I have a light to moderate flares. This is going to be a giant experiment for you and you'll have to keep testing yourself to learn not to over do it. Hope this helps. Stan Seattle, Clouds. Guest guest
Stan, you say this is how your RA started? May I ask how agressive your RA got after the hands? Right now I can type and work, but in the morning they are stiff and sprainy feeling and the major part goes away but is still there all day. I have no major pain, but I can take pain well. Where else in your body did the RA attack and what has it kept you from? I am asking all these questions because I have my apartment comig up for renewal and not sure what I need to do. I want to be independent and keep working. But the unknown is totally overwhelming. Just to hear how others progressed may give me an idea. Is your medication helping your RA from progressing very dramatically? Gee, I am sure you have been in my position where you are totally lost and all I have to talk to is you guys! Stan, thanks for the info on Tylenol Arthritis...will get some today. I am taking Celebrex twice a day now for a previous injury and thankful I have it until I see the doc. Thanks, Norma from Texas
Guest guest
Hi Norma! All my 'stuff' started with a sore finger and then became all my fingers and wrists. At the time, I was (and still am a stay at home mom) and was taking in sewing and alterations to help earn some money. I noticed when I did a bit of hand sewing, that I was useless for a couple of days after. I would wrap my hands in a heating pad and just cry. I finally learned to 'plan out' my time and use of my hands. A lot of hand work means that I havd baseball mit like hands, hurts!, and very little grip and am knocking over everything. I try to avoid the hand sewing and use a machine as much as possible. If I garden a day, then I will not plan to hand sew or garden the next day, etc. It's all about trade offs. Fioricet is my pain med of choice. We all figure out ways to deal and get around all of this insanity! Hang in there!!!! D. in south Louisiana > > Hi Norma and welcome to the group! Guest guest
Oooo - I hear you on that one, Stan! And it totally stinks trying to sleep - hurts on either side and flat on my back hurts my lower back, with a pillow under my legs hurts my legs - can't do the stomach with this knotted up hernia. I'm seriously considering an adjustable bed!.....Doreen Multiple flares in both shoulders are the worst, makes me feel like a bag of potatoes.
