Hey

Can't say that I've fallen recently but I certainly have a fear

of falling that's gotten so much worse this past year as my

feet, hips, knees, etc. have been giving me grief.

> A month ago I fell at my parents' house on smooth side

That makes me wonder, though, about all the falls I took as

a teen when playing basketball. It was such a puzzle to me

that I asked the coach about it who replied, " All I can see

is you falling over your own feet. " Of course, that was back

in " the old days " before anyone knew anything about P or

PA. :D Reckon it began all that long ago? ????

I've had the same problem. Before all this started, I was always really

strong, able to lift a lot for a female my size and into running...but since

the PA has come on, I've taken a few falls too...

I've had bad knees from running cross country, gymnastics and

cheerleading, but they've gotten considerably worse with the PA. Muscle

weakness also seems to be a big factor...just suddenly...I lose all the

muscle strength and fall.

At first it just happened trying to get out of bed in the morning-one 3 or

4 occassions, so I gave myself more time to get ready before trying to stand

up...but then it started happening during the day in public...not even at

times I was feeling really swollen and achy..

In one of my flares two years ago, I fell twice in a month.

And no, not careless tripping,either... my legs just gave out and I fell.

Once while crossing the street, and was almost hit by a car as a result...

When the posts came up about muscle weakness a few weeks back, I was

thinking about my falls and wondering if this is all tied in with the

PA...maybe it is...

Usually it seems to happen after I've been sitting for a while-in bed or

in the car...but a few times it was completely random...

I've told my doctors about it, but they didn't know what to say or

do...they'll just say something about getting more rest or something, but

they hadn't heard of this kind of problem before...

Anyone else had this problem??

Hi All, yes I have had experience with the falls. Very scared of falling and breaking another bone. I fell within about a year before being diagnosed with PA, broke my right ankle and had a spiral fracture from there half way up to my knee. All I did was step on an unlevel area in the grass, it wasn't an actual hole in the ground. My right ankle and leg still have some weakness at times. I also experience feeling like I have jello legs. They just get weak feeling at times and feel like both are going out from under me when I take a step. I have not been able to associate it to any particular thing such as when just getting up from sitting or being on my feet too long. I do have to stand in place alot to get my balance and make my legs go. I fell just before the initial flare of PA was diagnosed and I think that really set this whole problem into high gear. I fell again during that flare and had a terrible time getting up out of the floor. I was real weak at the time from the flare and the side effects of the Prednisone. During that fall I just layed in the floor and cried like a baby. I had been trying to get around holding on to the wall or whatever was near me, got tired and sat in a rolling chair that I had put in the kitchen so I could fix something to eat and not have to stand constantly. I dropped something and stupidly bent over while in the chair, it rolled out from under me, then it flipped over on top of me and had me wedged in the doorway. I was quite difficult to get the chair off then pull myself up. I stopped using the chair to scoot around in after that and used a walker. The comments and looks I got about the walker at my age were very embarrassing, so then I tried to use a cane, no difference was shown by what people would say about using either one. I don't know who was more ashamed me or my family. Now I don't really care who is ashamed or embarassed just as long as I can get to and from where I want to go, but still hope I never have to use these things again. It just makes me feel like an OLD LADY and I am only 40 years old now. The chair might not have been so hard to get off if it didn't have arms on it. Cassie

I too have fallen quite alot before diagnosed with PA...I was always athletic until these last few years. I played basketball, softball...girls league, bowled, skated etc. I always had trouble with my knees slipping out of place if I turned them wrong. My p didn't show up till 76 so I jus tthought it was something I had to put up with. In my middle 20's-40's I feel a lot...tripped on the air it seemed like. So we may be on something here. Donna

I seem to fall every month or so. But, it happens so fast I don't know what part of my body is failing me. I'm sure most of you remember my last fall in Ireland. When I went to my Rheumatologist last week, they x-rayed my knee and determined that I sort of broke it. It has something broken in it and floating around. It gets to stay there. Becky

Hi Cassie: Falling is something that I worry about alot too. I have had a

couple of falls over the years, but none since being diagnosed. My Ortho

doctor told me to get REEBOX DMX tennis shoes, which I have done. They are

wonderful. They give me the ankle support that I need since my ankles are

really bad right now. I have not gotten up the never to wear them with

business suits yet, but with winter coming...I may just have to quit being so

vain. My company certain understands...it's just me! I also have to stand

for a minute or so (30 seconds) before taking that " first step " .. to get

balance, to assess where the worse pain is going to be when I take the step,

etc. HOWEVER, I learned yesterday that I CAN move fast if I really have

motivation - lying on our bed taking my after-work break & trying to call my

son - I look up and there is a HUGH black spider on my chandelier....I

SPRINTED out of that bedroom until my husband got rid of the monstrosity. I

have a spider fobia that EVEN PA cannot defeat! Alan got quite a laugh out

of it and of course is now saying...you can move if you WANT to...LOL...I did

point out to him that I nearly fell THREE times during that SPRINT! Oh

well...if we don't find the humor in all this...where would we be?? Take

care...oh and I have broken down and used a cane for long distances...that

was a hard decision & I made him carry it out of Meijer when we bought it:)

But it has been useful...especially with our son's college football games

starting up now:)

I have also started wearing the Reebok DMX. This is ALL I wear. Luckily I am

able to wear jeans to work so I do not need to worry about the look. And I

would. I have a big problem with inflammation on the ball of my feet. If any

of you have this problem DMX puts out some tennis shoes that actually have an

air pocket in that area that extrudes a bit from the bottom of the shoe so

you actually roll a little. I swear by these.

I too have the spider phobia...I'd probably kill myself just trying to get away from it and then the spider would have the last laugh.

With my feet an ankles like they are now...it would be a struggle to get away from it, but get I would...Donna

I've only had one fall. It was about four years ago

and I was in the Subway. I just turned around and

suddenly I was on my butt. Very embarrassing. It was

during a time when the PA was much worse than it is

now.

I'm so sorry to hear about other members falls. I too have fallen; 5-6 times in

the past 6 months. I've broken three ribs and my foot, which has further

limited my mobility. I attribute it to medications. I'm taking so many

including Norco, and I think the combinations make me unsteady. I just have had

to slow down and make sure I use hand holds wherever possible, and make sure I

know where I am putting my feet.

So sorry to hear of all the falls on this group. Wasthinking about it this

morning and want to share this with you. I have a friend that had fallen 6

different times. Her son purchased a power balance bracelet for her and no more

falls. I found them at a gas station convience store for $10.00. My husdand is

wearing one and I gave the one I got for myself to my sister-in-law who had fell

a couple of times.

You can search power balance online and find them for $29.00.

Hope this helps someone.

I think my brother-in-law got one, because he is having some balance

problems. But I've read that they are a scam.
