Gretchen,

I wear AFOs because of foot drop & for lateral stability. Mine were

molded for me about 25 years ago. The part that goes up the back of

the leg curves around the leg a little for strength because I have no

muscle below the knee. The foot part cups the heel, ends at the ball

and curves up on both sides holding my foot snugly in place so I

don't

break down my shoes on the outsides. These require a wide width &

½

size larger shoe.

Some people with foot drop don't need lateral support & therefore

don't need the material around the ankle. Others don't have severe

foot drop & can use a narrower piece up the back of the leg.

To save money some are buying 'off the shelf' without understanding

the reasons behind the designs.

The only adjustment I needed was in the angle of the upright part. I

don't even pad mine, just wear knee socks.
