All the diabetes doctors and specialist we have seen have said that aspartame is safe. Most people don't know that it is made from grapefruit skins. It may bother some people (headaches etc..) but so do all foods. M. <<oh yes, aspartame is very dangerous...let me find my articles. Liam's occupational therapist is on a campaign against it. One of her other patients, a 5 year old child, was found in his bed in a coma. He was rushed to the hospital and stayed in the coma for 2 days. The only reason the doctor's could come up with was that he was put in a diabetic coma because he drank 3 -4 cans of Diet Coke a day (his mother's -- there was no reason he needed it). They feel it fooled his little body into thinking it had enough sugar when it didn't. People dealing with diabetes every day probably understand this better than I do. I'm sure it's safe for diabetics because they strictly monitor blood sugar levels during the day. My response to the OT was that little kids should not be drinking that much of any soda a day. I've read that the high amount of phosphorous in soda upsets the ratio of calcium and phophorous in developing bones which weakens bones. After hearing the story of the little boy, I've been avoiding sodas containing aspartane and drinking more water instead. Yes, The child was probably drinking a huge amount of fluid the days before going keto, but the fluid didn't cause the diabetes, the child was trying to compensate for the massive sugar level in the body due to lack of insulin. This very thing happened to my daughter, she didn't wake up one morning after having what we thought was " the flu' and was in ketoacidosis.. the day before she later told me she had drank a gallon of orange " drink " in the course of a couple of hours, as well as 6 cans of pop in 2 hours...and she was still desparately thirsty.. She was in a coma for 2 days, and we are lucky she is alive. I agree with those who say " everything in moderation " :-) m.

Guest guest
We sometimes use diet pop and sometimes regular, but not in amounts like that. usually has one can a day, occasionally 2 and I drink only one or 2 a week. I don't think anyone should be drinking large amounts of either kind. can't drink Coke or Dr. Pepper, there is something in there that makes his stomach hurt. He can drink it occasionally, he loves Dr. P. but not regularly. I don't know what it is, not caffeine, he has caffeine in other things, everyone assumes that's what it is. But I know it's not that. Whatever it is he just doesn't drink it. Jessie

I'd much rather buy a lemonaide than a can of coke. Water is even better, but I have a hard time spending the same amount on a bottle of water as I do a bottle of coke. Luckily, prefers milk and juice over any type of sodas. I know there is an urban legend about aspartame...but what I once read in Readers Digest is that some of these sweetners may act as an appetite stimulant in some people. Guest guest
I typed in aspartame in Google and the first site listed was from a study done at Notre Dame Univ. There may be some urban legends out there too but also real studies are being done with negative results I remember reading it causes symptoms similar to MS. Memory loss among other things Di, mom to Jake(18,nda) and 4 (DS) Pennsylvania

Guest guest
Ouch! I think 's intentions were good and she only wanted to point out what is fact. The problem with the internet at times is that we miss out on the emotional content on what we write. Professionals aren't all knowing and can get things mixed up just like the rest of us. Is aspartame controversial? I don't really know. I know there are urban legends surrounding it's dangers and Di just posted something about a study from Notre Dame regarding it's negative side effects. I haven't read that study, so I am not going to comment on that one. Anyway, I had to laugh today. and I went to the grocery store and stopped in the soda isle. Guest guest
and of course there are those of us who only drink soda or water. I don't drink tea or coffee - only diet coke or water - -flavoured or natural. To my knowledge I haven't done any damage to myself from drinking diet drinks - and I've been drinking them for a lot of years now. Guest guest
I notice the majority of the conversation is about this subject right now.. I have to say, that I try my hardest to never have aspartame in my life.. I once gave 2 of kids diet yogurt and they broke out in these red dots all over!! took them to emergency and it was said to be a reaction to the aspartame in the diet yogurt. I will always take regular soda over diet and have learned that there are some negative sides to aspartame.. although there are negative sides to many things.. but it's just a personal choice.
